The Surface-Topography Challenge: A Multi-Laboratory Benchmark Study to Advance the Characterization of Topography

Surface performance is critically influenced by topography in virtually all real-world applications. The current standard practice is to describe topography using one of a few industry-standard parameters. The most commonly reported number is Ra, the average absolute deviation of the height from the mean line (at some, not necessarily known or specified, lateral length scale). However, other parameters, particularly those that are scale-dependent, influence surface and interfacial properties; for example the local surface slope is critical for visual appearance, friction, and wear. The present Surface-Topography Challenge was launched to raise awareness for the need of a multi-scale description, but also to assess the reliability of different metrology techniques. In the resulting international collaborative effort, 153 scientists and engineers from 64 research groups and companies across 20 countries characterized statistically equivalent samples from two different surfaces: a “rough” and a “smooth” surface. The results of the 2088 measurements constitute the most comprehensive surface description ever compiled. We find wide disagreement across measurements and techniques when the lateral scale of the measurement is ignored. Consensus is established through scale-dependent parameters while removing data that violates an established resolution criterion and deviates from the majority measurements at each length scale. Our findings suggest best practices for characterizing and specifying topography. The public release of the accumulated data and presented analyses enables global reuse for further scientific investigation and benchmarking.

Interfacial magnetic vortex formation in exchange-coupled hard-soft magnetic bilayers

The exchange coupling between a hard magnetic layer MnBi and a soft magnetic layer Co-Fe has been found to significantly improve the maximum energy product. In this work, the spin structure of exchange coupled MnBi:Co-Fe bilayers is experimentally investigated by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and polarized neutron reflectometry (PNR). We find that the out-of-plane magnetization reversal process of the MnBi:Co-Fe bilayer structure involves formation of a curling-type twisting of the magnetization in the film plane at low or intermediate reversal fields. Additionally, micromagnetic simulations are further performed to provide a detailed view of the spins at the curling center. Reminiscent of chiral spin structures known as spin bobbers, this curling in the exchange-coupled hard-soft magnetic bilayers is a new type of skyrmionic spin structure and worth further investigation.

High intensity x-ray interaction with a model bio-molecule system: double-core-hole states and fragmentation of formamide

Formamide, a simple model bio-molecule (HCONH 2 ), is irradiated with high intensity, ultrashort pulses from an x-ray free electron laser. Ionic fragments resulting from photoionization and subsequent decay processes are recorded, as well as the electronic signature of the different inner shell ionization events that can take place during the x-ray pulses. Additionally, the formation of double-core-hole states, where a second inner shell electron is removed before the first core hole has been refilled is observed in the electron spectra, recorded at all three sites (C, N, O) of the molecule. The individual ionization potentials are compared with results of ab initio calculations at different level of theory. Based on our results, future opportunities for advanced studies of inner-shell-induced electronic and nuclear dynamics are explored.

Evolution of nontrivial Fermi surface features in the band structures of the homologous members Pb 5 Bi 6 Se 14 and Pb 5 Bi 12 Se 23

High-quality single crystals of (PbSe) 5 (Bi 2 Se 3 ) 3m were grown and analyzed by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. We report on 77 Se and 207 Pb NMR shifts and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation measurements in the naturally formed heterostructure homology (PbSe) 5 (Bi 2 Se 3 ) 3m with m = 1 (Pb 5 Bi 6 Se 14 ) and m = 2 (Pb 5 Bi 12 Se 23 ). A distinct site-specific contribution has been detected for both nuclei as a function of temperature, which reveals an electronic changeover from a semiconducting (Pb 5 Bi 6 Se 14 ) to a semimetalliclike (Pb 5 Bi 12 Se 23 ) system with nontrivial band structure features near the Fermi level. The temperature dependences of the relaxation rates are dominated by significant changes in the topology of energy dispersions accompanied with band edges and crossings in the region of the Fermi surface. These results, which interrogate nuclear spin interactions from selected atomic sites, clearly expose the effects of the added Bi 2 Se 3 layer on the crystal and electronic structure of (Pb 5 Bi 12 Se 23 ). These findings provide direct microscopic insight into the unconventional and dual nature of the electronic structure of these homologous thermoelectric and topologically nontrivial compounds.
