Photo-Optical Blade-Vibration-Data Acquisition System

Techniques developed for measuring blade vibrations using optical sensors fixed in casing around bladed turbine-engine stage. Measurement system coordinates and assembles inputs of many optical probes in order to monitor all of blades on spinning stage. Several points on every blade monitored in order to develop quantitative measure of overall bladed-stage response.

Turbomachinery incipient failure dynamic detection indicators and analysis

Tape recorded signals from case-mounted accelerometers are examined to determine the feasibility of detecting spalls on bearing balls in the liquid oxygen (LOX) pump in the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME). The nonperiodic nature of the spall impact on inner and outer bearing races caused traditional techniques to be unsuccessful. A technique involving statistical techniques and spectra ratios was used to review available pump test tapes.

Turbojet blade vibration data acquisition design and feasibility testing

A turbojet blade vibration data acquisition system was designed to allow the measurement of blade vibration. The data acquisition system utilizing 96 microprocessors to gather data from optical probes, store, sort and transmit to the central computer is described. Areas of high technical risk were identified and a two-microprocessor system was breadboarded and tested to investigate these areas. Results show that the system was feasible and that low technical risk would be involved in proceeding with the complete system fabrication.

Design and test of a pump failure anticipator

Tests were conducted on two different types of pumps in order to refine the concept and to finalize design details of a positive displacement internal gear pump and a shroudless centrifugal pump. A concept and a system that could be used with pumps to allow a rapid judgement to be made of the suitability of the pump for futher service is developed. Test results and detailed data analysis are included.

Investigations of a bearing fault detector for railroad bearings

The laboratory tests are described which were conducted on new and damaged bearings to determine the feasibility of using high-frequency vibration as a diagnostic tool. A high-frequency band pass filter and demodulator was assembled to permit field measurements of the high-frequency vibrations. Field tests were conducted on an actual truck and on an axle assembly run in a grease test rig. These field tests were directed toward demonstration of the suitability and capabilities of the high-frequency technique for field application. Two specific areas of field application were identified as being cost effective for railroad use. One area is the examination of railroad roller bearings at a derailment site, and the second is as a wayside detector to supplement present hot box detectors for defective roller bearings.

New detection method for rolling element and bearing defects

Instrument for detecting defects in rolling elements of bearings is described. Detection depends on rate at which rolling elements impact defect and establishes envelope amplitude of ball resonant frequency. Block diagram of instrument is provided and results obtained in conducting tests are reported.
