WKB Estimate of Bilayer Graphene’s Magic Twist Angles

We report that graphene bilayers exhibit zero-energy flatbands at a discrete series of magic twist angles. In the absence of intrasublattice interlayer hopping, zero-energy states satisfy a Dirac equation with a non-Abelian SU(2) gauge potential that cannot be diagonalized globally. We develop a semiclassical WKB approximation scheme for this Dirac equation by introducing a dimensionless Planck’s constant proportional to the twist angle, solving the linearized Dirac equation around AB and BA turning points, and connecting Airy function solutions via bulk WKB wave functions. We find zero-energy solutions at a discrete set of values of the dimensionless Planck’s constant, which we obtain analytically. Our analytic flatband twist angles correspond closely to those determined numerically in previous work.

Tracking ion intercalation into layered Ti 3 C 2 MXene films across length scales

Enhancing the energy stored and power delivered by layered materials relies strongly on improved understanding of the intricate interplay of electrolyte ions, solvents, and electrode interactions as well as the role of confinement. Here we report a highly integrated study with multiscale theory/modelling and experiments to track the intercalation of aqueous Li + , Na + , K + , Cs + , and Mg 2+ ions into Ti 3 C 2 MXene. The integrated analysis of experiments assisted by theory/modelling allows for a deep understanding of energy storage processes highlighting the importance of the dynamics of cations, their positionings between MXene sheets, their effects on mechanical properties and capacitive energy storage. Computational simulations and operando calorimetry measurements prove the processes involving cation dehydration and H+ rehydration, showing a good correlation for heat variations between experiments and theory. Operando liquid AFM mapped energy dissipation of ions appears non-uniformly across the MXene surface, indicating heterogeneities of ions inside the MXene and confirming partially the ion behaviour obtained in theory. We directly demonstrate that the average distance between the cation and MXene surface follows a modified two-sided Helmholtz model when plotted versus the open circuit potential capacitance, revealing a different electrical double layer mechanism in confinement. This new fundamental understanding lays the foundation for improved functional devices utilizing electrodes and membranes made of two-dimensional materials.

Achieving high volumetric EDLC carbons via hydrothermal carbonization and cyclic activation

A novel activation method involving hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) and a pressure-induced low temperature oxidation has been demonstrated for cellulose derived HTC char by using hydrogen peroxide as an active di-oxygen source. The optimized porosity versus gravimetric capacitance results from cellulose derived HTC char synthesized at 220 °C. Almost homogeneous and small particle size micro-ellipse/sphere, relatively high surface area and narrow pore size distributions lead to a high bulk density, i.e. 0.73 g cm -3 , of coating type electrodes, which is much denser than those manufactured from steam activated carbons for supercapacitor industry, i.e., 0.52 g cm -3 . The resulting carbon prepared herein achieves a relatively high volumetric capacitance in an organic electrolyte-based supercapacitor reaching a competitive value of industrial system with the features of environment friendly, cost-effective as well as high yield, and less energy consumption.

Selective hybridization between the main band and the superstructure band in the Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 + δ superconductor

High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi2212) and Bi 2 Sr 2–x La x CuO 6+δ (Bi2201) superconductors. Unexpected hybridization between the main band and the superstructure band in Bi2212 is clearly revealed. In the momentum space where one main Fermi surface intersects with one superstructure Fermi surface, four bands are observed instead of two. The hybridization exists in both the superconducting state and the normal state, and in Bi2212 samples with different doping levels. Such a hybridization is not observed in Bi2201. This phenomenon can be understood by considering the bilayer splitting in Bi2212, the selective hybridization of two bands with peculiar combinations, and the altered matrix element effects of the hybridized bands. These observations indicate that the origin of the superstructure bands is intrinsic to the CuO 2 planes. Furthermore, understanding physical properties and superconductivity in Bi2212 should consider the complete Fermi surface topology which involves the main bands, the superstructure bands, and their interactions.

A Cast Net Thrown onto an Interface: Wrapping 3D Objects with an Interfacially Jammed Amphiphilic Sheet

Wrapping a 3D object with a 2D sheet is not uncommon, but the wrapping behavior becomes complex and interesting when the sheet is bestowed with strong interfacial activities. Amphiphilic lignin macromolecules, isolated from biomass, form a scalable thin surfactant sheet at an oil/water interface through the interfacial jamming process. The process marks three distinct stages of interfacial behavior: a) diffusive assembly, b) viscous assembly with retarded mobility, and c) flexible yet irreversibly jammed rigid sheets. The surfactant sheet wraps, traps, and promptly stabilizes both oil and water droplets in nonequilibrium morphologies upon environmental stimulus. Finally, beyond preserving exotic morphologies, the highly interfacially active surfactant sheet also participates in morphology evolution by creating a vanishing interfacial tension and driving interfacial instability around the wrapped content, leading to novel morphologies as well as many potential applications.
