First Dark Matter Search Results from the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60~live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c 2 . The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36 GeV/c 2 , rejecting cross sections above 9.2×10 –48 cm 2 at the 90% confidence level.

HAWC Study of the Ultra-high-energy Spectrum of MGRO J1908+06

We report TeV gamma-ray observations of the ultra-high-energy source MGRO J1908+06 using data from the High Altitude Water Cherenkov Observatory. This source is one of the highest-energy known gamma-ray sources, with emission extending past 200 TeV. Modeling suggests that the bulk of the TeV gamma-ray emission is leptonic in nature, driven by the energetic radio-faint pulsar PSR J1907+0602. Depending on what assumptions are included in the model, a hadronic component may also be allowed. Using the results of the modeling, we discuss implications for detection prospects by multi-messenger campaigns.

HAWC observations of the acceleration of very-high-energy cosmic rays in the Cygnus Cocoon

We report cosmic rays with energies up to a few PeV are known to be accelerated within the Milky Way. Traditionally, it has been presumed that supernova remnants were the main source of these very-high-energy cosmic rays, but theoretically it is difficult to accelerate protons to PeV energies and observationally there simply is no evidence of the remnants being sources of hadrons with energies above a few tens of TeV. One possible source of protons with those energies is the Galactic Centre region9. Here, we report observations of 1–100 TeV γ rays coming from the ‘Cygnus Cocoon’, which is a superbubble that surrounds a region of massive star formation. These γ rays are likely produced by 10–1,000 TeV freshly accelerated cosmic rays that originate from the enclosed star-forming region Cyg OB2. Until now it was not known that such regions could accelerate particles to these energies. The measured flux likely originates from hadronic interactions. The spectral shape and the emission profile of the Cocoon changes from GeV to TeV energies, which reveals the transport of cosmic particles and historical activity in the superbubble.

Evidence of 200 TeV Photons from HAWC J1825-134

The Earth is bombarded by ultrarelativistic particles, known as cosmic rays (CRs). CRs with energies up to a few PeV (=10 15 eV), the knee in the particle spectrum, are believed to have a Galactic origin. One or more factories of PeV CRs, or PeVatrons, must thus be active within our Galaxy. The direct detection of PeV protons from their sources is not possible since they are deflected in the Galactic magnetic fields. Hundred TeV γ-rays from decaying π 0 , produced when PeV CRs collide with the ambient gas, can provide the decisive evidence of proton acceleration up to the knee. Here we report the discovery by the High Altitude Water Cerenkov (HAWC) observatory of the γ-ray source, HAWC J1825-134, whose energy spectrum extends well beyond 200 TeV without a break or cutoff. The source is found to be coincident with a giant molecular cloud. Further, the ambient gas density is as high as 700 protons cm –3 . While the nature of this extreme accelerator remains unclear, CRs accelerated to energies of several PeV colliding with the ambient gas likely produce the observed radiation.

Multimessenger Gamma-Ray and Neutrino Coincidence Alerts Using HAWC and IceCube Subthreshold Data

The High Altitude Water Cerenkov (HAWC) and IceCube observatories, through the Astrophysical Multimessenger Observatory Network (AMON) framework, have developed a multimessenger joint search for extragalactic astrophysical sources. This analysis looks for sources that emit both cosmic neutrinos and gamma rays that are produced in photohadronic or hadronic interactions. The AMON system is running continuously, receiving subthreshold data (i.e., data that are not suited on their own to do astrophysical searches) from HAWC and IceCube, and combining them in real time. Here we present the analysis algorithm, as well as results from archival data collected between 2015 June and 2018 August, with a total live time of 3.0 yr. During this period we found two coincident events that have a false-alarm rate (FAR) of <1 coincidence yr -1 , consistent with the background expectations. The real-time implementation of the analysis in the AMON system began on 2019 November 20 and issues alerts to the community through the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network with an FAR threshold of <4 coincidences yr -1 .

Systematic Calculation of Pu Pourbaix Diagrams: Modelling Support for the LANL ACRSP Team

The report enclosed entitled “Systematic Calculation of Pu Pourbaix Diagrams: Modelling Support of the LANL ACRSP Team” was prepared by Amphos21 under contract to the Los Alamos National Laboratory Actinide Chemistry and Repository Science Program (ACRSP) team to support an enhanced understanding of the actinide and brine chemistry in the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) transuranic repository. In this report, the ThermoChimie chemistry model and database, with some slight modifications, were used to calculate Pourbaix diagrams to investigate the effects of ionic strength, organic complexation, and metal competition on the predominance diagrams for aqueous and solid plutonium species under the anoxic and reducing conditions expected in the repository. These diagrams were connected to iron chemistry phase diagrams since this iron chemistry is expected to define and control redox properties in the WIPP repository concept.

Constraints on Lorentz Invariance Violation from HAWC Observations of Gamma Rays above 100 TeV

Because of the high energies and long distances to the sources, astrophysical observations provide a unique opportunity to test possible signatures of Lorentz invariance violation (LIV). Superluminal LIV enables the decay of photons at high energy. The high altitude water Cherenkov (HAWC) observatory is among the most sensitive gamma-ray instruments currently operating above 10 TeV. HAWC finds evidence of 100 TeV photon emission from at least four astrophysical sources. These observations exclude, for the strongest of the limits set, the LIV energy scale to 2.2 × 10 31 eV , over 1800 times the Planck energy and an improvement of 1 to 2 orders of magnitude over previous limits.

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) Experiment

We describe the design and assembly of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, a direct detection search for cosmic WIMP dark matter particles. The centerpiece of the experiment is a large liquid xenon time projection chamber sensitive to low energy nuclear recoils. Rejection of backgrounds is enhanced by a Xe skin veto detector and by a liquid scintillator Outer Detector loaded with gadolinium for efficient neutron capture and tagging. LZ is located in the Davis Cavern at the 4850’ level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. We describe the major subsystems of the experiment and its key design features and requirements.

Megawatt solar power systems for lunar surface operations

The work presented here shows that a solar power system can provide power on the order of one megawatt to a lunar base with a fairly high specific power. The main drawback to using solar power is still the high mass, and therefore, cost of supplying energy storage through the solar night. The use of cryogenic reactant storage in a fuel cell system, however, greatly reduces the total system mass over conventional energy storage schemes.

The influence of radiation shielding on reusable nuclear shuttle design

Alternate reusable nuclear shuttle configurations were synthesized and evaluated. Particular attention was given to design factors which reduced tank exposure to direct and scattered radiation, increased payload-engine separation, and improved self-shielding by the LH2 propellant. The most attractive RNS concept in terms of cost effectiveness consists of a single conical aft bulkhead tank with a high fineness ratio. Launch is accomplished by the INT-21 with the tank positioned in the inverted attitude. The NERVA engine is delivered to orbit separately where final stage assembly and checkout are accomplished. This approach is consistent with NERVA definition criteria and required operating procedures to support an economically viable nuclear shuttle transportation program in the post-1980 period.
