Acoustically controlled integrated laser for communications systems

Acoustic wave creates fringes by producing periodic stresses in substrate and in film. Laser carrier frequency is then changed by simply changing acoustical frequency. When two acoustical sources are applied off beam axis, beam can be scanned at very rapid rates.

Transversely bounded DFB lasers

Bounded distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers are studied in detail. Threshold gain and field distribution for a number of configurations are derived and analyzed. More specifically, the thin-film guide, fiber, diffusion guide, and hollow channel with inhomogeneous-cladding DFB lasers are considered. Optimum points exist and must be used in DFB laser design. Different-modes feedback and the effects of the transverse boundaries are included. A number of applications are also discussed.

Proposed distributed feedback crystal cavities for X-ray lasers

The use of zeolite crystals in distributed feedback crystal cavities for X-ray emissions is proposed. The zeolite crystals can guide the emitted X rays and can also generate the feedback necessary for self-sustained oscillation. A table lists the parameters of some typical zeolite crystals.

Magnetic wave propagation in a periodic medium

The propagation of magnetic waves in an infinite medium with a periodic electric constant is studied as a simplified example to evaluate the applications of periodic structures. Specifically, the use of those structures for filtering and distributed feedback is investigated, and a new scheme for the generation of magnetic waves using drifting charges and a distributed feedback configuration similar to DFB lasers is studied in some detail.

Imaging radar potentials for earth resources

The potentials of airborne and spacecraft borne imaging radars in earth resources applications are reviewed and discussed. The areas specifically addressed are: oceanography, coastal regions studies, glaciology, polar ice studies, geology, geomorphology and agriculture. The paper also addresses the main areas of emphasis for the next ten years.

Distributed feedback acoustic surface wave oscillator

Using a simple model, the feasibility of applying the distributed feedback concept to the generation of acoustic surface waves is evaluated. It is shown that surface corrugation of the piezoelectric boundary in a semiconductor-piezoelectric surface acoustic wave amplifier could lead to self-sustained oscillations.

Mode conversion in periodically disturbed thin-film waveguides

Mode conversion in a periodically perturbed thin-film optical waveguide is studied in detail. Three different types of perturbations are considered: periodic index of refraction of the film, periodic index of refraction of the substrate, and periodic boundary. The applications in filters, mode converters, and distributed feedback lasers are discussed.

Diffused optical waveguides

Diffused optical waveguides are studied using the modal and the ray tracing approach, with an emphasis on the case of a hollow waveguide with diffuse cladding. The properties of the guided modes are investigated in detail. The applications of these structures to optical circuits, integrated optics lasers and capillary gas lasers are discussed.

Parametric interactions between Alfven waves and sonic waves

Parametric interactions between a sonic pump wave and a weak Alfven wave are studied. It is shown that if the Alfven-wave velocity Va is small relative to the sonic-wave velocity Vs there is a time-growing instability leading to the increase of the Alfven wave at the expense of the sonic wave. This phenomenon can be of importance in solar and stellar physics. For Va large relative to Vs, the interaction is of the stop-band type.

Frequency selective coupler for integrated optics systems.

A frequency selective coupler which consists of two thin film waveguides imbedded in a periodic medium is studied using the Brillouin diagram. Detailed results for the relative bandwidth and the coupling factor are plotted as a function of normalized frequency for a representative case.

Cerenkov and transition radiation in space-time periodic media.

The solution to the problem of determining the radiation emitted by a uniformly moving charged particle in a sinusoidally space-time periodic medium is obtained. The space-time periodicity can be considered as due to a strong pump wave and is expressed as a traveling-wave-type change in the dielectric constant or the plasma density. The solution covers also the limiting case of sinusoidally stratified media. The expression and spectrum of the radiated electromagnetic field are determined for different media: dielectric, isotropic and uniaxial plasma. Depending on the nature of the medium and the velocity of the particle, the radiated field is of the Cerenkov and/or transition type. The Brillouin diagram is used extensively in understanding and determining the nature, extent, and spectrum of the different modes of radiation, and a focusing effect is also studied.

Electromagnetic wave propagation and wave-vector diagram in space-time periodic media.

Analysis of TE and TM wave propagation in space-time periodic media such as dielectrics, isotropic plasmas and uniaxial plasmas. A numerical solution is obtained for media with sinusoidal periodicity. Wave-vector diagrams are plotted to facilitate studies of dipole radiation, wave propagation in waveguides and wave interactions with a half-space.

Dipole antenna in space - Time periodic media.

Study and solution of the problem of dipole radiation in sinusoidally space-time periodic media. The space-time periodicity can be considered as due to a strong pump wave and is expressed as a traveling-wave type change in the dielectric constant or the plasma density. The solution also covers the limit case of a sinusoidally stratified medium. The solution is formulated in a matrix form such that the basic results and diagrams apply, with minor changes, to the different cases studied: electric and magnetic dipole in a dielectric, plasma, and uniaxial plasma. The wave-vector diagram is used extensively in studying and presenting the different properties of the solution: caustics, effect of the disturbance (pump wave) motion, harmonics, radiation outside the allowed cone in a uniaxial plasma. Many dipole radiation patterns are given, and their features are explained physically. Finally, the solution and results obtained are extended to certain generally space-time periodic media.
