Electron parameter correlations in high-speed streams and heat flux instabilities

Statistical electron parameter correlations associated with high-speed streams are determined with the aim of identifying one or more locally active solar wind heat flux instabilities. Evidence that points toward local regulation of the heat flux at 1 AU is presented, and the results of a search for special signatures expected from the action of the Alfven, magnetosonic, and whistler flux instabilities are discussed. It is shown that under certain conditions, the whistler mode can be active in regulating the heat flux at 1 AU.

Coherent ion acceleration at a density gradient

The paper describes a model, in which ions are accelerated against the direction of the electric field at a density gradient. A one-dimensional, inhomogeneous, steady-state is constructed, in which cold electrons stream relative to cold ions. The wavenumber and amplitude of the fluctuating potential are calculated, then used to compute the trajectories of representative ions trapped in the potential troughs. Ion acceleration to energies an order of magnitude greater than the applied potential is demonstrated.

Ion heating in a plasma focus

Ion acceleration and heating in a plasma focus were investigated by the numerical integration of the three-dimensional equations of motion. The electric and magnetic fields given were derived from experimental data. The results obtained show that during the collapse phase of focus formation, ions are efficiently heated to temperatures of several keV. During the phase of rapid current reduction, ions are accelerated to large velocities in the axial direction. The results obtained with the model are in general agreement with experimental results.

Ion acceleration in a plasma focus

The electric and magnetic fields associated with anomalous diffusion to the axis of a linear plasma discharge are used to compute representative ion trajectories. Substantial axial acceleration of the ions is demonstrated.

Ion kinematics in a plasma focus.

The results of numerical integrations of three-dimensional equations of motion of ions subject to given electric and magnetic fields are presented. The fields represent those which may exist in the pinch phase of the plasma focus, although here they depend only on the radial coordinate. The ions initially have Maxwellian velocity distributions, and their trajectories are interpreted in terms of single-particle constants of the motion. Two models of the axial electric field Ez are considered. For strong Ez away from the axis, there is a cyclotron acceleration which leads to ion heating. For positive Ez on the axis, ions within a Larmor radius of the axis undergo very efficient acceleration; the results for this new model are in general agreement with experimental results.

Longitudinal waves in a perpendicular collisionless plasma shock. IV - Gradient B.

The consideration of elastic waves in a Vlasov plasma of unmagnetized ions and magnetized electrons undergoing E x B electron drift and gradient B drift, pursued in the earlier three parts, is brought to conclusion in this last part of the longitudinal wave study in a collisionless plasma shock. Detailed calculations of the effects of the beta sub e dimensionless parameter on the E x B electron drift instability are presented. It is shown that the range of propagation of the elastic waves about the perpendicular remains quite narrow, and that, for oblique propagation, the already narrow angular range of unstable waves is decreased by increases in the value of the beta sub e dimensionless parameter. Also, increases in wave number generally reduce the growth rate and the angular range of propagation.

Longitudinal waves in a perpendicular collisionless plasma shock. III.

This paper considers electrostatic waves in a Vlasov plasma of unmagnetized ions and magnetized electrons undergoing an E x B drift. The linear dispersion relation is solved numerically for an electron temperature approximately equal to the ion temperature. For a fixed ratio of drift velocity to electron thermal velocity, the growth rates of the E x B electron drift instability are smaller, and the waves are stabilized at much smaller values of k.B than in the case where electron temperature is much larger than the ion temperature.
