An apparatus for the specific heat measurement of undercooled liquids

This paper describes a drop calorimeter with an electromagnetic levitator that was specifically built for enthalpy measurements of undercooled liquids, including high-melting-point metals. Design diagrams of this device and of a furnace for making a suspended drop are presented together with results of measurements on an aluminum sample.

Joule-Thomson Expander Without Check Valves

Cooling effected by bidirectional, reciprocating flow of gas. Type of Joule-Thomson (J-T) expander for cryogenic cooling requires no check valves to prevent reverse flow of coolant. More reliable than conventional J-T expander, containing network of check valves, each potential source of failure. Gas flows alternately from left to right and right to left. Heat load cooled by evaporation of liquid from left or right compartment, whichever at lower pressure.

Coating a Sphere With Evaporated Metal

In vacuum coating apparatus, metal evaporated onto sphere from small source located some distance away. Sphere held in path of metal vapor while rotated about axis that rocks back and forth. One tilting motion particularly easy to produce is sinusoidal rocking with frequency much lower than rotational frequency. Apparatus developed for coating single-crystal sapphire spheres with niobium.

The Spacelab 2 superfluid helium experiment

An experiment to investigate the properties of superfluid helium in a microgravity environment flew on the Shuttle on the Spacelab 2 mission in July and August of 1985. This paper summarizes the flight experiment and describes the preliminary results. The experiment comprised an investigation of long-wavelength third-sound waves in micron-thick films, a study of the motions of superfluid helium under milli-g and micro-g accelerations, and measurements of the fluctuations in temperature associated with the small motions of the bulk helium. An additional accomplishment was to qualify and characterize a reflyable, space compatible cryostat.

Evaporative coating of a sphere from a point source

To optimize the procedure for evaporating a metal film onto a sphere, calculations of the film thickness distribution for various motions of the sphere have been carried out. These calculations, including shadowing effects of sphere support rods, are presented in this paper. Also, an apparatus and procedure for the evaporative coating of a sphere are described. A comparison of measured thickness with the calculated values is made for one example of sphere motion. The implications of the calculated results for coating techniques are discussed.

"Bottle-Brush" Heat Exchanger

Heat exchanger consists of a metal tube with wires extending inward from wall. Conduction of heat along wires improves heat transfer to gas or other filling. Fluid is heated throughout the cross section of tube. Suggested applications are refrigerators, heat engines, thermal instrumentation, and heat switches.

Thin-film temperature sensor

Sensor measures rapid temperature changes in fluid streams. Sensor withstands contacts with various corrosive fluids, high fluid-flow rates, and turbulences caused by rapid changes in flow rates. Capacitor is part of resonant bridge circuit which produces ac voltage that is proportional to temperature.
