Workshop on Radiographic Imaging and Applications Research and Development Recommendations for Field Radiography

The Workshop on Radiographic Imaging and Applications (WORIA) brought together subject matter experts from industry, academia, US and UK government agencies, and the national laboratories to provide a forum to liaise and share information between technology developers in government and industry, end users, and mission stakeholder to produce an “expert consensus view” regarding future research directions toward a comprehensive radiography/penetrating imaging portfolio in the Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development Near Field Detection Portfolio. The inaugural WORIA was held at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on February 7–9, 2023. The inaugural WORIA meeting focused on field radiography applications, or situations in which a portable imaging system must be brought to an item of interest (rather than the item brought to an imaging facility). This report documents consensus views derived from the meeting and provides research and development recommendations for federal program managers.

ASIC Scoping Study Final Report

This report documents the results and findings of a one-year scoping study investigating multichannel readout application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for interfacing to, and processing data from, silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays. We document ASIC desired and required specifications for four applications supporting national security mission areas: neutron radiography, associated particle imaging, and two versions of kinematic neutron imaging cameras. While each application has a few unique requirements that stress capability, there is generally good agreement among most. Two recently developed ASIC devices were evaluated in a system-like configuration by interfacing these to scintillator crystals exposed to gamma and neutron sources. The 64-channel ORNL device delivered functional capability while meeting most mission requirements for neutron radiography. The Nalu Scientific device, a 32-channel full waveform digitizer, did not demonstrate reliable neutron / gamma separation but it is unclear if this was an ASIC issue or problems with test setup or firmware. A literature survey of other commercial and academic ASICs was undertaken to with the conclusion that existing devices do not meet all requirements.

Measurement of Electron-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections on 127 I with the COHERENT NaI$ν$E Detector

Using an 185-kg NaI[Tl] array, COHERENT has measured the inclusive electron-neutrino chargedcurrent cross section on 127 I with pion decay-at-rest neutrinos produced by the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Iodine is one the heaviest targets for which low-energy (≤ 50 MeV) inelastic neutrino-nucleus processes have been measured, and this is the first measurement of its inclusive cross section. After a five-year detector exposure, COHERENT reports a flux-averaged cross section for electron neutrinos of ${9.2}_{–1.8}^{+2.1}$ × 10 –40 cm 2 . This corresponds to a value that is ~41% lower than predicted using the MARLEY event generator with a measured Gamow-Teller strength distribution. In addition, the observed visible spectrum from charged-current scattering on 127 I has been measured between 10 and 55 MeV, and the exclusive zero-neutron and one-or-more-neutron emission cross sections are measured to be ${5.2}_{–3.1}^{+3.4}$ × 10 –40 and ${2.2}_{—2.2}^{+3.5}$ × 10 –40 cm 2 , respectively.

A 32-channels readout ASIC for X-ray spectrometry and tracking in the GAPS experiment

Here this work describes the architecture and the experimental results from the characterization of a 32-channels mixed-signal Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) developed for the readout of the lithium-drifted silicon, Si(Li), detectors of the General AntiParticle Spectrometer (GAPS) experiment dedicated to searching for dark matter. The instrument is designed for the identification of antiprotons, antideuterons and antihelium nuclei from cosmic rays during an Antarctic balloon mission scheduled for late 2024. A full custom integrated circuit, named SLIDER32 (32-channels Si-LI DEtector Readout) ASIC, has been produced in a commercial 180 nm CMOS technology. The ASIC is comprised of 32 low-noise analog readout channels featuring dynamic signal compression to comply with the wide input range, an 11-bit SAR ADC and a digital back-end section which is responsible for channel setting and for sending digital information to the data acquisition system (DAQ). The circuit design criteria and the experimental results are discussed in the paper.

Novel Cascaded Ring Oscillator Vernier based TDC Architecture with a Feedthrough Reference Oscillator

Time to digital converters (TDCs) are widely used in particle physics and medical imaging to determine the relative arrival time of photons and other particles. Vernier TDCs are one of the most attractive options due to their power consumption efficiency and their small footprint. We present our newly patented innovative architecture of cascaded-stage Vernier TDCs comprised of a feedthrough reference oscillator. This architecture lead to successive Vernier measurements that result in a lower number of cycles for the same dynamic range to resolution ratio (DRRR), leading to reduced conversion time and lower jitter. To validate this architecture, a test chip was designed in 0.18~μm TSMC technology, integrating four types of cascaded Vernier TDCs with an increasing number of stages. The performance of the chip was assessed using a modular test platform specifically designed for TDCs. For comparison purposes, all TDCs were tested with a LSB of 50~ps and a dynamic range of 20~ns. The experimental results demonstrate the highest gain in performance between 1 stage Vernier and 2 stage Vernier TDCs with the precision improved from 36~ps~rms to 21~ps~rms, the maximum number of turns from 110 to 25 counts and the dead time, from 266.4~ns to 76.5~ns, on average. Adding Vernier stages is only relevant for a higher DRRR. Therefore, the 3-stage and 4-stage Vernier TDCs also show performance gains, but improvements are limited.

Experimental results from the characterization of a 32-channels mixed-signal processor for the GAPS experiment

This work describes the experimental results obtained from the characterization of a 32-channels readout ASIC that is the core of a module composed by 4 Lithium-drifted Silicon, Si(Li), detectors. The module is the building block of a tracker in an upcoming balloon experiment. The activity is carried out within the General AntiParticle Spectrometer (GAPS) international collaboration, whose objective is the indirect detection of dark matter through the detection of antiparticles present in cosmic rays at low energies. The balloon flight is foreseen in 2024 from the McMurdo station in Antarctica. The ASIC is designed in a 180 nm CMOS technology and has 32 low-noise analog readout channels featuring a dynamic compression of the signal, an 11-bit SAR ADC, and a digital back-end section responsible for channel setting and for sending digital information to the data acquisition system of the tracker. This work has a twofold goal: it intends on the one hand to verify the performance of the circuit, on the other to select at least 300 good samples to be used for the assembly of the GAPS Si(Li) tracker.
