Chemical abundances of cosmic rays greater than 4.5 GV measured with a large area proportional counter-scintillation counter stack

A 6500 sq cm-ster cosmic ray detector consisting of twelve gas counter trays sandwiched between two large area circular scintillation counters was flown from Palestine, Texas in November of 1972 to study the composition of primary particles 1.5 GeV/nucleon in the charge range 3 to 30. For each analyzed event, a recording was made of (1) the particle trajectory using four 20 wire proportional counter trays, (2) the energy loss in each of the solid counters, and (3) the dE/dx losses in each of the twelve gas counters. The large dynamic range of the detector is established by operating six of the gas counters in the ionization mode. A description of the instrument and some preliminary results are given.

Intensity Oscillation of Low Energy Solar Particles Observed on the IMP 7 Satellite

Solar flare particles in the energy range from 125 to 160 KeV per charge were detected and analyzed by an electrostatic deflection vs. energy instrument on board the Explorer 47 (IMP 7) satellite. A harmonic analysis of the counting rates shows that frequently, the fluctuation of the particle flux can be approximately represented by N(t) = f(t)sin 2 pi nu t where f(t) is a smoothly varying function of t. The oscillation frequency nu varies from flare to flare and is of the order of 2 x .001/sec. The physical implications of the finding are discussed.

Measurement of Elemental Abundance of Very Low Energy Solar Cosmic Rays

Heavy interplanetary particles were observed during a solar flare period between October 29 and November 4, 1972. The nuclear abundance was determined by a two parameter analysis (dE/dx vs E technique) of a thin window proportional counter - solid state detector device aboard the Explorer 47 (IMP-7) satellite. Energy spectra are given for C, O and Fe. The elemental abundance relative to oxygen is determined for carbon, neon, magnesium, silicon and the iron group in the energy range 0.62 to 6.9 MeV/nucleon. For the Fe/O ratio no energy dependence could be observed within the error limits.

Differential energy spectra of low energy (less than 8.5 MeV per nucleon) heavy cosmic rays during solar quiet times

Explorer 47 satellite observations of carbon, oxygen, and heavier nuclei differential energy spectra below 8.5 MeV/nucleon are presented for solar quiet time periods. A dE/dx vs E method for particle identification and energy determination was used. The instrumentation telescope included an isobutane proportional counter, a surface barrier Si detector, and a cylindrical plastic scintillator anticoincidence shield. The observations were performed outside the bow-shock and in the ecliptic plane. Results show an anisotropy of about 25% at 22 degrees west of the sun with a C/O ratio of 0.5 supporting a solar origin. The low energy portions of the C and O spectra have steep negative slopes, and the corresponding power law is given. Peculiarities in the O spectrum are discussed.

Measurement of the Lamb shift in the O-16/7+/ ion.

The energy difference between the 2S(sub 1/2) levels in the O-16(7+) ion has been determined by means of a Stark-quenching experiment to be 2215.6 plus or minus 7.5 GHz. The uncertainty is based on measured quantities only. This result is shown to be in agreement with the results of similar measurements made by other authors.

The quiet-time spectra of cosmic-ray electrons of energies between 10 and 200 MeV observed on OGO-5.

Measurement of spectra of cosmic-ray electrons of energies between 10 and 200 MeV over a one-year period starting 1968 March. The measurement was made with a detector system on board the OGO-5 satellite. The instrument consists of a solid-state dE/dx detector, a total-energy CsI detector, a gas Cerenkov threshold detector, and two scintillation guard counters. Time periods during which no solar-flare events were recorded were selected for the study. It was found that during these quiet periods there were numerous intensity variations of the electron flux. These variations, which are seen only below 25 MeV, do not show marked correlation with any solar or interplanetary-medium parameters. The flux of the electrons of energies above 25 MeV, on the other hand, showed a gradual decrease over the one-year period, paralleling the neutron monitor intensity. The parameter describing this long-term modulation is almost independent of the rigidity of the electrons in the reported energy range. The physical implication of the finding is discussed.
