ACTS: Technology Description and Results

The ACTS Project was originated at NASA Glenn Research Center in the early 1980's to sponsor the development and application of technology that was intended to be used by the private sector. The program was formulated with the underlying philosophy of maintaining US leadership in satellite communications while focusing technology development for efficient use of the frequency spectrum. This report chronicles the execution and results of the program from the perspective of its technology managers, from inception through hardware and system development to on-orbit experiments and demonstrations of the technology. The first eight sections of the report discuss programmatic background, the specific satellite and ground terminal technology and the results generated by the program including industry relevance. A federally funded program of this type attracted strong advocates and adversaries and the resulting impact on the project schedule is also discussed. The last two sections are a list of useful acronyms and extensive references.

Results from ACTS Development and On-Orbit Operations

The Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) was sponsored by NASA to develop the technology for 30/20 Ghz, spot beam communications satellites with on-board baseband and microwave matrix switching. The spot beams allow the use of very small aperture, low cost terminals as well as provide a large degree of frequency reuse. These technologies also significantly reduce the on-orbit weight per unit communication capacity. The ACTS system provides, for the most part, on-demand, integrated digital satellite /terrestrial networks with service data rates from 64 Kbps to 622 Mbps. This paper discusses the results obtained from the ACTS development and its first two years of on-orbit operations for fixed and mobile services.

Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS)

An overview of the NASA ACTS program is presented. The key technologies of ACTS include spot beams, on-board baseband processing and routing, wide bandwidth (900 MHz), and Ka-band transponders. The discussion covers system description, current status of the spacecraft development, ACTS earth stations, NGS traffic terminal, USAT, land and aeronautical mobiles, high data rate and propagation receive only terminals, and ACTS experiments program.

Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS)

The NASA Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) was conceived to help maintain U.S. leadership in the world's communications-satellite market. This experimental satellite is expected to be launched by NASA in 1992 and to furnish the technology necessary for establishing very small aperture terminal digital networks which provide on-demand full-mesh connectivity, and 1.544-MBPS services with only a single hop. Utilizing on-board switching and processing, each individual voice or data circuit can be separately routed to any location in the network. This paper provides an overview of the ACTS and discusses the value of the technology for future communications systems.
