Investigation of the diffuse ultraviolet background using satellite data: Dynamics explorer guest investigator program

The imaging instrumentation for the Dynamics Explorer Mission was designed primarily to obtain global auroral images. The instrument, however, was also used successfully to study marine bioluminescence, the geocorona, and the global distribution of atmospheric ozone. The imager has considerable potential for the study of astronomical sources of ultraviolet radiation as well. The data produced by the imager is used to study the brightness and isotrophy of the diffuse ultraviolet background.

Polarimetry of Pluto.

Pluto has been observed at a solar phase of 0.8 deg and found to have a degree of polarization of 0.27 percent (probable error 0.02 percent) and a position angle of polarization of 156 deg (probable error 2 deg). The observations indicate that Pluto has a polarization curve with a deep negative branch and, therefore, that its surface is likely to be microscopically rough. The observed polarization is compatible with the small geometric albedo of Pluto. No convincing evidence of variable polarization associated with Pluto's rotation has been found.

An analysis of the light curve of Pluto.

The light curve of Pluto is analyzed in terms of a geometrical model consisting of bright and dark areas which are assumed to exhibit either a diffuse or a geometrical type of reflectivity. A Fourier analysis method is used to invert the observed light curve to obtain the longitudinal distribution of bright and dark areas for any combination of albedos selected for the two types of terrain. The analysis indicates that the light curve of Pluto can be readily understood in terms of a surface consisting of bright and dark areas. However, on the basis of the presently available photometric data, the existence or absence of limb-darkened material cannot be established.
