On-board Neural Processor Design for an Intelligent Multi-sensor Microspacecraft

A compact VLSI neural processor based on the Optimization Cellular Neural Network (OCNN)has been under development to provide a wide range of support for an intelligent remote sensing microspacecraft which requires both high bandwidth communication and high-performance computing for on-board data analysis, thematic data reduction, synergy of multiple types of sensors, and other smart-sensor functions. The OCNN architecture is a programmable multi-dimensional array of neurons which are locally connected with their local neurons. The OCNN operation theory, architecture, design and implementation, prototype chip, and system applications have been investigated in detail and presented in this paper.

An introduction to NASA's advanced computing program: Integrated computing systems in advanced multichip modules

Recent changes within NASA's space exploration program favor the design, implementation, and operation of low cost, lightweight, small and micro spacecraft with multiple launches per year. In order to meet the future needs of these missions with regard to the use of spacecraft microelectronics, NASA's advanced flight computing (AFC) program is currently considering industrial cooperation and advanced packaging architectures. In relation to this, the AFC program is reviewed, considering the design and implementation of NASA's AFC multichip module.

Pipeline synthetic aperture radar data compression utilizing systolic binary tree-searched architecture for vector quantization

A system for data compression utilizing systolic array architecture for Vector Quantization (VQ) is disclosed for both full-searched and tree-searched. For a tree-searched VQ, the special case of a Binary Tree-Search VQ (BTSVQ) is disclosed with identical Processing Elements (PE) in the array for both a Raw-Codebook VQ (RCVQ) and a Difference-Codebook VQ (DCVQ) algorithm. A fault tolerant system is disclosed which allows a PE that has developed a fault to be bypassed in the array and replaced by a spare at the end of the array, with codebook memory assignment shifted one PE past the faulty PE of the array.

Prototype Focal-Plane-Array Optoelectronic Image Processor

Prototype very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) planar array of optoelectronic processing elements combines speed of optical input and output with flexibility of reconfiguration (programmability) of electronic processing medium. Basic concept of processor described in "Optical-Input, Optical-Output Morphological Processor" (NPO-18174). Performs binary operations on binary (black and white) images. Each processing element corresponds to one picture element of image and located at that picture element. Includes input-plane photodetector in form of parasitic phototransistor part of processing circuit. Output of each processing circuit used to modulate one picture element in output-plane liquid-crystal display device. Intended to implement morphological processing algorithms that transform image into set of features suitable for high-level processing; e.g., recognition.

VLSI Universal Noiseless Coder

Proposed universal noiseless coder (UNC) compresses stream of data signals for efficient transmission in channel of limited bandwidth. Noiseless in sense original data completely recoverable from output code. System built as very-large-scale integrated (VLSI) circuit, compressing data in real time at input rates as high as 24 Mb/s, and possibly faster, depending on specific design. Approach yields small, lightweight system operating reliably and consuming little power. Constructed as single, compact, low-power VLSI circuit chip. Design of VLSI circuit chip made specific to code algorithms. Entire UNC fabricated in single chip, worst-case power dissipation less than 1 W.

A VLSI design for universal noiseless coding

The practical, noiseless and efficient data-compression technique presented involves a conceptual VLSI design which is capable of meeting real-time processing rates and meets low-power, low-weight, and small-volume requirements. This form of data compression is applicable to image data compression aboard future low-budget spaceflight missions, for such instruments as visual-IR mapping spectrometers and high-resolution imaging spectrometers.

Real-time data compressor for Eos-class missions

A conceptual design for a real-time VLSI compressor capable of processing rate up to one gigabit per second is presented. This scheme is capable of providing a three-to-one distortion-free data reduction factor to both the High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer and processed SAR imaging data. The design uses a VLSI parallel/piplined architecture capable of processing at a real time rate. The design consists of a parallel array of VLSI compressor modules. Each module is built on a single customized VLSI chip using existing state-of-the-art semiconductor technology.
