Space power distribution system technology. Volume 1: Reference EPS design

The multihundred kilowatt electrical power aspects of a mannable space platform in low Earth orbit is analyzed from a cost and technology viewpoint. At the projected orbital altitudes, Shuttle launch and servicing are technically and economically viable. Power generation is specified as photovoltaic consistent with projected planning. The cost models and trades are based upon a zero interest rate (the government taxes concurrently as required), constant dollars (1980), and costs derived in the first half of 1980. Space platform utilization of up to 30 years is evaluated to fully understand the impact of resupply and replacement as satellite missions are extended. Such lifetimes are potentially realizable with Shuttle servicing capability and are economically desirable.

Power processing system for a 200 watt communication satellite transmitter

A power processing system (PPS) for a communication satellite, high power (200W RF) multi-stage depressed collector, 12 GHz, traveling wave tube, is described. The PPS converts spacecraft bus power at a nominal voltage of 76 Vdc to the levels necessary for operating a ten-collector coupled cavity TWT requiring approximately 500 watts of input power. Regulated voltages of up to -11.3K Vdc are provided along with command, protection and telemetry signal conditioning circuits. Power processor interface requirements are set forth and a block diagram illustrating the basic approach utilized is presented. Overall performance, design characteristics and unique features are discussed. Thermal and mechanical interface requirements impacting on PPS design are described as well as the thermal control technique utilized for the overall PPS/TWT assembly.

A high power TWT power processing system

A power processing system (PPS) is designed for a space-type high power (200W RF) multi-collector traveling-wave tube (TWT). The basic power circuit is presented along with the simplified block diagram and the input, output, and general requirements for the PPS design are tabulated. The paper covers the PPS design as to critical TWT/PPS interface requirements, high voltage cathode/collector supply, high voltage components material, packaging, grounding and isolation, and electrical performance. The use of a single two loop control system for the regulation of cathode and collector voltages is shown to give high efficiency, excellent steady-state and transient performance characteristics, and complete protection for TWT and PPS components under transient conditions.
