Tropical forest phenology monitoring undertaken by use of Wingscapes timelapse cameras (phenocams) at three tropical evergreen forests in Panama: San Lorenzo, Parque Natural Metropolitano, and Barro Colorado Island. Following installation in December 2016, images were acquired every 10 minutes from 10 am to 2 pm daily, ending in May 2019. A total of 37 cameras were mounted on towers and tree branches, and view sunlit canopy or understory forest as follows: PA-SLZ, 11 canopy, 14 understory; PA-PNM, 6 canopy, 2 understory, PA-BCI, 4 canopy (trees also monitored for sap flow). This data package contains a full data description, metadata, species identification guides and summary files showing example fields of view from each camera location as csv and pdf files. The data description provides instructions for download of the full resolution image files, and other summary data products stored on external servers.

Leaf spectral reflectance and transmittance, San Lorenzo, Panama, 2020

This data package contains full-range (350 – 2500 nm) leaf reflectance and transmittance spectra of leaves collected at the San Lorenzo forest canopy crane site in Panama (PA-SLZ) from January to March 2020. Around 1000 leaves were measured from 50 species and various leaf phenological stages. Leaves were sampled from both the top of the canopy and multiple heights within the canopy from 10 vertical profiles and for six core species, from the top of the canopy. This data package includes processed leaf spectra (*.csv), and raw data from the spectroradiometer (compressed as .zip). Metadata files include data descriptions (_dd.csv) for tabular data and sample information and a description of the field campaign protocol (PA-SLZ_2020_Protocol.pdf). In addition to the leaf spectral measurements included here, these samples were also used for measurement of leaf gas exchange, carbon and nitrogen content and leaf mass per unit leaf area (LMA) contained in related data packages.

Leaf gas exchange and fitted parameters, San Lorenzo, Panama, 2020

This data package contains photosynthetic CO2 response curves (ACi curves), light response curves (AQ curves), dark adapted dark respiration, conductance curves, and survey measurements for leaves measured at the San Lorenzo forest canopy crane site, Panama (PA-SLZ) from January to March 2020. Leaves were sampled from both the top of the canopy and multiple heights within the canopy from 10 vertical profiles and included around 50 species. In addition, six core species were also measured, from the top of the canopy. Fitted maximum carboxylation rate (Vcmax), maximum electron transport rate (Jmax), and triose phosphate utilization rate (TPU) were derived from measured data as well as the convexity, light use efficiency, apparent quantum yield, and Rdark. The measurements can also be used to derive the conductance parameters g0 and g1 of stomatal model. All the gas exchange data and metadata are presented in .csv files and complete instrument output are included in .zip folders. Data and metadata meet the ESS-DIVE leaf-level gas exchange reporting format requirements. The protocol details are provided as pdf documents. In addition to gas exchange data described here these samples were also used for measurement of leaf optical properties, carbon and nitrogen content, and leaf mass per unit leaf area (LMA) these data can be cross linked using the unique sample ID and are provided in separate related data packages. Sample information including canopy elevation and leaf area index (LAI) can be found in the related “Leaf and canopy traits” data package.

Diurnal leaf water potential on four tree species, San Lorenzo, Panama, 2020

This data package contains pre-dawn and diurnal leaf water potential (LWP) measured on four trees at the STRI San Lorenzo crane site between January and March 2020. These data were collected from four of the core trees instrumented for sap flux (Guatteria dumetorum, Miconia minutiflora, Terminalia amazonia,Vochysia ferruginea), with measurements made on a single tree on each day. For each tree, leaf samples were harvested from fully sunlit, top of canopy positions pre-dawn (06:00 local time), and then hourly for the subsequent 12 hours. Leaf water potential was measured on 6 - 10 leaves from each time point. Harvested leaves were stored in a cool humid bag in the dark for no more than 40 minutes before LWP was measured. These data were collected as part of a 2020 dry season campaign led by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Refer to related datasets for further sample details, and paired leaf mass area (LMA), survey gas exchange, and leaf chemistry data. The files included in this data package are in .csv format, and include one data file and three metadata files.

ESS-DIVE reporting format for leaf-level gas exchange data and metadata

Here we present documentation of the ESS-DIVE reporting format for leaf-level gas exchange data and metadata. This reporting format provides guidance to data contributors on how to store data to maximize their discoverability, facilitate their efficient reuse, and add value to individual datasets. For data users, the reporting format will better allow data repositories to optimize data search and extraction, and more readily integrate similar data into harmonized synthesis products. The reporting format specifies data table variable naming and unit conventions, as well as metadata characterizing experimental conditions and protocols. For common data types that were the focus of this initial version of the reporting format, i.e., survey measurements, dark respiration, carbon dioxide and light response curves, and parameters derived from those measurements, we took a further step of defining required additional data that would maximize the potential reuse of those data types. To aid data contributors and the development of data ingest tools by data repositories we provided a translation table comparing the outputs of common gas exchange instruments. The reporting format presented here is intended to form a foundation for future development that will incorporate additional data types and variables as gas exchange systems and measurement approaches advance in the future. The reporting format documentation is maintained and updated on the ESS-DIVE Community Space GitHub. This data package is the first published version of this reporting format, and comprises a zip file of the complete content of https://github.com/ess-dive-community/essdive-leaf-gas-exchange v1.0. The zip contains the reporting format description, guidelines, variable tables and instructions in GitHub markdown language (*.md) and 2 metadata templates as spreadsheets with drop down options (*.xlsx files, also function in GoogleSheets).
