Satellite determination of nature and microstructure of atmospheric aerosols

A method is presented for the determination of aerosol physical parameters on the basis of scattered radiance measurements. The reconstruction of aerosol particle size distribution in the case of a spectral forward scattering method is considered, taking into account an inverse diffraction integral expression, a model cloud, the effect of lower wavenumber cut-off, the effect of higher wavenumber cut-off, the effect of spectral resolution, and the effects of multiple scattering and background noise. The determination of the aerosol complex refractive index with the aid of a minimization search method is also discussed.

Determination of atmospheric particle size distribution from forward scattering data.

Description of an analytic method of reconstructing the particle size distribution of atmospheric aerosols when no a priori information is available regarding the refractive index of the particles, the analytic form of the distribution, the size range, and the size extremal values. The method applies in principle to angle-dependent scattering data at a fixed wave number, or to wave-number-dependent scattering data at a fixed angle, or to a combination of the two. Some results of an angular scan study of the aureole are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the method. In conclusion, an analysis is made of the efficiency and accuracy of the method, the uniqueness of the inverse solutions, and the stability of the method relative to experimental noise.

Absorption profile of a planetary atmosphere - A proposal for a scattering independent determination.

The use of scattering theory to infer atmospheric optical parameters requires the separation of absorption and scattering. It is demonstrated that a gradient flux relation exists that would provide the absorption (altitude) profile independently of scattering and irrespective of the state of polarization of the light field. The relation is derived for an atmosphere of plane-parallel or spherical geometry and for broad (continuum) and narrow (spectral line) frequency bands. The results are shown to hold, in particular, for the polarizations induced by both Rayleigh and Mie scattering in the field. Experimental setups are proposed for each of the cases considered of atmospheric geometry and frequency bandwidth.

Interferometric spectropolarimetry - Alternate experimental methods.

Three alternate methods of obtaining spectra of the intensity and state of polarization of light are proposed. The methods make use of a two-beam amplitude division interferometer using the technique of Fourier spectroscopy. They do not require the presence of polarizers in the arms of the instrument. In one method a single analyzer is used in front of the detector with three successive orientations of its transmission axis azimuth. In another method, a (linear) polarizer assuming the same set of orientations is placed in the incident beam. A third method, a hybrid of the former two methods, makes use of both a polarizer and analyzer in the locations indicated. The first method permits the determination of all four Stokes parameters of polarization, whereas the other two methods cannot yield the ellipticity parameter. All methods require the recording of three interferograms. However, two interferograms can provide the intensity and degree of polarization in any of the methods described.

Jones's matrix representation of optical instruments. II - Fourier interferometers /spectrometers and spectropolarimeters/.

Our method of matrix synthesis of optical components and instruments is applied to the derivation of Jones's matrices appropriate for Fourier interferometers (spectrometers and spectropolarimeters). These matrices are obtained for both the source beam and the detector beam. In the course of synthesis, Jones's matrices of the various reflectors (plane mirrors; retroreflectors: roofed mirror, trihedral and prism cube corner, cat's eye) used by these interferometers are also obtained.

Interferometer for measurement of optical polarization

Standard two-beam interferometer with polarizers in each beam and an analyzer at the recombined focal point provides greater accuracy and higher resolution than any other known method for measuring variation of polarization within a spectral line and in the surrounding continuum.
