Investigation of Sub‐Bandgap Emission and Unexpected n‐Type Behavior in Undoped Polycrystalline CdSe x Te 1‐x

Abstract Se alloying has enabled significantly higher carrier lifetimes and photocurrents in CdTe solar cells, but these benefits can be highly dependent on CdSe x Te 1‐x processing. This work evaluates the optoelectronic, chemical, and electronic properties of thick (3 µm) undoped CdSe x Te 1‐x of uniform composition and varied processing conditions (CdSe x Te 1‐x evaporation rate, CdCl 2 anneal, Se content) chosen to reflect various standard device processing conditions. Sub‐bandgap defect emission is observed, which increased as Se content increased and with “GrV‐optimized CdCl 2 ” (i.e., CdCl 2 anneal conditions used for group‐V‐doped devices). Low carrier lifetime is found for GrV‐optimized CdCl 2 , slow CdSe x Te 1‐x deposition, and low‐Se films. Interestingly, all films (including CdTe control) exhibited n‐type behavior, where electron density increased with Se up to an estimated ≈10 17 cm −3 . This behavior appears to originate during the CdCl 2 anneal, possibly from Se diffusion leading to anion vacancy (e.g., V Se , V Te ) and Cl Te generation.

Manufacturing Cost Analysis of Advanced Parabolic Trough Collector

The research team performed a detailed bottom-up manufacturing cost estimate for an advanced parabolic trough design - the Solar Dynamics Sunbeam-MT (Sunbeam Mid-Term). This includes all components for manufacturing and assembly in a manufacturing facility (e.g. space frame and arms), and the purchased parts (e.g. mirrors and receiver tubes). Estimates of the construction and assembly activities have been made to then determine an estimated installed cost. Prior analysis has already undertaken detailed bottom-up manufacturing, assembly, and construction analysis for the Ultimate Trough from schlaich bergermann partner (sbp), and this work updates the solar field cost estimates based on a similar aperture area as the SunBeam-MT. For this analysis, the Ultimate Trough is considered the commercial parabolic trough and the Sunbeam-MT as the advanced parabolic trough. For similarity, both the Sunbeam-MT and the Ultimate Trough have been modelled with a solar field with approximately 800,000 square meters (m2) in aperture area - the equivalent of a large CSP plant. The analysis has found a potential installed cost estimate of the Sunbeam-MT could be $120/m2 but must be built at scale to confirm this estimate. Compared to prior analysis, the commercial Ultimate Trough using U.S. conditions, has reduced in installed cost from $178/m2 to $152/m2. Both designs could be even cheaper with Chinese steel.

Cost Update: Commercial and Advanced Heliostat Collectors

The research team performed a detailed bottom-up manufacturing cost estimate for 2 heliostat designs: i) a commercially available design, the Stellio; and ii) an advanced heliostat design, the Drop-C. The Drop-C is designed and developed by Solar Dynamics (SD) of the United States, whilst the Stellio has been developed primarily by Schlaich Bergermann Und Partner, Sonne Gmbh (sbp) of Germany. The Stellio heliostat has been deployed at commercial scale and is being used at the Hami CSP 50-megawatt electric (MW e ) power tower plant in China. For each design, this includes all components for manufacturing and assembly in a manufacturing facility (e.g., struts and frame) using Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA), and the purchased parts (e.g., mirrors, control systems, and drives). The field-assembly and construction activities are also considered to determine the installed cost of the modelled solar fields.

Potential-induced degradation of Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 can occur by shunting the front i-ZnO and by damaging the p-n junction

In this work we test field-relevant potential-induced degradation (PID) behavior by encapsulating laboratory Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) solar cells and applying +1000 V uniformly on the face of the front glass. In this configuration, we find that K-rich borosilicate glass reduces the extent of PID relative to Na-rich soda-lime glass. We also find that the standard testing protocol of stressing cells at short-circuit leads to faster PID than stressing cells at open-circuit. We characterize two types of CIGS PID: The first, front shunting PID, is driven by front-glass stress and occurs when alkali metal cations accumulate in the i-ZnO buffer, where they increase shunt conductance to reduce fill factor. The second, p-n junction PID, results from back-glass stress as alkali metal cations pile up near the CIGS surface/CdS buffer, where they reduce charge carrier concentration, open-circuit voltage, and fill factor to degrade efficiency ~160 times faster than front shunting PID.

Cell-level reliability testing procedures for CIGS photovoltaics

The reliability of photovoltaics is commonly studied at the module level. Many reliability problems originate from module attributes, such as metal interconnections to cells, junction boxes. However, significant work in reliability can also be done prior to module design. Testing for reliability earlier in the research cycle increases the probability of avoiding common module reliability problems before cell changes are implemented on a large scale. Cell-level reliability studies can thus lower the rates of module failures in the field and provide confidence to investors that new technologies will perform as advertised. This report summarizes how we investigated three reliability concerns in Cu(In,Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) photovoltaics at the cell level: metastability, shading-induced damage, and potential-induced degradation (PID). We find that examining these concerns required developing robust measurement protocols including the fabrication of novel testing structures. This information will allow readers to incorporate sound metrics for investigating reliability phenomena and aid their studies of cell and module reliability improvements.
