Comparison of Ozone Retrievals from the Pandora Spectrometer System and Dobson Spectrophotometer in Boulder, Colorado

A comparison of retrieved total column ozone (TCO) amounts between the Pandora #34 spectrometer system and the Dobson #061 spectrophotometer from direct-sun observations was performed on the roof of the Boulder, Colorado, NOAA building. This paper, part of an ongoing study, covers a 1-year period starting on 17 December 2013. Both the standard Dobson and Pandora TCO retrievals required a correction, TCO(sub corr) = TCO (1 + C(T)), using a monthly varying effective ozone temperature, T(sub E), derived from a temperature and ozone profile climatology. The correction is used to remove a seasonal difference caused by using a fixed temperature in each retrieval algorithm. The respective corrections C(T(sub E)) are C(sub Pandora) = 0.00333(T(sub E) - 225) and C(sub Dobson) = -0.0013(T(sub E) - 226.7) per degree K. After the applied corrections removed most of the seasonal retrieval dependence on ozone temperature, TCO agreement between the instruments was within 1% for clear-sky conditions. For clear-sky observations, both co-located instruments tracked the day-to-day variation in total column ozone amounts with a correlation of r(exp 2) = 0.97 and an average offset of 1.1 +/- 5.8 DU. In addition, the Pandora TCO data showed 0.3% annual average agreement with satellite overpass data from AURA/OMI (Ozone Monitoring Instrument) and 1% annual average offset with Suomi-NPP/OMPS (Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership, the nadir viewing portion of the Ozone Mapper Profiler Suite).

Saturn's Hydrogen Aurora as Observed by HST

We describe Saturn's aurora as observed by HST in 10/1994, 10/1995, and 10-12/1997. HST provides access to the auroral emissions due to atomic and molecular hydrogen in the northern and southern auroral zones.

Periodicities in the occurrence rate of solar proton events

Power spectral analyses of the time series of solar proton events during the past three solar cycles reveal a periodicity around 154 days. This feature is prominent in all of the cycles combined, cycles 19 and 21 individually, but is only weak in cycle 20. These results are consistent with the presence of similar periodicities between 152 and 155 days in the occurrence rate of major solar flares, the sunspot blocking function (Ps), the 10.7 cm radio flux (F10.7), and the sunspot number (Rz). This suggests that the circa 154-days periodicity may be a fundamental characteristic of the sun. Periods around 50-52 days are also found in the combined data set and in the three individual cycles, in general agreement with the detection of this periodicity in major flares in cycle 19, and in Ps, F10.7, and Rz in cycle 21. The cause of the 155 day period remains unknown. The spectra contain lines (or show power at frequencies) consistent with a model in which the periodicity is caused by differential rotation of active zones and a model in which it is related to beat frequencies between solar oscillations, as proposed by Wolff (1974, 1983).

Rapid evolution of a Gulf Stream warm-core ring

Satellite images are used to show that major alterations in the structure of Gulf Stream warm-core rings can occur during very short periods of two to five days when an interaction with the Gulf Stream is particularly intense. The role of these interactions in the evolution of a ring are discussed.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry study of sterols from Pinus elliotti tissues.

A comparative study of the sterol components of slash pine (Pinus elliotti) callus tissue cultures, seeds, and seedlings was carried out using GC-MS techniques. Cholesterol, desmosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, sitosterol and cycloeucalenol were identified in all tissues while lophenol and 24-methylenelophenol were identified in only the seed and seedlings. 24-Ethylidenelophenol was detected in trace concentrations in only the seedlings. Sitosterol was the predominant sterol component, i.e., 80.8, 38.1 and 47.8% of the tissue culture, seed and seedling sterols, respectively.

Calculations of electrical transport properties of liquid metals at high pressures

It is shown how the usual nearly-free-electron model for the electrical resistivity of simple liquid metals can be extended to the case of liquid transition metals such as iron. A simple prescription is given for calculating the resistivity at different densities and temperatures. As an application and example of the method, calculations on liquid iron at different densities were carried out and the resistivity of molten iron in the earth's outer core is estimated. The effects of alloying iron with other elements are also considered. The calculated conductivity of the outer core is well within the limit required for the dynamo model of the geomagnetic field and agrees well with some recent shock wave data.
