Linear Motor With Air Slide

Improved linear actuator comprises air slide and linear electric motor. Unit exhibits low friction, low backlash, and more nearly even acceleration. Used in machinery in which positions, velocities, and accelerations must be carefully controlled and/or vibrations must be suppressed.

Six-Degree-Of-Freedom Magnetic Vibration Isolator

Feedback control provides soft mount and damping of vibrations. Active magnetic suspension system centers inner structure in position and orientation with respect to principal Cartesian coordinate axes of base or outer structure, stationary with respect to building or vehicle. System helps to isolate suspended mass from vibrations of building or vehicle. Designed to isolate 500-kg experimental apparatus from vibrations of spacecraft, but also used on Earth, provided that its z axis vertical and system assisted by low-stiffness vertical spring that, in steady state, holds up inner structure at nominal vertical position.

Development of magnetostrictive active members for control of space structures

The goal of this Phase 2 Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) project was to determine the technical feasibility of developing magnetostrictive active members for use as truss elements in space structures. Active members control elastic vibrations of truss-based space structures and integrate the functions of truss structure element, actively controlled actuator, and sensor. The active members must control structural motion to the sub-micron level and, for many proposed space applications, work at cryogenic temperatures. Under this program both room temperature and cryogenic temperature magnetostrictive active members were designed, fabricated, and tested. The results of these performance tests indicated that room temperature magnetostrictive actuators feature higher strain, stiffness, and force capability with lower amplifier requirements than similarly sized piezoelectric or electrostrictive active members, at the cost of higher mass. Two different cryogenic temperature magnetostrictive materials were tested at liquid nitrogen temperatures, both with larger strain capability than the room temperature magnetostrictive materials. The cryogenic active member development included the design and fabrication of a cryostat that allows operation of the cryogenic active member in a space structure testbed.

A six degree-of-freedom Lorentz vibration isolator with nonlinear controller

The results of a phase 2 Small Business Innovation Research Program sponsored by MSFC are presented. Technology is developed for isolating acceleration sensitive microgravity experiments from structural vibration of a spacecraft, such as a space station. Two hardware articles are constructed: a six degree of freedom Lorentz force isolation and a one degree of freedom low acceleration testbed capable of tests at typical experiment accelerations.
