A Medium-/Low-Voltage Joint State Estimator Through Linear Uncertainty Propagation

Traditionally, distribution system state estimations (DSSE) are challenged by the lack of measurements at both primary and secondary sides of the system. The widely available cable television (CATV) voltage sensors installed in low-voltage (LV) networks bring opportunities to achieve higher quality DSSE covering a broader area of the distribution network. This study proposes a medium-/low-voltage (MV/LV) joint distribution system state estimation approach using the untapped CATV measurements. It aims at addressing the need for system situational awareness at the grid edge while improving the estimation accuracy at both the primary and secondary sides compared to its disjointed counterpart. Linearized measurement functions and boundary condition uncertainty propagation rules are derived to ensure the computational efficiency and accuracy of the joint state estimator. Numerical experiments are conducted on an IEEE test feeder to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method and the value of CATV measurements.

Transmission-Distribution Dynamic Co-Simulation of Electric Vehicles Providing Grid Frequency Response: Preprint

This paper investigates the impacts of electric vehicles (EVs) on power system frequency regulation based on an open-source transmission-and-distribution (T&D) dynamic co-simulation framework. The development of a EV dynamic model based on appropriate WECC dynamic model is introduced first, then the T&D dynamic co-simulation platform is described. The advantage of the overall platform is that DERs such as distributed photovoltaic (DPV) and EV are modeled explicitly in both transmission and distribution simulators for frequency dynamics and voltage, respectively. In the case studies, EVs frequency responses (i.e., primary and/or secondary) are simulated after the system is exposed to N-1 contingency such as a generation trip. Various EV frequency regulation participation strategies are investigated as well to study their impacts on system frequency response. The studies shows that EVs have potential capability to provide effective frequency regulation services.

A Comparison of Machine Learning Methods for Frequency Nadir Estimation in Power Systems: Preprint

An increasing penetration level of inverter-based renewable energy resources changes the inertia of power systems, posing challenges for maintaining the desired system frequency stability. An accurate frequency nadir estimation is crucial for power system operators to prepare preventive actions against large frequency excursions. In this paper, five machine learning methods - linear regression, gradient boosting, support vector regression, an artificial neural network, and XGBoost - are applied to two different sets of preprocess data for the prediction of the frequency nadir in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council 240-bus system with high renewable penetration levels. The training and testing data sets are collected by extensive generation scheduling simulations on the Multi-timescale Integrated Dynamic and Scheduling (MIDAS) toolbox. Numerical results show that all five machine learning methods can achieve high performance accuracy for power system nadir frequency estimation. Among them, the gradient boosting and the XGBoost are clear winners by providing the best prediction accuracy.

Cyber-Physical Event Emulation-Based Transmission-and-Distribution Co-Simulation for Situational Awareness of Grid Anomalies (SAGA)

Energy management of transmission and distribution networks (T&D) is becoming more challenging with the accelerated adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs)-such as distributed photovoltaic generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS)-on the electric grid. To better analyze the impacts of DERs on both transmission and distribution systems, a comprehensive T&D co-simulation platform is developed. Further, with DERs more actively participating in system operation-e.g., by providing real-time grid services-their cyber vulnerability needs to be better understood to maintain system reliability. This paper discusses a cyber-physical events emulation-based T&D co-simulation platform to perform comprehensive cyber events emulations, physical simulation, and analysis of interdependent impacts. Results from the case studies-which show how cyber events on a synthetic distribution network can impact operations on the transmission and distribution network-validate that the proposed T&D cosimulation platform can perform cyber-physical events emulation and produce response in near realtime; therefore, with extensive simulation using the proposed co-simulation platform, the system operators can accumulate adequate training data for system situational awareness of grid anomalies.

Cyber-Physical Events Emulation Based Transmission and Distribution Co-Simulation for Situation Awareness and Grid Anomaly (SAGA) Detection: Preprint

Energy management of transmission and distribution networks is becoming more challenged with the accelerated increasing of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation and distributed energy storage. To better analyze the impacts of DERs on both transmission and distribution systems, a comprehensive transmission and distribution co-simulation platform should be developed. Furthermore, with DERs more actively participated in system operation such as providing real time grid services, their cyber vulnerability should be better understood to maintain system reliability. This paper discussed a cyber-physical events emulation based transmission & distribution co-simulation platform to perform different cyber events emulation and analyze the impacts of cyber physical events happened in distribution system on the T&D system operation. The case studies with both a transmission network and a synthetic distribution network data validate that the proposed T&D co-simulation platform can perform comprehensive cyber physical events emulation. Therefore, with extensive simulation using the proposed model, the system operator can accumulate adequate training data for the system situation awareness and grid anomaly detection purpose.

Impact of DER Communication Delay in AGC: Cyber-Physical Dynamic Co-Simulation: Preprint

Distributed energy resource (DER) frequency regulations are promising technologies for future grid operation. Unlike conventional generators, DERs might require open communication networks to exchange signals with control centers, possibly through DER aggregators; therefore, the impacts of the communication variations including the latency on the system frequency stability need to be investigated. This paper develops a cyber-physical dynamic simulation (CPDS) model based on the Hierarchical Engine for Large-Scale Co-Simulation (HELICS) to evaluate the impact of the communication variations, such as delays in DER frequency regulations. The feasible delay range can be obtained under different AGC parameter settings. The results show that the risk of instability generally increases with the communication delay and that the difference of AGC provided from DER and conventional generation units should be recognized when designing frequency regulation controllers.

Providing Ancillary Services with Photovoltaic Generation in Multi- Timescale Grid Operation

With penetration levels of photovoltaic (PV) generation substantially increasing, electric power systems need more flexible resources that can provide ancillary services to mitigate the variability and uncertainty of the PV. On one hand, the increase in PV generation necessitates more flexible resources; on the other hand, because of its low operation cost, PV generation has been replacing conventional generation, which is currently the main flexible resource. Consequently, there is a trend to require renewable generation, including PV, to provide flexible ancillary services. This paper proposes a multi-timescale grid operation model considering the various control strategies of PV providing different ancillary services. Numerical case studies demonstrate that with PV providing both regulation reserve and primary frequency reserve, the system operating costs and PV curtailment will be reduced significantly. Results show that not only the system reliability can be improved but also PV profitability with PV providing more ancillary services.

Practical Operations of Energy Storage Providing Ancillary Services: From Day-Ahead to Real-Time

As renewable resources are increasingly penetrating power systems, energy storage systems (ESSs) become essential in providing both energy arbitrage and ancillary services. Because of its high flexibility, ESSs have been taken into account in the daily operation of the bulk power system in many places. This paper proposes a general framework in the current electricity market environment to help system operators model the participation of multi-type ESSs and evaluate the performance of both energy arbitrage and reserve provision. We discuss different levels of ESSs' flexibility in providing ancillary services and also consider a deliberate and practical implementation of the modeling. This framework can be seamlessly integrated into the daily market operation without sacrificing computational efficiency. Numerical experiments validate the efficacy of the proposed framework and show that ESSs possess excellent potential in providing ancillary services for the bulk power system.

A Clustering-Based Scenario Generation Framework for Power Market Simulation with Wind Integration

A critical step in stochastic optimization models of power system analysis is to select a set of appropriate scenarios and significant numbers of scenario generation methods exist in the literature. This paper develops a clustering based scenario generation method, which aims to improve the performance of existing scenario generation techniques by grouping a set of correlated wind sites into clusters according to their cross-correlations. Copula based models are utilized to model spatiotemporal correlations and the Gibbs sampling is then used to generate scenarios for day-ahead markets. Our results show that the generated scenarios based on clustered wind sites outperform existing approaches in terms of reliability and sharpness and can reduce the total computational time for scenario generation and reduction significantly. The clustering-based framework can therefore provide a better support for real-world market simulations with high wind penetration.
