Simultaneous holographic and photocurrent studies of the photorefractive effect in LiTaO3 and LiNbO3

In reduced LiNbO3:Mn both the photorefractive sensitivity and the simultaneously measured photocurrent result from drift with a polarization-dependent effective 'internal field' of about 6 kV/cm. In reduced undoped LiTaO3 the observed difference in applied fields of the minimum photorefractive sensitivity and zero photocurrent imply charge transport is by a mechanism that cannot be completely described by diffusion and drift in an electric field. The direct measurement of the harmonic content of phase gratings written in several LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 crystals shows termination of charge-transport results from the space-charge field of the hologram.

Sensitivity and fatigue of LiTaO3 for holographic recording

The sensitivity of LiTaO3 crystals to hologram formation has been observed to vary with impurity concentration. For a writing wavelength of 488.0 nm and power density of 1.1 W/sq cm, the sensitivity varied from a value comparable to the most sensitive doped LiNbO3 for an impure crystal to a value more than 5 orders of magnitude smaller for a purer crystal. Fatigue effects were observed upon write-erase cycling. These effects were dependent upon writing and erasure polarization and power density and could be minimized by proper choice of optical parameters.

Fatigue effects were observed upon write-erase cycling. These effects were dependent upon writing and erasure polarization and power and could be virtually eliminated by proper choice of optical parameters.

EPR investigation of Ti2+ in SrCl2 single crystals.

The observation of 'double quantum' transitions which made it possible to determine the charge state of Ti as 2+ is reported. The EPR spectrum observed at 1.2 K is presented in a graph. The first derivative of the absorption is shown vs the magnetic field. The hyperfine patterns for the Ti-47 and Ti-49 isotopes are identified. Spin-Hamiltonian parameters for Ti(2+) in various cubic hosts are listed.

Observation of a quadrupole interaction for cubic imperfections exhibiting a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect.

The observation and interpretation of weak EPR transitions, identified as 'forbidden' transitions, establish the existence of a new type of quadrupole interaction for cubic-symmetry imperfections. This interaction is simply a consequence of the ground-vibronic-state degeneracy. The signs as well as the magnitudes of the quadrupole-coupling coefficients are determined experimentally. These data agree well with the predictions of crystal field theory modified to account for a weak-to-moderate vibronic interaction (i.e., a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect).

An EPR investigation of the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in SrCl2:y(2 plus) and SrCl2:Sc(2 plus)

EPR spectra have been observed for SrCl2:Y(2+) and SrCl2:Sc(2+) at liquid helium temperatures. At 1.2 K the spectra were dominated by anisotropic hyperfine patterns whose lineshapes and angular dependences were explained using second order solutions of the effective Hamiltonian for an isolated 2Eg state split by large random internal strains. Pronounced asymmetries in some of the strin produced lineshapes for Srcl2:Sc(2+) are shown to result from second order terms in the solution of the effective Hamiltonian. Coexisting with the anisotropic hyperfine patterns are weak nearly isotropic hyperfine patterns with typical lineshapes. Variations in the apparent intensity of lines in these weak hyperfine patterns as functions of the applied magnetic field direction and temperature imply that these lines result from averaging by vibronic relaxation of a portion of the anisotropic pattern. The effective Hamiltonian parameters for SrCl2:La(2+), SrCl2:y(2+), and SrCl2:SC(2+) are analyzed in terms of crystal field theory modified to include a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect.
