Unusual electrical conductivity driven by localized stoichiometry modification at vertical epitaxial interfaces

Precise control of lattice mismatch accommodation and interfacial cation diffusion is critical to modulate correlated functionalities in epitaxial heterostructures, particularly when the interface composition is positioned near a compositional phase transition boundary. Here we select La 1-x Sr x MnO 3 (LSMO) as a prototype phase transition oxide and establish vertical epitaxial interfaces with NiO for exploring the strong interplay between strain accommodation, stoichiometry modification, and localized electron transport across the interface. It is found that localized stoichiometry modification overcomes the dead layer problem plaguing LSMO and leads to strongly directional conductivity, as manifested by a more than three orders of magnitude difference between out-of-plane and in-plane conductivity. Comprehensive atomic scale structural characterization and transport measurements reveal that this emerging behavior is created by a compositional change produced by preferential cation diffusion that pushes the LSMO phase transition from insulating into metallic within an ultrathin interface region. This study explores the nature of unusual electrical conductivity at vertical epitaxial interfaces and highlights the beneficial role of controllable cation diffusion that enables emerging functionalities for a broad range of potential applications such as memristors, spintronic devices, and novel nanoelectronic devices using strongly correlated materials.

Strong spin-dephasing in a topological insulator-paramagnet heterostructure

The interface between magnetic materials and topological insulators can drive the formation of exotic phases of matter and enable functionality through the manipulation of the strong spin polarized transport. Here, we report that the transport processes that rely on strong spin-momentum locking in the topological insulator Bi 2 Se 3 are completely suppressed by scattering at a heterointerface with the kagome-lattice paramagnet, Co 7 Se 8 . Bi 2 Se 3 –Co 7 Se 8 –Bi 2 Se 3 trilayer heterostructures were grown using molecular beam epitaxy, where magnetotransport measurements revealed a substantial suppression of the weak antilocalization effect for Co 7 Se 8 at thicknesses as thin as a monolayer, indicating a strong dephasing mechanism. Bi 2- x Co x Se 3 films, in which Co is in a non-magnetic 3 + state, show weak antilocalization that survives to higher than x = 0.4, which, in comparison with the heterostructures, suggests that the unordered moments of Co 2+ act as a far stronger dephasing element. This work highlights several important points regarding coherent transport processes involving spin-momentum locking in topological insulator interfaces and how magnetic materials can be integrated with topological materials to realize both exotic phases and novel device functionality.

Unexpected crystalline homogeneity from the disordered bond network in La(Cr 0.2 Mn 0.2 Fe 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 )O 3 films

Designing and understanding functional electronic and magnetic properties in perovskite oxides requires controlling and tuning the underlying crystal lattice. In this work, we report the structure, including oxygen and cation positions, of a single-crystal, entropy stabilized perovskite oxide film of La(Cr 0.2 Mn 0.2 Fe 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 )O 3 grown on SrTiO3 (001). The parent materials range from orthorhombic (LaCrO 3 , LaMnO 3 , and LaFeO 3 ) to rhombohedral (LaCoO 3 and LaNiO 3 ), and first principles calculations indicate that these structural motifs are nearly degenerate in energy and should be highly distorted site to site. Despite this extraordinary local configurational disorder on the B-site sublattice, we find a structure with unexpected macroscopic crystalline homogeneity with a clear orthorhombic unit cell, whose orientation is demonstrated to be controlled by the strain and crystal structure of the substrate for films grown on (La 0.3 Sr 0.7 )(Al 0.65 Ta 0.35 )O 3 and NdGaO 3 (110). Furthermore, quantification of the atom positions within the unit cell reveals that the orthorhombic distortions are small, close to LaCrO 3, which may be driven by a combination of disorder averaging and the average ionic radii. This is a step toward understanding the rules for designing crystal motifs and tuning functional properties through controlled configurational complexity.

Vertically Aligned Single-Crystalline CoFe 2 O 4 Nanobrush Architectures with High Magnetization and Tailored Magnetic Anisotropy

Micrometer-tall vertically aligned single-crystalline CoFe 2 O 4 nanobrush architectures with extraordinarily large aspect ratio have been achieved by the precise control of a kinetic and thermodynamic non-equilibrium pulsed laser epitaxy process. Direct observations by scanning transmission electron microscopy reveal that the nanobrush crystal is mostly defect-free by nature, and epitaxially connected to the substrate through a continuous 2D interface layer. In contrast, periodic dislocations and lattice defects such as anti-phase boundaries and twin boundaries are frequently observed in the 2D interface layer, suggesting that interface misfit strain relaxation under a non-equilibrium growth condition plays a critical role in the self-assembly of such artificial architectures. Further, magnetic property measurements have found that the nanobrushes exhibit a saturation magnetization value of 6.16 μB/f.u., which is much higher than the bulk value. The discovery not only enables insights into an effective route for fabricating unconventional high-quality nanostructures, but also demonstrates a novel magnetic architecture with potential applications in nanomagnetic devices.
