Energy deposition in a gaseous mixture

Existing models in planetary aeronomy involve a variety of possible gaseous mixtures subjected to charged particle bombardment. In the present paper, a phenomenological approach to electron degradation in such mixtures is proposed to facilitate analysis of such problems. Existing parameterized yield spectra for a variety of gases, computed by a discrete energy bin method, are used as a basis for constructing a parameterized composite yield spectrum for an arbitrary mixture. The approach proposed is an improvement over the continuous slow-down approximation in that discreteness is taken into account phenomenologically. The advantages are in the ease of application to aeronomical problems involving variable mixtures.

Electron impact on atmospheric gases. I - Updated cross sections

The analytic characterizations of electron impact cross sections for important atmospheric gases (namely, O2, N2, O, CO, CO2, and He) are updated. With these cross sections it is simple to communicate massive quantities of experimental and theoretical results. In addition, these forms are convenient for applications in energy degradation calculations, including a new approach described in a companion paper.

Electron impact on atmospheric gases. II - Yield spectra

A concept yield spectrum is introduced and this two-dimensional function is calculated, using a modified discrete energy bin method for 50-eV to 10-keV incident electrons impacting on the gases Ar, H2, H2O, O2, N2, O, CO, CO2, and He. The yield spectrum is amenable to physical interpretation, accurate analytic representation, and convenient application to the determination of all types of yields needed in aeronomical problems.

Yield spectra and the continuous-slowing-down approximation

The continuous-slowing-down approximation (CSDA) and the modified discrete-energy-bin (MDEB) method are used to calculate a yield spectra U(E, E sub 0) of electrons with energy E resulting from a primary of energy E sub 0. The results of the two calculations are then compared. The MDEB method is found to produce consistently more ions per energy loss while at the same time producing less excitations of some of the low-lying states when compared with the CSDA. These discrepancies can be explained by studying the contributions from the individual generations of electrons to the yield spectra. An integral equation for the solution of the yield spectra is also presented.
