Quantum mechanical features of optically pumped CW FIR lasers

Quantum mechanical predictions for the gain of an optically pumped CW FIR laser are presented for cases in which one or both of the pump and FIR transitions are pressure or Doppler broadened. The results are compared to those based on the rate equation model. Some of the quantum mechanical predictions are verified in CH3OH.

Selective reabsorption leading to multiple oscillations in the 8446-A atomic-oxygen laser.

Laser oscillation of atomic oxygen at 8446 A occurs in four closely spaced lines with peculiar intensity ratios, all detuned from the atomic center frequencies of the three fine-structure transitions. These anomalies are caused by the selective reabsorption of resonance radiation from the lower laser level by ground-state oxygen atoms. The selectivity results from the fact that the velocity distribution of the laser levels is considerably wider than that of the ground state, because of the dissociative mode of production of excited oxygen atoms. Possible extension of this mechanism to the atomic-hydrogen system is discussed.

Interactions among multiple lines in the 8446-A atomic-oxygen laser.

The atomic-oxygen laser oscillates at four closely spaced frequencies on the gain profile of the 8446-A fine-structure transitions. A set of experiments is reported which studies the competition among these four lines by suppressing one of them. The results are explained on the basis of the interaction of laser lines oscillating on Doppler-broadened transitions sharing a common lower level.

New laser technique for the identification of molecular transitions.

A laser technique is proposed which may be useful for the assignment of molecular spectra in the visible and infrared regions. The method is based on the resonant interaction of two monochromatic fields with a Doppler-broadened three-level system. Under the appropriate conditions the absorption line shape of one of the transitions shows a complex structure over a narrow section of the Doppler profile, and for sufficiently high laser power the line shape splits into a number of narrow peaks. Analysis of the resulting intensity pattern leads to unambiguous assignment of the angular momentum quantum numbers of the three levels involved. A simple set of rules is given to facilitate interpretation of spectra. The line shapes discussed are also relevant to monochromatic optical pumping of gases and unidirectional laser amplifiers.

Laser oscillation and anisotropic gain in the 1 to 0 vibrational band of optically pumped HF gas.

P-branch laser oscillations have been observed in the v = 1 to v = 0 band of HF gas, optically pumped by R-branch lines of a pulsed HF laser. The observed gains are large (greater than 10% per cm), and the conversion efficiencies are high. In a ring cavity, the system shows directional gain anisotropy characteristic of unidirectional laser amplifiers proposed recently.

Anisotropic ultrahigh gain emission observed in rotational transitions in optically pumped HF gas.

Gain and laser oscillations are obtained on rotational transitions of the first excited vibrational state of HF gas at room temperature, resonantly pumped by the 2.7-micron lines of a pulsed HF laser. Pumping the P-branch transitions connecting the ground and first excited vibrational states produces gain at the coupled rotational transitions at 36, 42, 51, 63, 84, and 126 microns. The gain exhibits directional properties characteristic of a unidirectional amplifier predicted by a recent theory. The incremental gains of these lines are very large, in excess of 1/cm, and the lines oscillate easily without mirrors (superradiance).

Hyperfine structure of excited states and quadrupole moment of Ne-21 using laser-induced line-narrowing techniques.

Observation results are presented on the optical hyperfine structure in Ne-21 obtained with the aid of laser-induced line-narrowing techniques. The output from a long stabilized single-mode 1.15-micron He-Ne laser focused into an external sample cell containing Ne-21 was used in implementing these techniques. Their applicability is demonstrated for optical hyperfine structure observation in systems whose features are ordinarily masked by Doppler broadening.

Laser-induced line-narrowing effects in coupled Doppler-broadened transitions. II - Standing-wave features.

Previous theoretical results on the influence of a laser on the line shape of a coupled transition (laser-induced line narrowing) have been restricted to the case where the laser is detuned from the center of its atomic gain profile or is in the form of a traveling wave. The present paper extends these results to the case where the laser is an intense standing-wave field tunable to the center of its atomic gain profile (conditions for Lamb dip). A theoretical solution of the problem is developed, and a detailed discussion of line shapes and physical processes involved is included.
