Strength measurement of the $E^{lab}_α = 830$ keV resonance in the 22 Ne (α,n) 25 Mg reaction using a stilbene detector

The interplay between the 22 Ne (α,γ) 26 Mg reaction and the competing 22 Ne ⁢(α,n) 25 Mg reaction determines the efficiency of the latter as a neutron source at the temperatures of stellar helium burning. In both cases, the rates are dominated by the α-cluster resonance at 830 keV. This resonance plays a particularly important role in determining the strength of the neutron flux for both the weak and main s process as well as the n process. Recent experimental studies based on transfer reactions suggest that the neutron and γ-ray strengths for this resonance are approximately equal. In this study, the 22 Ne (α,n) 25 Mg resonance strength has been remeasured and found to be similar to the previous direct studies. Finally, this reinforces an 830 keV resonance strength that is approximately a factor of 3 larger for the 22 Ne ⁢(α,n) 25 Mg reaction than for the 22 Ne (α,γ) 26 Mg reaction.

Measurement of the 13 C(α, n 0 ) 16 O Differential Cross Section from 0.8 to 6.5 MeV

The cross section of the 13 C(α, n 0 ) 16 O reaction is needed for nuclear astrophysics and applications to a precision of 10% or better, yet inconsistencies among 50 years of experimental studies currently lead to an uncertainty of ≈15%. Here, using a state-of-the-art neutron detection array, we have performed a high resolution differential cross section study covering a broad energy range. These measurements result in a dramatic improvement in the extrapolation of the cross section to stellar energies potentially reducing the uncertainty to ≈5% and resolving long standing discrepancies in higher energy data.

Measurement of Electron-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on 127 I with the COHERENT NaI$ν$E Detector

Using an 185-kg NaI[Tl] array, COHERENT has measured the inclusive electron-neutrino chargedcurrent cross section on 127 I with pion decay-at-rest neutrinos produced by the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Iodine is one the heaviest targets for which low-energy (≤ 50 MeV) inelastic neutrino-nucleus processes have been measured, and this is the first measurement of its inclusive cross section. After a five-year detector exposure, COHERENT reports a flux-averaged cross section for electron neutrinos of ${9.2}_{–1.8}^{+2.1}$ × 10 –40 cm 2 . This corresponds to a value that is ~41% lower than predicted using the MARLEY event generator with a measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution. In addition, the observed visible spectrum from charged-current scattering on 127 I has been measured between 10 and 55 MeV, and the exclusive zero-neutron and one-or-more-neutron emission cross sections are measured to be ${5.2}_{–3.1}^{+3.4}$ × 10 –40 and ${2.2}_{—2.2}^{+3.5}$ × 10 –40 cm 2 , respectively.

Manufacturing and characterization of a boron-loaded fast-cured plastic organic scintillator

A novel fast-cured, boron-loaded, plastic organic scintillator was developed and characterized. A diisopropylnaphthalene-containing scintillator was manufactured in minutes with the addition of two commercially available fast-curing monomers, isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) and 1,6-Hexanediol dimethacrylate (HDDMA). Further, the light yield of the device was measured to be approximately 70% relative to a similarly sized, but several-year-aged, EJ-276 detector. Using a coincidence capture technique, the neutron capture light output was found to be 87.7 ± 4.2 keVee, which was 1.47 ± 0.07 greater than the light output from a 59.5 keV electron. Producing a viable fast-cured and thermal-neutron-sensitive detector enables the capability to pursue cost-effective 3D printed thermal neutron detectors in a timely manner.

Determination of particle-dependent light response for defining detector response functions

This study comprehensively characterizes two scintillation detectors, an organic deuterated liquid and a stilbene crystal, concerning their response to charged particles such as electrons, protons, alphas, and carbon nuclei. The Birks function was used to determine the detectors’ response to charged particles, enabling the determination of particle-dependent light responses. The particle-dependent light characterization was used to determine detector response functions (DRF) using Geant in combination with Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software (GADRAS). These DRFs enhance GADRAS by enabling full spectral analysis functionality for previously underrepresented detector materials. Additionally, neutron-specific DRFs are determined for neutron energy spectrum unfolding applications.

Distributed phase sensing using two-mode squeezed states in a truncated SU(1,1) interferometer

We demonstrate distributed phase sensing with a truncated SU(1,1) interferometer through the measurement of a linear combination of two phases distributed between the two beams of a two-mode squeezed state. We theoretically analyze the sensitivity enhancement with respect to the corresponding classical strategy and experimentally demonstrate a 2 dB quantum noise reduction in the measurement of a linear combination of two phases.
