The High Resolution Chandra X-Ray Spectrum of 3C273

The bright quasar 3C273 was observed by Chandra in January 2000 for 120 ksec as a calibration target. It was observed with all detector- plus-grating combinations (ACIS+HETG, ACIS+LETG, and HRC+LETG) yielding an X-ray spectrum across the entire 0.1-10 keV band with unprecedented spectral resolution. At about 10 arcsec from the nucleus, an X-ray jet is also clearly visible and resolved in the Oth order images. While the jet is much fainter than the nuclear source, the Chandra spatial resolution allows, for the first time, spectral analysis of both components separately. We will present detailed spectral analysis with particular emphasis on possible absorption features and comparison with simultaneous BeppoSAX data.

AXAF: Current Developments and Future Plans for the Scientific Data Analysis

AXAF, the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility, is one of NASA's great observatories scheduled for launch in January of 1999 by a Space Shuttle. This facility will be available to scientists in the United States and to the international astronomical community over an anticipated mission lifetime of at least 5 years. The objective of AXAF is to make astrophysical observations in the 0.09 to 10.0 keV energy range with two imaging detectors, and two sets of transmission gratings giving high spatial (0.5 arcsec) and spectral (E/(Delta)E=100-2000) resolution. The AXAF Science Center (ASC) in Cambridge, MA, USA is responsible for obtaining and reviewing observation proposals submitted by users, providing long range science planning and performing all science data calibration, data analysis, science instrument trend analysis, and science data archiving. The ASC will distribute science data products to the users. We will review here the current developments and future plans for the AXAF scientific data analysis system, its infrastructure and new key features, including the global modelling and fitting environment, integrated data analysis GUIs and new analysis tools.

The Variability and Spectrum of NGC 4051 from Deep, Simultaneous EUVE and XTE Observations

We present timing and spectral analysis of the data collected by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite (EUVE) for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4051 during 1996. NGC 4051 was observed twice in May 1996 and again in December 1996 for a total of more than 200 ksec. The observations were always simultaneous with hard X-ray observations conducted with the X-Ray Timing Explorer (XTE). The EUVE light curves are extremely variable during each observation, with the maximum variability during May 1996 when we registered changes by a factor of 21 over 8 hours and more than a factor of 24 variations from peak to minimum. We detected signal in the EUVE spectrograph in the 75-100 Arange which is well fitted by absorbed power law models. We will illustrate the results of our spectral and detailed power spectrum analysis for the simultaneous EUVE and XTE spectra and light curves and discuss the consequences on possible emission mechanisms.

Four Years of EUVE Observations of the Bursting Gamma-Ray Emitting Blazar Markarian 421

We present spectral and timing analysis of all the data collected by the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite (EUVE) for the bright, nearby BL Lacertae object, Markarian 421, during the four-year period 1994-1997. During these years Mrk 421 has been observed by EUVE 4 times with the Deep-Survey/Spectrograph and 2 times with the imaging telescopes for a total of approximately 1.4 7nillions seconds. From 1993 to 1996 three very bright gamma ray flares were also detected by the Whipple observatory. In 1994 Mrk 421 was observed simultaneously by EUVE (Apr 2-12) and IUE one month before the TeV flare; of the 2 EUVF, observations (Feb 4-7 and Apr 25-May 13) of 1995, the second was part of a multiwavelength campaign that mapped the evolution of the TeV flare. In 1996 we observed Mrk 421 twice simultaneously with XTE: one immediately before (Apr 17-30) and another one (May 10-11) right after the May 7 1996 TeV flare. And finally in 1997 from Feb. 7 to Feb. ll. The total light curve seems to be smoothly varying on the long time-scale while on a shorter time-scale there is evidence of an EUVE flare well correlated to the TeV energy 1995 flare. We have analysed the three spectral data set in an homogenous way using the appropriate calibration data for the off-axis observations and our analysis confirms the presence of the absorption features around approximately 70A, in the entire 1995 dataset and possibly in the 1996 data set. We also show the first power spectrum analysis of the Mrk 421 EUVE lightcurves and a comparison with the power spectra predicted by current theoretical models.

A volume-limited survey of High Galactic latitude planetary nebulae with the Extrme Ultraviolet Explorer

We present the results of a complete survey, at extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths (58-234 A), of the high Galactic latitude (absolute value of b greater than or = to 20 deg) planetary nebulae (PNs) with at least one determination of the distance within 1 kpc of the Sun. The sample comprises 27 objects observed during the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) all-sky survey and represents the majority of PN likely to be accessible at EUV wavelengths. Six PNs (NGC 246, NGC 1360, K1-16, LoTr 5, NGC 4361, and NGC 3587) were detected in the shortest EUV band (58-174 A). A seventh PN (NGC 6853), not included in the sample, was also detected during the survey. The emission is consistent in all cases with that of a point source and therefore most probably originates from the PN central star. Accurate EUV count rates or upper limits in the two shorter EUVE bands (centered at approximately 100 and 200 A) are given for all the sources in the sample. NGC 4361 and NGC 3587 are reported here for the first time as sources of EUV radiation. As might be expected, attenuation by the interstellar medium dominates the PN distribution in the EUV sky.

The MRK 421 Multi-Wavelength Campaign: EUVE Observation

We present the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectrum and light curve of the BL Lacertae object Markarian 421, obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE). The EUVE observation was part of a large multiwavelength campaign covering radio to gamma-ray energies. Preliminary analysis of the EUV spectrum indicates a smooth continuum in the 75-115 A range with no evidence of absorption features. The light curve shows variability of up to factors of two on a time-scale of a few days.

The distribution of neutral hydrogen in the interstellar medium. 1: The data

We compile, from the existing literature, the largest sample to date (842 data points) of hydrogen column density measurements, N(H I), of the gas in the interstellar medium. We include only results obtained from absorption measurements toward individual stars (594 in our sample) in an effort to construct a three-dimensional picture of the interstellar gas. We derive hydrogen column densities toward a fraction of the stars in the sample from published column density measurements of metal ions. A three-dimensional physical model derived from this data set will be presented in a companion paper. The observed stars span distances from a few parsecs to a few thousand parsecs, and more than half of the sample serves to describe the local interstellar medium within a few hundred parsecs of the Sun. Hydrogen column densities range from 10(exp 17) to 10(exp 22)/sq cm. We describe here the various observational methods used to estimate the hydrogen column densities and present the table with the stellar and hydrogen column density data. The provided table is intended as a global reference work, not to introduce new results.

Extreme ultraviolet spectroscopy of PKS 2155-304

We present the extreme ultraviolet (75-110 A) spectrum of the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304, the first spectrum of an extragalactic source obtained with the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE). The spectrum shows a generally smooth continuum, which can be modeled by a single power law plus interstellar absorption, and possibly an absorption feature at approximately 80 A. The best fit to the data suggests that the EUV spectrum can be interpreted as a simple extrapolation of the X-ray continuum, with an energy index alpha is approximately = 1.6; however, shallower or steeper power laws with indices between -0.4 and 2.7 cannot be ruled out by the existing EUV data alone. The data provide strong constraints on the interstellar neutral H and He along the line of sight. Using a column density of 1.36 x 10(exp 20)/sq cm for the Galactic neutral hydrogen along the PKS 2155-304 line of sight, the neutral helium column density is constrained to be 9%-10% of the hydrogen amount.

Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Bright Source List

Initial results from the analysis of the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) all-sky survey (58-740 A) and deep survey (67-364 A) are presented through the EUVE Bright Source List (BSL). The BSL contains 356 confirmed extreme ultraviolet (EUV) point sources with supporting information, including positions, observed EUV count rates, and the identification of possible optical counterparts. One-hundred twenty-six sources have been detected longward of 200 A.
