Evaluation of a 256 x 256 Si:As IBC detector array for astronomy

256 x 256-element IBC Si:As arrays have been evaluated for applications in IR astronomy from space-borne platforms. Basic figures of merit were measured at IR flux levels simulating those expected in space-based astronomical observations. Results include dark current less than 20 e(-)/s, G-eta as high as 3.8, eta/beta of 20%, and read noise below 100 rms(e(-)).

Infrared and visible photometry of the gravitational lens systems 2237 + 030

As part of a program of high spatial resolution imaging of gravitationally lensed sources in the visible and IR, images of 2237 + 030 were obtained in the Gunn r and infrared J, H, K, and 3.3 micron filters. The results of the photometry of the four bright quasar components provide evidence of extinction through the lens and a determination of the extinction law in the galaxy is made. The energy distribution shows evidence of a sharp decrease of the spectral index at wavelengths longer than a rest wavelength of 1 micron. Assuming that microlensing amplification in the IR is of similar strength as in the visible, the data constrain the suggested microlensing event of August-September 1988 to a time scale of 100 days.

Subarcsecond resolution observations of the central parsec of the Galaxy at 2.2 microns

Four separate lunar occultations of the Galactic center in the infrared K-band have been observed, and the results are used to estimate the size of the sources and to derive photometry. It is found that IRS 16NE, 16NW, and IRS 29 are smaller than about 510 AU and IRS 16SW-W and C are smaller than 85 AU. All sources brighter than K = 10 mag in the central pc are smaller than 510 AU and therefore seem to be stars. IRS 7 is smaller than about 100 AU. IRS 1W and 13, resolved into pairs of stars, are probably the exciting stars for these H II regions. The shape of the differential luminosity function of the stars in the central sq pc is similar to that of stars in the central 150 sq pc. There is a steady increase in star density toward the central few arcsec of the Galaxy.

InSb DRO array characteristics

Researchers tested 58 x 62 low-doped InSb diode arrays bonded to MOSFET readouts for their performance potential in a low background space environment. Of primary concern were the quantum efficiency, dark current and read noise. The quantum efficiency (45 percent at 3.3 microns) and dark current (less than 2.4e(-)/s) were found to be adequate for the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) experiments, while the read noise (200 e(-) RMS) was found to be wanting. More subtle concerns, such as image quality, linearity/calibratibility and flat fielding were also investigated. In these respects the arrays appear to be well suited for the high sensitivity, photometric accuracy, and image clarity demanded by the SIRTF experiments.

Discovery of low mass objects in Taurus

In infrared (2.2 micron, K-band) search of small regions (25 in square) near 26 members of the Taurus star-forming association has revealed 20 dim (K = 13-16 mag) stellar objects near 13 of them. Of these 20 objects, 9 are exceptionally red. It is argued that these 9 are probably also Taurus members. From the luminosities (0.4 to 4 times 10 the -3 power luminosity) and ages (estimated at 10(exp 6) years), masses can be determined by reference to theoretical low-mass cooling curves. The masses are in the range 0.005 to 0.015 solar mass, i.e., low-mass brown dwarfs. Proper motion studies of 7 of the objects visible on the POSS plates conducted by Burton Jones establish that 4 are highly probable Taurus members while 1 is a possible member.
