A unique airborne observation

The occultation of 3rd magnitude Epsilon Geminorum by Mars was observed using a 36-inch telescope equipped with a photoelectric photometer at the bent Cassegrain focus, carried aboard the Kuiper Airborne Observatory at altitudes up to 45,000 feet. Scintillation from the earth's atmosphere was greatly reduced in comparison with ground observations. The observations clearly show the central flash, caused by the symmetrical refraction of light by the atmosphere of Mars. The data are being analyzed to obtain temperature profiles and to assess the relative abundance of argon and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of the planet.

Stellar occultation spikes as probes of atmospheric structure and composition

The characteristics of spikes observed in occultation light curves of Beta Scorpii by Jupiter are discussed in terms of the gravity-gradient model. The occultation of Beta Sco by Jupiter on May 13, 1971, is reviewed, and the gravity-gradient model is defined as an isothermal atmosphere of constant composition in which the refractivity is a function only of the radial coordinate from the center of refraction, which is assumed to lie parallel to the local gravity gradient. The derivation of the occultation light curve in terms of the atmosphere, the angular diameter of the occulted star, and the occultation geometry is outlined. It is shown that analysis of the light-curve spikes can yield the He/H2 concentration ratio in a well-mixed atmosphere, information on fine-scale atmospheric structure, high-resolution images of the occulted star, and information on ray crossing. Observational limits are placed on the magnitude of horizontal refractivity gradients, and it is concluded that the spikes are the result of local atmospheric density variations: atmospheric layers, density waves, or turbulence.

Galilean satellites - Observations of mutual occultations and eclipses in 1973

Seven Galilean satellite mutual events, two occultations and two eclipses of Europa and three eclipses of Io, were observed at three wavelengths (0.35, 0.50, 0.91 micrometers) with a time resolution of 0.1 sec. Preliminary model fits to the light curves are presented. Model satellites with different albedo distributions (uniform disk, bright solar caps, bright quadrant) are used in generating model occultation and eclipse curves to demonstrate the sensitivity of observed light curves to the brightness distribution on the surface of the occulted or eclipsed satellite. At the present the observations yield no conclusive information of the limb-darkening of Io. The best data for Europa indicate that the satellite is limb-darkened at both 0.50 and 0.91 micrometers.

Lunar occultation of Saturn. I - The diameters of Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Titan, and Iapetus

The diameters of Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Titan and Iapetus were determined from observations of their March 30, 1974, lunar occultations, made with the Mauna Kea 224 and 61 cm telescopes. Light curves were obtained simultaneously in four colors, and the difference between the time of occultation at the two telescopes provided a direct measurement of the slope of the lunar limb, found to be small in all cases. The satellite diameters were determined by least-squares fits of model occultation light curves to the data. Titan's diameter must be at least 5800 km, much larger than the currently accepted value of 5000 km, making it the largest satellite in the solar system. This larger diameter implies a low mean density. For the other four satellites arguments are presented in favor of accepting the occultation diameters corresponding to limb darkened disks. Except for Titan, the lunar occultation diameters generally agree with previous diskmeter and radiometric determinations.

The occultation of beta Scorpii by Jupiter. VI - The masses of beta Scorpii A1 and A2

From images of the spectroscopic binary beta Sco A, formed by the Jovian atmosphere during its 1971 May 13 occultation by Jupiter, the angular separation of the binary components was found to be 0.001496 plus of minus 0.000018 arcsec. The combination of this measurement, the elements of the spectroscopic orbit, and the parallax determination of Bertiau (1958) yields masses of 21.1 plus or minus 3.2 solar masses for the primary (B0.5 V) and 12.7 plus or minus 1.9 solar masses for the secondary. New observations are suggested for improving the accuracy of the mass determinations.

Occultation of beta Scorpii by Jupiter. V - The emersion of beta Scorpii C

Use of multicolor photometry to remove planetary limb contamination from occultation light curves is demonstrated. This color restoration procedure is shown to be more advantageous than limb scanning techniques since it allows continuous observation of the occultation. Sharp spikes appearing in the light curve of beta Sco C are compared with those observed during the occultation of beta Sco AB, and a model is developed for estimating the effects of all factors affecting the observed shape of a spike. The widths of the narrowest spikes are shown to correspond closely to the angular diameters of the occulted stars, suggesting that occultation spikes can be used to determine stellar diameters.

Six-color photometry of Iapetus, Titan, Rhea, Dione and Tethys

Six-color photometric observations made during Saturn's 1972/73 opposition enable us to separate the solar phase and orbital phase contributions to the observed light variations of Iapetus, Titan, Rhea, Dione and Tethys. Titan shows no orbital variations, but has phase coefficients which range from negligible values in the infrared to 0.014 mag/deg in the ultraviolet. Rhea has a bright leading side, a light curve amplitude of about 0.2 mag, and surprisingly large phase coefficients. Combined with other available information, the observations suggest a very porous, texturally complex surface layer. Dione has a leading side which is a few tenths of a magnitude brighter than the trailing side, but the light curve amplitude has little wavelength dependence and the phase coefficients are significantly smaller than those of Rhea, suggesting a less intricate surface texture. The leading side of Tethys is probably a few tenths of a magnitude brighter than the trailing side. Our Iapetus observations generally supplement the earlier work by Millis.

Are BL Lac-type objects nearby black holes

It is pointed out that isolated black holes accreting interstellar gas can account for the characteristic properties of the Lacertids. Emission spectra for various interstellar gas densities and black hole masses are compared with the data plotted by Strittmatter et al. (1972) for the BL Lac-type objects. Rough estimates indicate that there may indeed be a finite number of stellar-mass black holes close to the earth as required by the theory. If it is determined that the BL Lac-type objects lie outside of the galactic disk a black hole accretion model may still apply if certain conditions are satisfied.

The occultation of beta Scorpii by Jupiter. II - The hydrogen-helium abundance in the Jovian atmosphere

The helium abundance in the Jovian atmosphere has been determined by a new method from our observations of the occultation of beta Scorpii by Jupiter. The occultation light curves, consisting of simultaneous records at three wavelengths with a time resolution of 0.01 sec, are dominated by sharp, well-defined intensity peaks or spikes. Because of the wavelength-dependence of the refractivity of the Jovian atmosphere, the arrival time of a given spike at the Earth is also wavelength dependent. A new method for determining the composition of a hydrogen-helium atmosphere from such data is presented, and the principal sources of error are discussed and evaluated.
