Interstellar Propulsion Concepts Assessment

NASA is investigating the feasibility of conducting extra-solar and interstellar missions over the next 10 to 50 years. An assessment of technologies supporting these near and far term objectives is required. To help meet these objectives the Principal Investigator assessed the feasibility of candidate propulsion systems for the proposed 'Interstellar Probe', a mission to send a spacecraft to the Heliopause at 250 AU and beyond.

Apparent Endless Extraction of Energy from the Vacuum by Cyclic Manipulation of Casimir Cavity Dimensions

In 1983, Ambjorn and Wolfram produced plots of the energy density of the quantum mechanical electromagnetic fluctuations in a volume of vacuum bounded by perfectly conducting walls in the shape of a rectangular cavity of dimensions a(1), a(2), and a(3), as a function of the ratios a(2)/a(1) and a(3)/a(1). Portions of these plots are double-valued, in that they allow rectangular cavities with the same, value of a(2)/a(1), but different values of a(3)/a(1), to have the saint total energy. Using these double-valued regions of the plots, I show that it is possible to define a "Casimir Vacuum Energy Extraction Cycle" which apparently would allow for the endless extraction of energy from the vacuum in the Casimir cavity by cyclic manipulation of the Casimir cavity dimensions.

Observational Search for Negative Matter in Intergalactic Voids

Negative matter is a hypothetical form of matter with negative rest mass, inertial mass, and gravitational mass. It is not antimatter. If negative matter could be collected in macroscopic amounts, its negative inertial property could be used to make an continuously operating propulsion system which requires neither energy nor reaction mass, yet still violates no laws of physics. Negative matter has never been observed, but its existence is not forbidden by the laws of physics. We propose that NASA support an extension to an ongoing astrophysical observational effort by da Costa, et al. (1996) which could possibly determine whether or not negative matter exists in the well-documented but little-understood intergalactic voids.

The cable catapult - Putting it there and keeping it there

The cable catapult is the previously proposed method of using long space tethers for high speed interplanetary transport. A long conductive multistrand cable would be connected to a power supply and pointed in the desired direction. A linear motor would pull itself along the powered cable strands and launch a payload capsule toward a distant planet, where it would be caught and decelerated by another cable catapult positioned there. In this paper it is shown how cable catapults can be used to transport themselves to a distant planet and keep themselves in position near the planet despite the tendency of the payload capsule momentum transfer to push them apart.
