Special report, exit slit mirrors for the Ebert spectrometer

The use of a very long straight entrance slit in an Ebert grating spectrometer with two plane mirrors at the shorter exit slit to increase the energy density is described. This system has been employed in a far ultraviolet rocket spectrometer to provide higher sensitivity than has been achieved previously. The imaging properties and required slit and mirror adjustments are presented. Experimental results are included.

Special report, diffuse reflectivity of the lunar surface

The far ultraviolet diffuse reflectivity of samples of lunar dust material is determined. Equipment for measuring the diffuse reflectivity of materials (e.g. paint samples) is already in existence and requires only minor modification for the proposed experiment which will include the measurement of the polarizing properties of the lunar samples. Measurements can be made as a function of both illumination angle and angle of observation.

Calibration facility safety plan

A set of requirements is presented to insure the highest practical standard of safety for the Apollo 17 Calibration Facility in terms of identifying all critical or catastrophic type hazard areas. Plans for either counteracting or eliminating these areas are presented. All functional operations in calibrating the ultraviolet spectrometer and the testing of its components are described.

Scientific data reduction and analysis plan: PI services

This plan comprises two parts. The first concerns the real-time data display to be provided by MSC during the mission. The prime goal is to assess the operation of the UVS and to identify any problem areas that could be corrected during the mission. It is desirable to identify any possible observations of unusual scientific interest in order to repeat these observations at a later point in the mission, or to modify the time line with respect to the operating modes of the UVS. The second part of the plan discusses the more extensive postflight analysis of the data in terms of the scientific objectives of this experiment.

Rocket flight performance of a preprototype Apollo 17 UV spectrometer S-169

The design, construction, testing, calibration, flight performance and flight data of an Ebert ultraviolet spectrometer are described which is an accurate representation of the conceptual design of the Apollo 17 UV spectrometer. The instrument was flown in an Aerobee 350 rocket from Wallops Island, Va., at 7:10 p.m. EDT on June 10, 1971 to an altitude of 328 km with a solar elevation angle of about 11 deg.

Interface definition for the Far Ultraviolet Spectrometer Experiment S169

A final contract for development, fabrication, test and flight of the ultraviolet spectrometer experiment on an Apollo space mission is reported. Two interface control documents were completed and signed off and three more were essentially completed. Supporting preliminary concepts formulation, design study and component investigation, specification and subcontract negotiation were accomplished.
