First Images from HERO: A Hard-X-Ray Focusing Telescope

We are developing a balloon-borne hard-x-ray telescope that utilizes grazing incidence optics. Termed HERO, for High-Energy Replicated Optics, the instrument will provide unprecented sensitivity in the hard-x-ray region and will achieve milliCrab-level sensitivity in a typical 3-hour balloon-flight observation and 50 microCrab sensitivity on ultra-long-duration flights. A recent proof-of-concept flight, featuring a small number of mirror shells captured the first focused hard-x-ray images of galactic x-ray sources. Full details of the payload, its expected future performance and its recent measurements are provided.

ROSAT/Chandra Observations of a Bright Transient in M81

We present a 10-year X-ray light curve and the spectra of a peculiar X-ray transient in the spiral galaxy M81. The source was below the detection limit of ROSAT PSPC before 1993, but it brightened substantially in 1993, with luminosities exceeding the Eddington limit of a 1.5 solar mass compact accretor. It then faded and was not firmly detected in the ROSAT HRI and PSPC observations after 1994. The Chandra image obtained in 2000 May, however, shows an X-ray source at its position within the instrumental uncertainties. The Chandra source is coincident with a star-like object in the Digitized-Sky-Survey. A Hubble image suggests that the optical object may be extended. While these three observations could be of the same object, which may be an X-ray binary containing a black-hole candidate, the possibility that the ROSAT and Chandra sources are two different objects in a dense stellar environment cannot be ruled out. The Hubble data suggests that the optical object may be a globular cluster yet to be identified.

Detection of X-ray Emission From Galaxies Inside The Bootes Void

We report the x-ray properties of Bootes void galaxies detected by the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS). By searching the fields of 26 radio and 27 emission-line-selected void galaxies, we have detected 9 x-ray emitting void galaxies at >2.7-sigma confidence level. Five of these 9 galaxies are in the IP,AS subsample. We expect 2 detections at the redshift of the Bootes void based on previous positional cross-correlation studies of the RASS and IRAS Point Source Catalogue sources. Three of the x-ray emitting galaxies are AGNs (IRAS~14288+5255, Mrk~845, and IRAS 15195+5050), and the remaining 6 are all likely emission line galaxies (PC~1357+4641, CG~547, CG~922, IRAS~14SOO+4804, CG~637, and IRAS~15092+3940). The far infrared flux levels of the AGN sources implies most of the observed x-ray emissivity is from starburst activity. We have carried out timing and spectral analysis for the narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk~845. Poor statistics prevents detailed analysis of the remaining sources. only two galaxies in our sample, BHI 1514+3819 and FSS 1515+3823, were observed during ROSAT pointed observations resulting in a nondetection at the 1-sigma level.
