Stoichiometry–Induced Ferromagnetism in Altermagnetic Candidate MnTe

The field of spintronics has seen a surge of interest in altermagnetism due to novel predictions and many possible applications. MnTe is a leading altermagnetic candidate that is of significant interest across spintronics due to its layered antiferromagnetic structure, high Neel temperature (T N ≈ 310 K) and semiconducting properties. The results on molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) grown MnTe/InP(111) films are presented. Here, it is found that the electronic and magnetic properties are driven by the natural stoichiometry of MnTe. Electronic transport and in situ angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy show the films are natively metallic with the Fermi level in the valence band and the band structure is in good agreement with first-principles calculations for altermagnetic spin-splitting. Neutron diffraction confirms that the film is antiferromagnetic with planar anisotropy and polarized neutron reflectometry indicates weak ferromagnetism, which is linked to a slight Mn-richness that is intrinsic to the MBE-grown samples. Further, when combined with the anomalous Hall effect, this work shows that the electronic response is strongly affected by the ferromagnetic moment. Altogether, this highlights potential mechanisms for controlling altermagnetic ordering for diverse spintronic applications.

Synthesis, disorder and Ising anisotropy in a new spin liquid candidate PrMgAl 11 O 19

Here we report the successful synthesis of large single crystals of triangular frustrated PrMgAl 11 O 19 using the optical floating zone technique. Single crystal x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements unveiled the presence of quenched disorder within the mirror plane, specifically ~7% of Pr ions deviating from the ideal 2d site towards the 6h site. Magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed an Ising anisotropy with the c-axis being the easy axis. Despite a large spin–spin interaction that develops below ~10 K and considerable site disorder, the spins do not order or freeze down to at least 50 mK. The availability of large single crystals offers a distinct opportunity to investigate the exotic magnetic state on a triangular lattice with an easy axis out of the plane.

Glassy correlated state induced by disorder in the frustrated antiferromagnet Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7

Here, we study the low-temperature thermomagnetic properties of the polycrystalline material Tb 2 Zr 2 O 7 through ac susceptibility and specific heat measurements. This zirconate displays a defect-fluorite structure in which the magnetic Tb 3+ and nonmagnetic Zr 4+ cations sit randomly on the same metal sublattice. No long-range magnetic order is found down to 100 mK, although dominant antiferromagnetic interactions are observed and the spins remain dynamic down to the lowest temperatures investigated. We observed a frequency-dependent peak around 2.5 K which is well described by many models of a canonical spin-glass transition. In-field specific heat measurements and the recovered entropy of the system R ln(4) suggest a two doublets ground state separated by 7 K. Comparisons to the pyrochlores Tb 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Tb 2 Hf 2 O 7 reinforce the collective spin-glass-type behavior and the opening for discussions of an exotic Coulomb phase in this material.

Angular‐Momentum Transfer Mediated by a Vibronic‐Bound‐State

Abstract The notion that phonons can carry pseudo‐angular momentum has many major consequences, including topologically protected phonon chirality, Berry curvature of phonon band structure, and the phonon Hall effect. When a phonon is resonantly coupled to an orbital state split by its crystal field environment, a so‐called vibronic bound state forms. Here, a vibronic bound state is observed in NaYbSe 2 , a quantum spin liquid candidate. In addition, field and polarization dependent Raman microscopy is used to probe an angular momentum transfer of Δ J z = ±ℏ between phonons and the crystalline electric field mediated by the vibronic bound stat. This angular momentum transfer between electronic and lattice subsystems provides new pathways for selective optical addressability of phononic angular momentum via electronic ancillary states.

Emergent Magnetism with Continuous Control in the Ultrahigh-Conductivity Layered Oxide PdCoO 2

The current challenge to realizing continuously tunable magnetism lies in our inability to systematically change properties, such as valence, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom, as well as crystallographic geometry. Here, we demonstrate that ferromagnetism can be externally turned on with the application of low-energy helium implantation and can be subsequently erased and returned to the pristine state via annealing. We find that this high level of continuous control is made possible by targeting magnetic metastability in the ultrahigh-conductivity, nonmagnetic layered oxide PdCoO 2 where local lattice distortions generated by helium implantation induce the emergence of a net moment on the surrounding transition metal octahedral sites. These highly localized moments communicate through the itinerant metal states, which trigger the onset of percolated long-range ferromagnetism. The ability to continuously tune competing interactions enables tailoring precise magnetic and magnetotransport responses in an ultrahigh-conductivity film and will be critical to applications across spintronics.

Weak trimerization in the frustrated two-dimensional triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3

To understand the 2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnetic system, we investigated the magnetic structures and the dynamics of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 in detail. The substitutions are adjusted to the Mn atomic position close to x Mn =$\frac{1}{3}$. The neutron powder diffraction data claims that the magnetic structure of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 is described as a mixture of Γ 3 (P6' 3 cm') and Γ 4 (P6' 3 c'm) at the x Mn position for y=0.15, 0.30, and 0.45. The ratio of Γ 3 and Γ 4 depends on temperature and composition and the fraction of Γ 3 increases upon cooling, while no clear trimerization was observed at the xMn position. We estimated exchange parameters from the analysis of the low-energy part of the spin waves. The results showed a weak trimerization effect on cooling because the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction is slightly enhanced. The temperature dependence of the spin-wave dispersion around the Γ point shows that the spin gap closes with increasing temperature because the exchange interactions in the nearest Mn-Mn neighbor become smaller. Gapless diffusive magnetic excitation from a Mn triangular lattice has been observed in a wide range in Q and E space of Lu y Y 1-y MnO 3 . We found that Lu 0.3 Y 0.7 MnO 3 could be an ideal case to investigate the trimerization, frustrated magnetism, and magnetoelastic coupling often observed in two-dimensional triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet systems.
