A far-ultraviolet atlas of symbiotic stars observed with IUE. 1. The SWP range

This atlas contains sample spectra from the far-ultraviolet observations of 32 symbiotic stars obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) satellite. In all, 394 low-resolution spectra from the short-wavelength primary (SWP) camera covering the range 1200-2000 A have been extracted from the IUE archive, calibrated, and measured. Absolute line fluxes and wavelengths for the prominent emission lines have been tabulated. Tables of both the general properties of these symbiotics and of features specific to the spectrum of each are included. The spectra shown are representative of the different classes of symbiotic stars that are currently in the IUE archive. These include known eclipsing systems and those that have been observed in outburst (as well as quiescence).

C IV line profile correlations in NGC 4151

Novel correlations are presented between the peak emission of the two components of the strong UV resonance line C IV in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 and the total luminosity of the line. These correlations are distinctly different for the red and the blue peaks of the double-peaked C IV profile, implying that the physical parameters involved in their formation are quite different. The behavior of the red component appears more in accordance with the behavior of lines observed in other objects, while that of the blue peak appears more directly and strongly related to C IV luminosity and shows greater sensitivity to C IV flux changes. These findings imply the existence of specific, hitherto unknown, underlying physical processes.

C IV: Line profile correlations in NGC 4151

Relative flux changes of the narrow emission lines that form the double-peaked structure of the C 4 line in NGC 4151 suggest two distinct regions of line formation. Correlations independent of model assumptions show the response to variations of the red and blue peak intensities to the total C 4 flux are significantly different. The dependence of the red peak intensity relative to the total C 4 flux, defined as the flux in a specified wavelength range lambda lambda 1520-1580, suggests this component is formed in an extended photoionized region. The blue component appears more directly dependent on variations of the total C 4 flux, which may indicate a close association with nuclear outflow. Possible implications for broad line region models are discussed.

The anomalous C 4 intensity ratio in symbiotic stars

The C IV lambda lambda 1548.2,1550.8 resonance doublet in a symbiotic stars was shown to exhibit anomalous line intensity ratios in which I (lambda 1548.2)/I(lambda 1550.8) less than 1, or less than the optically-thick limit of unity. The R Aquarii-central HII region and RX Puppis exhibit this phenomena. The I(lambda 1548.2)/I(lambda 1550.8) ratio in RX Puppis is found to vary inversely with the total C IV line intensity, and with the FES-visual light, as the object declined over a 5 yr period following a brightening in UV and optical emission which peaked in 1982. This doublet intensity behavior could be explained by a wind which has a narrow velocity range of 600 approx. less than sup v wind approx. less than 1000 km/sec, or by the pumping of the Fe II (mul. 45.01) transition a sup 4 F sub 9/2 - y sup 4 H(o) sub 11/2 by C IV lambda 1548.2, which effectively scatters C IV photons into the Fe II spectrum in these objects.

The problem of V444 Cygni

High-resolution short-wavelength IUE spectra were used to characterize the eclipsing binary system V444 Cygni. Light curves derived from the data revealed a 'third light' in the system that could not be modeled solely in terms of the eclipse of one limb-darkened disk by another. The UV-visible light curve corresponded with one O component (10 solar masses) at an effective temperature (Teff) of 40,000 K and a WR star (9 solar masses) with a Teff of 30,000 K. The WR star is projected to have large, readily visible, magnetic field-supported plumes enveloping both stars. Light scattering by electrons in the plumes would cause the anomalies observed in the emission-line spectrum and continuum light from the objects.

High-dispersion ultraviolet spectra of the peculiar star RX Puppis

High spectral resolution observations of the peculiar star RX Puppis obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer suggest the presence of a complex gaseous ring system which surrounds an accreting hot secondary. The anomalous line intensity ratio of the C IV 1548, 1550 A doublet during the observations exceeded the optically thick limit, implying the presence of a high-velocity wind. Additionally, the C IV doublet exhibits about four or five narrow emission components, which are redshifted up to velocities of at least about + 300 km/s (with respect to the rest wavelength).

Dynamical activity in V1016 Cygni

New high-dispersion IUE observations show the C IV emission lines in V1016 Cygni to be split, suggesting evidence for dynamical activity. The Mg V line shows structure nearly identical to the C IV lines when plotted in velocity space.

The prototype MOSAIC detector

The prototype of the MOSAIC (Mosaicked Optical Self-scanned Array Imaging Camera) system, a photon-counting detector designed for use in the far ultraviolet, is described. MOSAIC has a two-dimensional format of 2400 x 2400 pixels, and is easily expandable. Readout is accomplished electronically via charge-coupled devices, making possible remote observations. Preliminary results of computer simulations of the system are presented.

Comparison of variations in the visible and ultraviolet spectra of a Centauri

Short and long wavelength, high resolution IUE spectrographs of the He I spectrum variable star a Cen are the basis of the present equivalent width and central depth measurements of UV absorption lines. The period for cyclic intensity variations is determined by means of a four-parameter, least squares fit to a sinusoid. Other spectrographic and photometric intensity determinations of the He I 4026 A line are combined with the present data to yield a period of 8.81620 + or - 0.00006 days.

Do bipolar magnetic regions exist on the surfaces of early-type stars?

The observations of relatively narrow absorption components of the UV resonance lines in the spectra of early-type stars are reviewed, and some new observational data are presented for Rho Leo (B1 Ib). It is shown that the discrete components which are seen in the UV resonance lines of early-type stars are a result of ejection from local spots above the photospheres of hot stars. It is suggested that localized ejection is caused by magnetic flux lines associated with a bipolar magnetic region on the surface of the star.

Intensity changes in the UV spectrum of Beta Cephei

Fifty eight short wavelength International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra were taken over a 152 day period. Variations in the absorption lines of C IV (1550 A), Si IV (1393 and 1404 A) and N V (1239 and 1243 A) and a Cr III feature (1208 to 1211 A) were observed. A data reduction technique was developed in order to compare the changes in the equivalent widths of these absorption lines. Periods were determined by least squares fit to a sinusoid using several combinations of the data. In one case eighteen spectra for each ion taken at approximately one day intervals were used; in another, all 58 measurements of each were used; and in a third all measurements from all the ions wee combined. Using both variable metric and interactive algorithms it was determined that for all combinations mentioned a period of 6.10 + or - .06 days is the best fit to the vector of equivalent widths versus time. No other period, with or without the 6.10 day period removed from the data, was found. Analysis of the Cr III feature near 1210 A gives the same period as the others, but in antiphase.

Variations in the UV spectrum of a Centauri

Equivalent width and central depth measurements of the ultraviolet absorption lines from the spectrum of the He I variable star a Cen HD 125823 are presented. The measurements are from 53 short wavelength, and 45 long wavelength, high resolution spectrographs taken with the IUE satellite over a 25 day period during July and August of 1978. Central depth measurements were of lines of Cr III, Mn III, V III, C III, Si II, and S II seen in the region between 1245 and 1255 A. Equivalent widths are of the three He I 2(3)s-n(3po) transitions found at 2945, 2829 and 2764 A. The period for cyclic intensity variations in He I is determined using a four parameter, least squares fit to a sinusoid. The IUE observations match both a period of 8.8163 + or - 0.0003 days and a previously unreported period of 9.2532 + or - 0.0003 days with equal minima for the least squares fit. The phase of Cr III maximum relative to He I maximum is found to be 0.53 cycles for the IUE observations.

Broad absorption features in a Centauri

Nightly mean intensity tracings of the spectrum of a Centauri in the neighborhood of lines from multiplets 41 and 43 Fe I are presented for ten consecutive nights. On some nights, broad, shallow absorption features appear at the positions of the Fe I lines.
