Vapor Degreasing Of A Large Tank

Vapor degreasing procedure provides for removal of relatively non-volatile oils and greases from insides of large vessels. Solvent refluxed to concentrate less volatile contaminants at bottom. Procedure ensures required degrees of cleaniness in high-purity chemical processing and high-vacuum processing vessels. Devised for cleaning complexly-shaped stainless-steel vacuum chamber containing numerous difficult-to-clean features like screw holes and abutting surfaces. Solvent can be chlorofluorocarbon, if means provided to recover most and minimize portion escaping into air. Alternatively, hydrocarbon or other flammable solvent used, provided flammability tolerable in particular application.

System Would Regulate Low Gas Pressure

System intended to maintain gases in containers at pressures near atmospheric. Includes ballast volume in form of underinflated balloon that communicates with working volume. Balloon housed in rigid chamber not subjected to extremes of temperature of working volume. Pressure in chamber surrounding balloon regulated at ambient atmospheric pressure or at constant small differential pressure above or below ambient. Expansion and contraction of balloon accommodates expansion or contraction of gas during operational heating or cooling in working volume, maintaining pressure in working volume at ambient or constant differential above or below ambient. Gas lost from system due to leakage or diffusion, low-pressure sensor responds, signaling valve actuators to supply more gas to working volume. If pressure rises too high, overpressure relief valve opens before excessive pressure damages system.

Curing A Large Composite Cylinder Without An Autoclave

Proposed technique provides application of heat and pressure to cure fiber-wound composite cylinder too large to fit in autoclave. Tube wound around cylinder applies pressure. Blanket distributes pressure. Pressure expels gas bubbles from material. Heat applied by conventional methods.

Enhancing Soundtracks From Old Movies

Proposed system enhances soundtracks of old movies. Signal on optical soundtrack of film digitized and processed to reduce noise and improve quality; timing signals added, and signal recorded on compact disk. Digital comparator and voltage-controlled oscillator synchronizes speed of film-drive motor and compact disk motor. Frame-coded detector reads binary frame-identifying marks on film. Digital comparator generates error signal if marks on film do not match those on compact disk.

Polarization-Rotating Sensors Connected To Optical Fibers

Proposed optoelectronic sensor system includes polarization-rotating sensing elements interrogated by polarized light transmitted to and from sensing elements along optical fibers. Polarization of light altered by combinations of inherent birefringence, stress-induced birefrigence, and Faraday rotation. Advantages include: light weight, fast response, immunity to electromagnetic interference at radio and lower frequencies, and no need to supply electrical power to sensing elements.

Solid-State Imaging Device With Carbon Film

Performance of solid-state imaging device enhanced by coating surface through which photons enter with thin film of carbon or diamondlike carbon. Film beneficial in two ways: acts as antireflection coat, and helps to dissipate undesired static electric charges that otherwise accumulate on surface.

Collectors Of Airborne And Spaceborne Particles

Brushlike collectors capture samples of dust and other particles in space vacuum or air for optical, scanning-electron-microscope, and/or x-ray analysis. Gently decelerates particles without damaging them, minimizing tendency of some particles to rebound. Depending on design of specific collector of this type, it captures particles ranging upward in size from fractions of micrometer to few micrometers.

Real-Time Keratometer

Optical/electronic keratometer system produces contour map of corneal surface illuminated by infrared light pulses. Prevents operator error and eliminates need to apply fluorescent liquids to cornea. Keratometer provides both video display and numerical recording for corneal-transplant and radial-keratotomy surgery and for contact-lens fitting. Optical system of keratometer, circular grating pattern transmitted to corneal surface reflected onto identical circular grating on surface of fiber plate, producing Moire pattern. Data-analysis-and-display mode, laser light pulsed, and Moire pattern converted to digital information in frame grabber. Digital picture information sent to computer for processing and display.

Compound Walls For Vacuum Chambers

Proposed compound-wall configuration enables construction of large high-vacuum chambers without having to use thick layers of expensive material to obtain necessary strength. Walls enclose chambers more than 1 m in diameter and several kilometers long. Compound wall made of strong outer layer of structural-steel culvert pipe welded to thin layer of high-quality, low-outgassing stainless steel.

Real-time analysis keratometer

A computer assisted keratometer in which a fiducial line pattern reticle illuminated by CW or pulsed laser light is projected on a corneal surface through lenses, a prismoidal beamsplitter quarterwave plate, and objective optics. The reticle surface is curved as a conjugate of an ideal corneal curvature. The fiducial image reflected from the cornea undergoes a polarization shift through the quarterwave plate and beamsplitter whereby the projected and reflected beams are separated and directed orthogonally. The reflected beam fiducial pattern forms a moire pattern with a replica of the first recticle. This moire pattern contains transverse aberration due to differences in curvature between the cornea and the ideal corneal curvature. The moire pattern is analyzed in real time by computer which displays either the CW moire pattern or a pulsed mode analysis of the transverse aberration of the cornea under observation, in real time. With the eye focused on a plurality of fixation points in succession, a survey of the entire corneal topography is made and a contour map or three dimensional plot of the cornea can be made as a computer readout in addition to corneal radius and refractive power analysis.

Intracranial surgical operative apparatus

Apparatus for operating on the brain with minimal disturbances thereto, including a bullet-shaped expandable device with an end that can be closed for insertion through a small hole in the brain. The device can be expanded after insertion to leave an air pocket through which to extend viewing and cutting devices which enable operation on tumors or the like that lie at the end of the expanded device. A set of probes of varying diameters are also provided, to progressively enlarge a passage leading to the tumor, prior to inserting the expandable device.

Strong thin membrane structure for use as solar sail comprising substrate with reflective coating on one surface and an infra red emissivity increasing coating on the other surface

Production of strong lightweight membrane structure by applying a thin reflective coating such as aluminum to a rotating cylinder, applying a mesh material such as nylon over the aluminum coating, coating the mesh overlying the aluminum with a polymerizing material such as a para-xylylene monomer gas to polymerize as a film bound to the mesh and the aluminum, and applying an emissivity increasing material such as chromium and silicon monoxide to the polymer film to disperse such material colloidally into the growing polymer film, or applying such material to the final polymer film, and removing the resulting membrane structure from the cylinder. Alternatively, such membrane structure can be formed by etching a substrate in the form of an organic film such as a polyimide, or a metal foil, to remove material from the substrate and reduce its thickness, applying a thin reflective coating such as aluminum on one side of the substrate and applying an emissivity increasing coating such as chromium and silicon monoxide on the reverse side of the substrate.
