Thermodynamic properties of small aggregates of rare-gas atoms

The present work reports on the equilibrium thermodynamic properties of small clusters of xenon, krypton, and argon atoms, determined from a biased random-walk Monte Carlo procedure. Cluster sizes ranged from 3 to 13 atoms. Each cluster was found to have an abrupt liquid-gas phase transition at a temperature much less than for the bulk material. An abrupt solid-liquid transition is observed for thirteen- and eleven-particle clusters. For cluster sizes smaller than 11, a gradual transition from solid to liquid occurred over a fairly broad range of temperatures. Distribution of number of bond lengths as a function of bond length was calculated for several systems at various temperatures. The effects of box boundary conditions are discussed. Results show the importance of a correct description of boundary conditions. A surprising result is the slow rate at which system properties approach bulk behavior as cluster size is increased.

The ground state properties of spin-aligned atomic hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium

The internal energy, pressure, and compressibility of ground-state, spin-aligned atomic hydrogen, deuterium, and tritium are calculated assuming that all pair interactions occur via the atomic triplet (spin-aligned) potential. The conditions required to obtain atomic hydrogen and its isotopes in bulk are discussed; such a development would be of value in propulsion systems because of the light mass and energetic recombination of atomic hydrogen. Results show that atomic triplet hydrogen and deuterium remain gaseous at 0 K, and that tritium forms a liquid with a binding energy of approximately -0.75 K per atom at a molar volume of 130 cu cm per mole. The pair distribution function for these systems is calculated, and the predicted superfluid behavior of atomic triplet hydrogen and tritium is briefly discussed.

Dynamic-local-field approximation for the quantum solids

A local-molecular-field description for the ground-state properties of the quantum solids is presented. The dynamical behavior of atoms contributing to the local field, which acts on an arbitrary pair of test particles, is incorporated by decoupling the pair correlations between these field atoms. The energy, pressure, compressibility, single-particle-distribution function, and the rms atomic deviations about the equilibrium lattice sites are calculated for H2, He-3, and He-4 over the volume range from 5 to 24.5 cu cm/mole. The results are in close agreement with existing Monte Carlo calculations wherever comparisons are possible. At very high pressure, the results agree with simplified descriptions which depend on negligible overlap of the system wave function between neighboring lattice sites.

Ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen

Theoretical calculation of the ground state properties of spin-alined atomic hydrogen by the Monte Carlo method. The interatomic interaction, as described by the results of Kolos and Wolniewicz (1965), is made fit to a Morse potential form. An appropriate trail wavefunction is formed from the short-range part of the WKB solution for a pair of atoms interacting through a Morse potential.
