JACEE long duration balloon flights

JACEE balloon-borne emulsion chamber detectors are used to observe the spectra and interactions of cosmic ray protons and nuclei in the energy range 1 to 100A TeV. Experience with long duration mid-latitude balloon flights and characteristics of the detector system that make it ideal for planned Antarctic balloon flights are discussed.

Characteristics of central collision events in Fe-nucleus interactions for 20 - 60 GeV/nucleon

A counter emulsion hybrid chamber in Japanese-American Cooperative Emulsion Experiment (JACEE-3) was flown on a balloon at the altitude (5.4 g/sq cm) in 1982 with the objective of probing the heavy nuclear collisions above 20 GeV per nucleon. In the energy region, it is suggested that nucleus-nucleus collisions provide dense collisions complex through compression and secondary particle production. In the lower energy region, an evidence of collective flow has been reported. And also, at higher energy region, it has been argued that nucleus has rather large stopping power. In this paper, the high multiplicity characteristics of Fe nucleus central collisions with energies 20 to 50 GeV/nucleon are presented. This is considered to be relevant to compressibility and collective flow of nuclear matter.

Results on ultra-relativistic nucleus-nucleus interactions from balloon-borne emulsion chambers

The results of balloon-borne emulsion-chamber measurements on high-energy cosmic-ray nuclei (Burnett et al., 1983) are summarized in tables and graphs and briefly characterized. Special consideration is given to seven nucleus-nucleus interaction events at energy in excess of 1 TeV/A with multiplicity greater than 400, and to Fe interactions (53 with CHO, 10 with emulsion, and 14 with Pb) at 20-60 GeV/A.

Measurement of heavy cosmic rays above 20 GeV/n in passive detectors - Preliminary results from JACEE-3

It is pointed out that the JACEE-3 experiment combined electronic counters and an emulsion chamber to study nucleus-nucleus interactions between 20 and 100 GeV/n. In the present paper, a description is given of the use of the passive detector stack. The electronic position detectors facilitate the event location, taking into account a determination of the incident angles. CR-39 plastic plates were placed just below the proportional counters to enhance tracking accuracy. The JACEE-3 emulsion chamber consists of three parts, including the charge module, the target module, and the calorimeter module. The charge module is mainly used in track identification. The obtained results are also discussed, giving attention to event number and tracking efficiency, interaction measurements, and the inelasticity distribution.

Q-switched, cavity-dumped, mode-locked laser

Continuous-wave laser can achieve higher rate of emission through Q-switching. Technique keeps Q, energy storage rating, of laser cavity at low value while ion population inversion is being built up. Then Q is suddenly switched to high value just before instability occurs.
