Prognostic analysis of high-flow nasal cannula therapy and non-invasive ventilation in mild to moderate hypoxemia patients and construction of a machine learning model for 48-h intubation prediction—a retrospective analysis of the MIMIC database

Background This study aims to investigate the clinical outcome between high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) and non-invasive ventilation (NIV) therapy in mild to moderate hypoxemic patients on the first ICU day and to develop a predictive model of 48-h intubation. Methods The study included adult patients from the MIMIC III and IV databases who first initiated HFNC or NIV therapy due to mild to moderate hypoxemia (100 < PaO2/FiO2 ≤ 300). The 48-h and 30-day intubation rates were compared using cross-sectional and survival analysis. Nine machine learning and six ensemble algorithms were deployed to construct the 48-h intubation predictive models, of which the optimal model was determined by its prediction accuracy. The top 10 risk and protective factors were identified using the Shapley interpretation algorithm. Result A total of 123,042 patients were screened, of which, 673 were from the MIMIC IV database for ventilation therapy comparison (HFNC n = 363, NIV n = 310) and 48-h intubation predictive model construction (training dataset n = 471, internal validation set n = 202) and 408 were from the MIMIC III database for external validation. The NIV group had a lower intubation rate (23.1% vs. 16.1%, p = 0.001), ICU 28-day mortality (18.5% vs. 11.6%, p = 0.014), and in-hospital mortality (19.6% vs. 11.9%, p = 0.007) compared to the HFNC group. Survival analysis showed that the total and 48-h intubation rates were not significantly different. The ensemble AdaBoost decision tree model (internal and external validation set AUROC 0.878, 0.726) had the best predictive accuracy performance. The model Shapley algorithm showed Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA), acute physiology scores (APSIII), the minimum and maximum lactate value as risk factors for early failure and age, the maximum PaCO 2 and PH value, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), the minimum PaO 2 /FiO 2 ratio, and PaO 2 value as protective factors. Conclusion NIV was associated with lower intubation rate and ICU 28-day and in-hospital mortality. Further survival analysis reinforced that the effect of NIV on the intubation rate might partly be attributed to the other impact factors. The ensemble AdaBoost decision tree model may assist clinicians in making clinical decisions, and early organ function support to improve patients’ SOFA, APSIII, GCS, PaCO 2 , PaO 2 , PH, PaO 2 /FiO 2 ratio, and lactate values can reduce the early failure rate and improve patient prognosis.

Community response of soil microorganisms to combined contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and potentially toxic elements in a typical coking plant

Both polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs) of coking industries impose negative effects on the stability of soil ecosystem. Soil microbes are regarded as an essential moderator of biochemical processes and soil remediation, while their responses to PAHs-PTEs combined contamination are largely unknown. In the present study, soil microbial diversity and community composition in the typical coking plant under the chronic co-exposure of PAHs and PTEs were investigated and microbial interaction networks were built to reveal microbial co-occurrence patterns. The results indicated that the concentrations of PAHs in the soil inside the coking plant were significantly higher than those outside the plant. The mean concentration of ∑16PAHs was 2894.4 ng·g −1 , which is 5.58 times higher than that outside the plant. The average Hg concentration inside the coking plant was 22 times higher than the background value of Hebei province. The soil fungal community inside the coking plant showed lower richness compared with that of outside community, and there are significant difference in the bacterial and fungal community composition between inside and outside of coking plant ( p < 0.01). Predicted contribution of different environmental factors to each dominant species based on random forest identified 20 and 25 biomarkers in bacteria and fungi, respectively, that were highly sensitive to coking plant soil in operation, such as Betaproteobacteria,Sordariomycetes and Dothideomycetes . Bacterial and fungal communities were shaped by the soil chemical properties (pH), PTEs (Hg), and PAHs together in the coking plant soils. Furthermore, the bacterial and fungal interaction patterns were investigated separately or jointly by intradomain and interdomain networks. Competition is the main strategy based on the co-exclusion pattern in fungal community, and the competitive relationship inside the coking plant is more complex than that outside the plant. In contrast, cooperation is the dominant strategy in bacterial networks based on the co-occurrence pattern. The present study provided insights into microbial response strategies and the interactions between bacteria and fungi under long-term combined contamination.

Light-Induced Dynamic Frequency Shifting of Microwave Photons in a Superconducting Electro-Optic Converter

Hybrid superconducting-photonic microresonators are a promising platform for realizing microwave-to-optical transduction. However, the absorption of scattered photons by the superconductors leads to unintended microwave resonance-frequency variation and line-width broadening. Here, we experimentally study the dynamics of this effect and its impact on microwave-to-optics conversion in an integrated lithium niobate–superconductor hybrid-resonator platform. Here, we unveil an adiabatic frequency shifting of the intracavity microwave photons induced by the fast photoresponses of the thin-film superconducting resonator. As a result, the temporal and spectral responses of electro-optics transduction are modified and well described by our theoretical model. This work provides insights into the light-induced conversion dynamics that must be considered in future designs of hybrid superconducting-photonic system.

Swinging Hydrogen Evolution to Nitrate Reduction Activity in Molybdenum Carbide by Ruthenium Doping

A common challenge for electrochemical ammonia synthesis in an aqueous phase is the consumption of Faradaic charge by the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), which reduces the Faradaic efficiency for the desired conversion, i.e., the nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 RR) to ammonium. This problem is particularly severe when a single-phase catalyst is operated at high current limits, thus a cocatalyst system that works synergistically for hydrogen acquisition and deoxygenation is needed to promote NO 3 RR over HER. For this study, we select a well-known HER catalyst Mo 2 C and investigate how metal doping can switch its kinetics from HER-dominated to NO 3 RR-dominated pathways. At 3.8 wt % Ru doping of Mo 2 C, a 75% single pass conversion of nitrate (0.1 M) to ammonium in a 16 cm 2 flow electrolyzer was achieved, corresponding to an ammonium yield rate of 9.07 mmol h –1 at a full cell voltage of 2 V. As confirmed by DFT calculations and kinetic isotope experiments, ruthenium dopants in the matrix serve as the sink point for adsorbed hydrogen during NO 3 RR to promote the cooperative deoxygenation of *NO 3 and *NO 2 on the Ru–Mo cocatalytic site. Our study suggests that optimizing hydrogen acquisition and deoxygenation reactions in cocatalytic systems is an effective strategy for electrochemical synthesis.

Er : Li Nb O 3 with High Optical Coherence Enabling Optical Thickness Control

Integrated photonics capable of incorporating rare-earth ions with high optical coherence is desirable for realizing efficient quantum transducers, compact quantum memories, and hybrid quantum systems. Here we describe a photonic platform based on the SmartCut erbium-doped lithium niobate thin film, and explore its stable optical transitions at telecom wavelength in a dilution refrigerator. Optical coherence time of up to 180μs, rivaling the value of bulk crystals, is achieved in optical ridge waveguides and ring resonators. With this integrated platform, we demonstrate tunable light-ion interaction and flexible control of optical thickness by exploiting long waveguides, whose lengths are in principle variable. This unique ability to obtain high optical density using low-concentration ions further leads to the observation of multiecho pulse trains in centimeter-long waveguides. Our results establish a promising photonic platform for quantum information processing with rare-earth ions.

An Integrated Multiscale Modeling Framework for Unconventional Stimulation and Production (Final Report)

The production of oil and gas from unconventional reservoirs largely depends upon two main features operating at different scales: (1) the establishment of a reservoir scale stimulated fracture network that effectively communicates with the rock volume, enhancing permeability and transport to the wellbore and (2) the coupled multi-phase flow, chemical and mechanical processes affecting the migration of hydrocarbons from the low permeability country rock adjacent to the stimulated fracture network. To date, there has been no simulation framework that allows seamless and integrated prediction of these features across spatial scales extending from the pore structure of the reservoir rock to the volume of the reservoir. In addition, there has been a lack of suitable field measurements to test such models, as stimulation and production data are often proprietary and not freely available to national laboratories and academic institutions. New multi-scale simulation capabilities are needed that are validated against suitable field-based research experiments on hydraulic fracturing and shale production.

Microwave-optical quantum frequency conversion

Photons at microwave and optical frequencies are principal carriers for quantum information. While microwave photons can be effectively controlled at the local circuit level, optical photons can propagate over long distances. High-fidelity conversion between microwave and optical photons will allow the distribution of quantum states across different quantum technology nodes and enhance the scalability of hybrid quantum systems toward a future “Quantum Internet.” Despite a frequency difference of five orders of magnitude, there has been significant progress recently toward the transfer between microwave and optical photons with steadily improved efficiency in a coherent and bidirectional manner. In this review, we summarize this progress, emphasizing integrated device approaches, and provide a perspective for device implementation that enables quantum state transfer and entanglement distribution across microwave and optical domains.

Bidirectional interconversion of microwave and light with thin-film lithium niobate

Abstract Superconducting cavity electro-optics presents a promising route to coherently convert microwave and optical photons and distribute quantum entanglement between superconducting circuits over long-distance. Strong Pockels nonlinearity and high-performance optical cavity are the prerequisites for high conversion efficiency. Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) offers these desired characteristics. Despite significant recent progresses, only unidirectional conversion with efficiencies on the order of 10 −5 has been realized. In this article, we demonstrate the bidirectional electro-optic conversion in TFLN-superconductor hybrid system, with conversion efficiency improved by more than three orders of magnitude. Our air-clad device architecture boosts the sustainable intracavity pump power at cryogenic temperatures by suppressing the prominent photorefractive effect that limits cryogenic performance of TFLN, and reaches an efficiency of 1.02% (internal efficiency of 15.2%). This work firmly establishes the TFLN-superconductor hybrid EO system as a highly competitive transduction platform for future quantum network applications.

BOREAS TE-4 Gas Exchange Data from Boreal Tree Species

The BOREAS TE-4 team collected steady-state gas exchange and reflectance data from several species in the BOREAS SSA during 1994 and in the NSA during 1996. Measurements of light, CO2, temperature, and humidity response curves were made by the BOREAS TE-4 team during the summers of 1994 and 1996 using intact attached leaves of boreal forest species located in the BOREAS SSA and NSA. These measurements were conducted to calibrate models used to predict photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and leaf respiration. The 1994 and 1996 data can be used to construct plots of response functions or for parameterizing models. Parameter values are suitable for application in SiB2 (Sellers et al., 1996) or the leaf model of Collatz et al. (1991), and programs can be obtained from the investigators. The data are stored in tabular ASCII files. The data files are available on a CD-ROM (see document number 20010000884), or from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC).
