Pixel-Based Smoke Detection with Neural Network

Exposure to biomass burning has been linked to respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses in humans. Traditional satellite based visual and multispectral smoke detection methods are not scalable to capabilities of new generations of remote sensing platforms. We develop a scalable, deep learning based detection model capable of identifying smoke pixels using GOES-16 shortwave reflectance data and present a operational web-based tool to visualize smoke predictions.

Pixel-Based Model For High Latitude Dust Detection

Dust has implications on the energy budget, ocean biodiversity, and economy at regional and global scales. Dust detection relies on spectral sensitivity at visible (RGB) and infrared wavelengths. Radiative properties of high latitude dust and the background surface albedo in these regions (>40°N, >40°S) complicate current dust detection methods. Leveraging supervised machine learning (ML) methods, we propose a new method accounting for regional differences of dust occurrence.

Tethers can be embodied into NASA's future space station development both as an experimental facility and as a technology for systems enhancement. Early action should be taken to ensure that the basic tether system be baselined into the initial space station architecture and that further concept studies be arranged to embody this basic capability. Space station tethered satellite operations would be continuous, subject to need and occasional association with local spacecraft operations in the proximity of the space station. The use of the tether principles would be further explored for attitude control and/or attitude stabilization damping, and proximity operations. For new tether uses, action should be taken to look at the tether for holding storage uses, proximity operations, and for extension of the capabilities of attached payloads systems. These applications should emphasize dynamic off-vertical tethers, rapid deployment, active-steered tethers, tether-boom combinations, and other concepts.
