Piezoelectric Actuators On A Cold Finger

Developmental system for active suppression of vibrations of cold finger includes three piezoelectric actuators bonded to outer surface. Actuators used to suppress longitudinal and lateral vibrations of upper end of cold finger by applying opposing vibrations. Cold finger in question is part of a cryogenic system associated with an infrared imaging detector. When fully developed, system would be feedback sensor/control/actuator system automatically adapting to changing vibrational environment and suppresses pressure-induced vibrations by imposing compensatory vibrations via actuators.

Advances in adaptive structures at Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Future proposed NASA missions with the need for large deployable or erectable precision structures will require solutions to many technical problems. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is developing new technologies in Adaptive Structures to meet these challenges. The technology requirements, approaches to meet the requirements using Adaptive Structures, and the recent JPL research results in Adaptive Structures are described.

Adaptive structures for precision controlled large space systems

The development of adaptive structural systems is reviewed and the potential of these systems in meeting some of the requirements for NASA future space missions is demonstrated. Particular attention is given to the characteristics of a viscous damper in the micron displacement regime; the optimal placement of active and passive members into a truss structure; a system identification test using the active members as excitation sources; a concept for deforming a lightweight composite honeycomb optical panel to correct for on-orbit distortions by using piezoelectric actuators attached to the back facesheet; and the results of an active member vibration control experiment in a reduced gravity environment.

Two Techniques For Suppressing Vibrations In Structures

Two techniques intended to be used together to suppress vibrations in large, complicated truss structure involve combination of active and passive damping. Based on bridge feedback and criterion for placement of actuators. Research continues to develop system using these and other techniques to suppress vibrations in, and help control shape of, truss structure in outer space that supports precise, segmented reflector of communication antenna. On Earth, developmental techniques applicable to suppression of vibrations in bridges and tall buildings.

Adaptive structures for precision controlled large space systems

The stringent accuracy and ground test validation requirements of some of the future space missions will require new approaches in structural design. Adaptive structures, structural systems that can vary their geometric congiguration as well as their physical properties, are primary candidates for meeting the functional requirements for such missions. Research performed in the development of such adaptive structural systems is described.

Ground test validation for precision structures

Future proposed NASA missions will require large precision truss type structures that are deployed or assembled in space. To date, space structures that are important to missions success have been ground tested to validate their performance. Evaluation of the performance requirements of future systems has shown that using current and projected design and test approaches, the structure cannot be adequately validated by ground test. A problem exists since it is believed that unless important structure systems can be validated by ground tests, they will never be adopted for future missions. New design or ground test approaches are necessary to enable future missions. The inability of current approaches to validate future structural systems is discussed.

U.S. perspective on technology demonstration experiments for adaptive structures

Evaluation of design concepts for adaptive structures is being performed in support of several focused research programs. These include programs such as Precision Segmented Reflector (PSR), Control Structure Interaction (CSI), and the Advanced Space Structures Technology Research Experiment (ASTREX). Although not specifically designed for adaptive structure technology validation, relevant experiments can be performed using the Passive and Active Control of Space Structures (PACOSS) testbed, the Space Integrated Controls Experiment (SPICE), the CSI Evolutionary Model (CEM), and the Dynamic Scale Model Test (DSMT) Hybrid Scale. In addition to the ground test experiments, several space flight experiments have been planned, including a reduced gravity experiment aboard the KC-135 aircraft, shuttle middeck experiments, and the Inexpensive Flight Experiment (INFLEX).

Experiments On Active Members In Large Space Structures

Report discusses continuing research on structures including active members, which incorporate sensors, actuators, and electronic circuits to monitor and control vibrations. Describes experiments on two structures with active members, progress in design, testing, and simulation of behavior of active members. Objective is to develop systems to enhance performances of large, flexible structures in space. Also applicable to some terrestrial structures and testing equipment involving close tolerances in feedback control of forces and/or positions.

Computational complexities and storage requirements of some Riccati equation solvers

The linear optimal control problem of an nth-order time-invariant dynamic system with a quadratic performance functional is usually solved by the Hamilton-Jacobi approach. This leads to the solution of the differential matrix Riccati equation with a terminal condition. The bulk of the computation for the optimal control problem is related to the solution of this equation. There are various algorithms in the literature for solving the matrix Riccati equation. However, computational complexities and storage requirements as a function of numbers of state variables, control variables, and sensors are not available for all these algorithms. In this work, the computational complexities and storage requirements for some of these algorithms are given. These expressions show the immensity of the computational requirements of the algorithms in solving the Riccati equation for large-order systems such as the control of highly flexible space structures. The expressions are also needed to compute the speedup and efficiency of any implementation of these algorithms on concurrent machines.

Placement Of Exciters And Sensors To Measure Vibrations

Report discusses use of simulated-annealing algorithm to place exciters and sensors of vibrations at nearly optimal positions in complicated structure. Because there are generally fewer exciters and sensors than degrees of freedom in structure, optimal-placement algorithm needed to maximize value of resulting incomplete set of measurements for verification of amplitudes and frequencies of previously-computed vibrational modes.

Loads and low frequency dynamics - An ENVIRONET data base

The loads and low frequency dynamics data base, part of Environet, is described with particular attention given to its development and contents. The objective of the data base is to provide the payload designer with design approaches and design data to meet STS safety requirements. Currently the data base consists of the following sections: abstract, scope, glossary, requirements, interaction with other environments, summary of the loads analysis process, design considerations, guidelines for payload design loads, information data base, and references.

Verification of large beam-type space structures

The verification approach of large beam type space structures is verified. The proposed verification approach consists of two parts. The first part is to remove the gravity effect on the tested substructure and to identify the on-orbit dynamic characteristics of the substructure by using the measurements of the ground test. A scaling law is also established to define the critical length of the structure which can be tested in 1-g field without incurring a buckling problem. The second part is to develop an adequate scaling law to extrapolate the dynamic characteristics of the prototype structure by using results from the substructure. The verification approaches are demonstrated on two typical structural configurations, the feed support structure of a wrap-rip antenna and a candidate shuttle flight experiment. The results indicate that it is practical to verify the on-orbit dynamic characteristics of these structures by using the proposed approach.

On orbit damage assessment for large space structures

The need for monitoring the dynamic characteristics of large structural systems, for the purpose of assessing the potential degradation of structural properties, has been established. This paper develops a theory for assessing the occurrence, location, and extent of potential damage utilizing on-orbit response measurements. The feasibility of the method is demonstrated using a simple structural system as an example.
