General aviation aircraft antennas for the global positioning system

Several antenna designs that utilize the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System in a low-cost system for general aviation aircraft were evaluated. Experimental investigations were made of crossed-dipoles, various types of crossed-slots, and microstrip antennas with modifications to improve their coverage. Principal plane radiation patterns for several of these antennas were measured on a one-seventh scale model of a Gates Lear Jet.

MLS antenna locations for the deHaviland DASH 7 aircraft

Several proposed aircraft antenna locations were investigated to determine their potential for satisfying the microwave landing system antenna coverage requirements. The results of this investigation are presented and antenna locations are recommended for the deHavilland DASH 7 aircraft.

Airborne antenna pattern calculations

A procedure for numerically calculating radiation patterns of fuselage-mounted airborne antennas using the Volumetric Pattern Analysis Program is presented. Special attention is given to aircraft modeling. An actual case study involving a large commercial aircraft is included to illustrate the analysis procedure.

Volumetric pattern analysis of airborne antennas

By blending together the roll and elevation plane high-frequency solutions, a very efficient technique has been developed for the volumetric pattern analysis of antennas mounted on the fuselage of a generalized aircraft. The fuselage is simulated by an infinitely long, perfectly conducting, elliptic cylinder in cross section and a composite elliptic cylinder in profile. The wings, nose section, stabilizers, and landing-gear doors may be modeled by finite flat or bent plates. Good agreement with accurate scale model measurements has been obtained for a variety of airborne antenna problems.

The design, development, and flight test results of the Boeing 737 aircraft antennas for the ICAO demonstration of the TRSB microwave landing system

The Research Support Flight System, a modified Boeing 737, was used to evaluate the performance of several aircraft antennas and locations for the Time Reference Scanning Beam (TRSB) Microwave Landing System (MLS). These tests were conducted at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center (NAFEC), Atlantic City, New Jersey on December 18, 1975. The flight tests measured the signal strength and all pertinent MLS data during a straight-in approach, a racetrack approach, and ICAO approach profiles using the independent antenna-receiver combinations simultaneously on the aircraft. Signal drop-outs were experienced during the various approaches but only a small percentage could be attributed to antenna pattern effects.

Airborne antenna polarization study for the microwave landing system

The feasibility of the microwave landing system (MLS) airborne antenna pattern coverage requirements are investigated for a large commercial aircraft using a single omnidirectional antenna. Omnidirectional antennas having vertical and horizontal polarizations were evaluated at several different station locations on a one-eleventh scale model Boeing 737 aircraft. The results obtained during this experimental program are presented which include principal plane antenna patterns and complete volumetric coverage plots.

A study of KC-135 aircraft antenna patterns

Numerical solutions for the radiation patterns of aircraft antennas provide and excellent means of designing and locating antennas in order to achieve the desired performance. The high frequency solutions presented in this paper are based on fuselage antennas mounted on a general-type aircraft but applied specifically to the KC-135 aircraft. The roll and elevation plane patterns are computed for a monopole, axial slot, and circumferential slot mounted both over and forward of the wings. In each case the calculated patterns compare very favorably with the measured patterns. The precision pattern measurements were taken on a 1/25 scale model of the KC-135 aircraft at NASA (Hampton, Va.) with special emphasis on reducing the mount and background effects.

Flush-mounted dielectric-loaded axial slot on circular cylinder

An investigation is conducted of electric field patterns of a TE axial slot antenna which radiates through a dielectric window in a circular cylinder. The cylinder is partially coated with a dielectric layer. The investigation is to provide information regarding the effects of a high-temperature dielectric layer on the performance of antennas mounted on a space shuttle. Numerical results are presented for the far-field patterns. It is pointed out that the calculations show excellent agreement with experimental measurements.

Sinusoidal reaction formulation for radiation and scattering from conducting surfaces

A piecewise-sinusoidal reaction technique is proposed for the study of scattering and radiation from perfectly conducting bodies of arbitrary shape. The reaction technique described is a moment method based on the integral equation of an electric field. A theory of sinusoidal reaction formulation for radiation and scattering problems is outlined, in which the scattered field is obtained by integrating the surface currents. Numerical results are presented for the scattering patterns of rectangular plates and corner reflectors and the radiation patterns of corner-reflector antennas.
