Shuttle demonstration of large space structure fabrication and assembly

This paper describes a program aimed at the early on-orbit demonstration of a large-space-structure fabrication and assembly capability. Requirements for the demonstration concept have been formulated. The concept selected to meet these requirements is a Large Space Structure Platform consisting of a triangular prism of 31.5 m length. Sensors can be mounted on this platform to perform earth-observation measurements from space. Structural elements of the platform are fabricated using an automated beam builder in the Shuttle Orbiter payload bay. Special fixtures are designed to assemble the structure with the aid of the remote manipulator system and two astroworkers in an EVA mode. Results of the platform preliminary design are presented in terms of a design layout with related structural, thermal, mass-properties, and control-dynamics data. The assembly scenario is described. Estimates of the total construction time and Orbiter support requirements are also presented.

A space-based public service platform for terrestrial rescue operations

The space-based Public Service Platform (PSP) is a multibeam, high-gain communications relay satellite that can provide a variety of functions for a large number of people on earth equipped with extremely small, very low cost transceivers. This paper describes the PSP concept, the rationale used to derive the concept, the criteria for selecting specific communication functions to be performed, and the advantages of performing such functions via satellite. The discussion focuses on the benefits of using a PSP for natural disaster warning; control of attendant rescue/assistance operations; and rescue of people in downed aircraft, aboard sinking ships, lost or injured on land.

Survey of space flight safety systems.

Preventive and remedial conceptual approaches may be employed to enhance the safety of space flight operations. The preventive approach makes use of components of high reliability and the incorporation of redundancy in crew safety-related functions. According to the second conceptual approach the means are to be provided to cope with accidents when they arise. The remedial means include onboard systems, pre-positioned aids, and earth-launched systems. Reports or papers dealing with rescue and survival systems of various types are considered, and a summary of the results of space escape, rescue, and survivability investigations is presented.

Survey of space escape/rescue/survivability capabilities.

Discussion of preventive or remedial systems to achieve safer space flight operations. Escape, rescue, and survival systems are defined by categories: on board, prepositioned aid, and earth-launched concepts. The survey considers separable escape or survival capsules; standby escape or rescue systems; and earth-launched manned and unmanned rescue systems. Reports covering such systems are listed, and the contents are classified as to scope of investigation, space mission, and design approach. Mission classes considered are earth orbit, lunar, and interplanetary. Results of the space escape, rescue, and survivability investigations are summarized in terms of system features and performance, including apparent voids or limitations in rescue capability. Recovery requirements and resources for space rescue are discussed.
