Phase Transitions in Amorphous Germanium under Non-Hydrostatic Compression

As the pioneer semiconductor in transistor, germanium (Ge) has been widely applied in information technology for over half a century. Although many phase transitions in Ge have been reported, the complicated phenomena of the phase structures in amorphous Ge under extreme conditions are still not fully investigated. Here, we report the different routes of phase transition in amorphous Ge under different compression conditions utilizing diamond anvil cell (DAC) combined with synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Upon non-hydrostatic compression of amorphous Ge, we observed that shear stress facilitates a reversible pressure-induced phase transformation, in contrast to the pressure-quenchable structure under a hydrostatic compression. These findings afford better understanding of the structural behaviors of Ge under extreme conditions, which contributes to more potential applications in the semiconductor field.

Ultrafast conformational dynamics of Rydberg-excited N -methyl piperidine

We have observed the ultrafast conformational dynamics of electronically excited N-methyl piperidine (NMP) using time-resolved Rydberg fingerprint spectroscopy. Optical excitation at various wavelengths ranging from 212 nm to 229 nm leads to the 3s or 3p Rydberg states and induces coherent oscillatory motions with periods of about 700 fs. Furthermore, these coherent motions survive the internal conversion from 3p to 3s but then dephase on a time scale of a few oscillations. Intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution on a picosecond time scale leads to an equilibrium between two conformeric structures that are separated in binding energy by 0.09 eV. Model calculations using the DFT-SIC method are in excellent agreement with the experiments and identify the conformers as the chair and twist structures of NMP. The analysis of the equilibrium parameters at long time delays as a function of excitation wavelength allows for the extraction of thermodynamic parameters for the conformeric transformation. We derive an enthalpy of the chair to twist reaction in the 3s excited state of 62 meV with an entropy of 19.70 J mol –1 K –1 . An activation energy of 276 meV is also obtained with a kinetic model.

Measuring residual stress in Ti-6Al-4V with HR-EBSD, using reference patterns from annealed material

In this study, elastic strain and residual stress values in an engineering material were determined by high-resolution EBSD (HR-EBSD) using reference patterns from annealed, recrystallized material. Specifically, rolled Ti-6Al-4V sheet was analyzed using HR EBSD in both an as-annealed and a strained state, the latter established via a static two-point bend fixture. The commercial software CrossCourt4 (CC4) was used to evaluate the relative intragranular strain tensor components of the alpha grains mapped by HR-EBSD. The intragranular reference patterns identified in each grain by the software were then replaced with similarly-oriented patterns from scans of the as-annealed, recrystallized material. The CC4 analysis was then repeated to provide calibrated strain and residual stress values. Elastic strains on the order of 10–3 were detected, with corresponding residual stress values on the order of 1 GPa. Subsequent analyses using high energy synchrotron x-ray diffraction showed good correlation with the elastic strains measured by HR-EBSD using the annealed reference patterns. Additionally, the maximum macroscopic stress analytically predicted for two-point bending was in agreement with the residual stress observed. Good repeatability of the methodology and insight into the state of individual grains were also observed. The findings provide encouraging evidence that accurate intragranular and long-range residual stress measurements of engineering significance can be made with HR-EBSD using a physical reference pattern library.

An improved method for direct incident solar radiation calculation from hourly solar insolation data in building energy simulation

Solar radiation considerably influences the energy consumption of buildings and the power production of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems. Hourly solar insolation (Wh/m 2 ), represented as the amount of solar irradiance collected on the ground during a 1-h period, is the most common solar radiation data available and widely used in weather files applied in building energy modeling programs (BEMPs). Because the solar beam and position vary over time, the use of hourly insolation data as the input might result in errors in the estimation of the direct incident solar radiation on a particular surface. In this study, methods used in BEMPs for direct incident solar radiation calculations are first analyzed, and an improved method adopting a new algorithm for estimating the solar irradiance is proposed. Furthermore, the algorithm assumes that the solar irradiance changes linearly within a 1-h period and can be estimated based on the solar irradiance at the half clock and slope. The collected direct normal solar irradiance data of 2016 from eight solar radiation stations in China were used to demonstrate the proposed method and evaluate its performance by comparing the results with those from three conventional methods used in BEMPs along with the ground truth measurements. In addition, in this study, factors affecting the accuracy of the calculation results are explored. The results of the estimated direct incident solar radiation show that the proposed method achieves the best accuracy, followed by the methods used in DOE-2, EnergyPlus, and DeST. The proposed method guarantees that the hourly direct solar insolation will remain the same and reflects the variation in the direct solar irradiance across a 1-h time frame. The proposed method can be adopted in BEMPs to improve the accuracy of the solar radiation calculation, thereby improving the accuracy of the simulated building performance and the BIPV production.

Back-Stress and Its Evolution during Primary Creep in Particle Strengthened Nickel Superalloys

According to Eshelby’s theory, inelastically inhomogeneous inclusions in a metallic matrix give rise to a distribution of internal stresses. In the case of particle strengthened materials, such as nickel base superalloys, the presence and evolution of this back-stress leads to various observable effects, such as primary creep, back-flow upon loading, and memory of prior deformation. This article presents the background of the concept of back-stress and how it applies to the scenario of creep. A derivation of an evolution equation for back-stress in the context of primary creep is also presented. The results from neutron diffraction with in-situ creep experiments on directionally solidified nickel superalloys are presented in order to demonstrate the validity of the proposed equation and the corollaries derived therefrom.

Basic Research Needs for Transformative Manufacturing

This report is based on a Basic Research Needs workshop for Transformative Manufacturing, which was held March 9 - 11, 2020. The focus of the workshop was to identify the basic science research priorities that could accelerate innovation to transform manufacturing in the future. This was the first workshop of its kind to examine how basic energy science can drive manufacturing forward and innovate new ways to manufacture goods. Five Priority Research Directions were identified that address these science challenges: (1) innovative synthetic approaches to enable scalable assembly of matter, (2) computational methods and theoretical models to transform how manufacturing processes are controlled, (3) new characterization tools that can handle the necessary complexity, scales, and processing speeds to meet manufacturing needs, (4) new science to address opportunities relevant to sustainable and energy efficient manufacturing, and (5) foundational approaches to co-design of materials, process, and products.

Understanding cation doping achieved by atomic layer deposition for high-performance Li-Ion batteries

As Li ion battery (LIB) technology develops, its nanoscale design is attracting more and more interest. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) has emerged as a promising technique to provide conformal and ultrathin coating for LIB materials. In this work, an iron oxide (FeO x ) ALD was performed on LiMn 1.5 Ni 0.5 O-5 4 (LMNO) cathode particles, followed by an annealing process. Here, Fe was doped into LMNO during the ALD process; and it was found that lattice oxygen loss and structural change of LMNO occurred at a reaction temperature of 450 °C under vacuum. Meanwhile, Fe diffused from the surface to the bulk of LMNO. After post-annealing, FeO x -coated LMNO recovered its structure and lattice oxygen under proper annealing conditions, and exhibited significant enhancement of specific capacity, rate capability, and cyclic stability.
