Registration accuracy and attitude accuracy

Since higher spatial resolution is desired by many applications disciplines coupled with registration in the sub-to-1 pixel range, improved registration accuracy has become necessary. The trend is likely to continue, with image data resolution of 10 meters or less being a routine requirement before the end of this decade. This registration accuracy can only be achieved by the combination of registration and attitude accuracy. This report described the need for improving the attitude accuracy. The relationship between registration accuracy and attitude accuracy is shown, along with criteria for design consideration in establishing adequate attitude accuracy. A precise on-board attitude control system design is essential to provide the attitude accuracy needed to support the subpixel accuracy required for registration of higher resolution images.

An analysis of spacecraft data time tagging errors

An indepth examination of the timing and telemetry in just one spacecraft points out the genesis of various types of timing errors and serves as a guide in the design of future timing/telemetry systems. The principal sources of timing errors are examined carefully and are described in detail. Estimates of these errors are also made and presented. It is found that the timing errors within the telemetry system are larger than the total timing errors resulting from all other sources.

An approach to attitude determination for a spin-stabilized spacecraft (IMP 1)

The analysis and the FORTRAN program are presented for the determination of attitude of a spin-stabilized spacecraft. The use of telemetry data that provide information about two reference vectors and their relation to the spin is outlined. A technique for the determination of the spin-axis orientation that employs only simple calculations is described.

The attitude determination of a three axes stabilized spacecraft

An approach is presented for attitude determination of a three axis stabilized spacecraft. The employment of two independent vectors is described whose components with respect to two reference coordinate axes can be known. Such two coordinate axes are right-handed three mutually orthogonal axes systems of which one is fixed in the spacecraft and the other has known orientation in space. The relationship between the two systems are then expressed as mathematical equations with the use of the two reference vectors. By computing the derived equations, the attitude of the spacecraft can be obtained.
