Sonic boom analysis for high altitude flight at high Mach number

Numerical programs are presented which take into account the nonlinear effects of high Mach number, the entropy change across the shock, the entropy and enthalpy variations in the atmospheric layer and the gravitational effect. Extension of the programs for the axisymmetric problems to handle nonaxisymmetric terms is described. The asymmetry can be caused by the geometry of the body, the lift and also the fact that the variations in the atmospheric layer are two-dimensional. Numerical results demonstrating the influences of these effects and comparison with existing approximate theories are presented.

Reduction of NO formations by premixing

The effects of exhaust gases from supersonic transport aircraft on the equilibrium of the stratosphere are discussed. A method for reducing the amount of nitrogen oxides generated by the engines of supersonic transports is describes. The engine requirements for the turbojet engines of the supersonic transport aircraft are defined. The design of combustion chambers to provide premixed flames and the thermodynamic properties of premixed flames are analyzed. Charts are developed to show the isotherms of the ignited mixtures for various conditions and the mass fraction of nitrogen oxide along selected streamlines.

Mixing-controlled supersonic combustion.

The technology of supersonic combustion and its practical significance for hypersonic flight are reviewed. It is shown that this technology makes possible a good qualitative and quantitative understanding of the physical phenomena related to the process of supersonic combustion. Some of the more important, summarized aspects of this technology include the physical description of the supersonic combustion flame, the chemical reaction rates and the diffusion process involved, the interaction between combustion and fluid dynamics, and the mathematical methods of supersonic combustion analysis.

Analysis and design of three dimensional supersonic nozzles. Volume 3: A design technique for multiple nozzle configurations

An iteration procedure for optimum nozzle design with application to hypersonic aircraft is discussed. In the procedure, intial values of several of the design parameters are assumed from simplified approximate considerations and are then varied systematically in order to determine the value of each parameter which optimizes nozzle performance. Improvements in nozzle performance are obtained by perturbing the initially assumed values of the geometric parameters on the basis of a computer analysis.

Experimental verification of low sonic boom configuration

A configuration designed to produce near field signature has been tested at M = 2.71 and the results are analyzed, by taking in account three-dimensional and second order effects. The configuration has an equivalent total area distribution that corresponds to an airplane flying at 60,000 ft. having a weight of 460,000 lbs, and 300 ft. length. A maximum overpressure of 0.95 lb/square foot has been obtained experimentally. The experimental results agree well with the analysis. The investigation indicates that the three-dimensional effects are very important when the measurements in wind tunnels are taken at small distances from the airplane.

Sonic boom generation propagation and minimization.

Consideration of the possibility of reducing sonic boom noise to a level acceptable in populated areas. A detailed study is made of the possibility of predicting sonic boom generation, taking into account the effect of atmospheric conditions, air turbulence, and the effect of the shape and condition of the ground where people are located. The relation between the shape of the sonic boom signature on the ground and the aircraft shape is shown to be an important factor governing the use of supersonic aircraft over populated areas.

Sonic boom generation propagation and minimization.

Factors influencing the generation and propagation of sonic boom are discussed, covering predictions of sonic boom levels, effects of atmospheric conditions, and effects of ground characteristics. Also discussed are experimental techniques for sonic boom studies, and approaches to the reduction of sonic boom signatures.

Integrated turbine-compressor provides air flow for cooling

Modified supersonic turbine cycle provides cooling air to surrounding structures. Simplified mechanical design assures correct balance of air flow, allows direct issue of cool air to the structure, and assists in matching turbine work output to work input required by the compressor.
