The Voyager mission to Jupiter and Saturn

This paper presents a description of the Voyager mission, in which two United States spacecraft flew by and made scientific observations of Jupiter and Saturn and their satellites. The design of the mission, including mission objectives, trajectory characteristics, and navigation system are depicted, and the spacecraft engineering systems and subsystems are described. The complement of science instruments, the command system, and the tracking and data acquisition systems, are also summarized. Finally, some of the results of the mission are presented.

Command and control of unmanned scientific spacecraft

Recent developments in command and control technology for use with the Voyager and the planned Galileo are discussed. These spacecraft each carry more than 10 scientific instruments, many of which are very complex, and these instruments must be able to function with a considerable degree of autonomy because the round-trip light time to the spacecraft in the vicinity of Jupiter and Saturn is too great to permit prompt ground-based management of onboard anomalies or control of some observation programs. Command and control procedures, including data storage procedures, for systems of the two spacecraft are examined.

The Voyager Program

On August 20 and September 5, 1977, Voyager spacecraft were launched on voyages of exploration to the outer planets of our solar system. Each spacecraft will fly close to Jupiter and Saturn, and one of the spacecraft may fly to Uranus. The spacecraft carry eleven scientific instruments, which will yield a wide range of scientific information about Jupiter, Saturn, their satellites, and the environment around these giant planets. This paper describes the Voyager mission, its scientific experiments and instruments, and the spacecraft. Also included is a summary of the events which have occurred thus far in the flight of these spacecraft.
