Supercomputer networking for space science applications

The initial design of a supercomputer network topology including the design of the communications nodes along with the communications interface hardware and software is covered. Several space science applications that are proposed experiments by GSFC and JPL for a supercomputer network using the NASA ACTS satellite are also reported.

NASA's activities in remote sensing

NASA spaceborne terrestrial remote-sensing projects of the 1960-1983 period are briefly surveyed, and future plans are outlined. The increased coverage of spectral bands and improving resolution provided by such satellites as Tiros, Seasat, and the ERTS/Landsat series are indicated; the Shuttle imaging radar, SAR, and multispectral IR radiometer are characterized; and the planned Upper-Atmospheric Research Satellite and ocean-topography experiment (Topex) are considered. Drawings and photographs of the spacecraft and sample images are included.

Communications satellites - The experimental years

Only eight years after the launc of Sputnik-1 by the Soviet Union, the first commercial satellite, 'Early Bird', entered service. In just twelve years commercial satellite service extended around the earth and became profitable. The reasons for the successful development of the communications satellite services in a comparatively short time are considered. These reasons are related to the presence of three ingredients, taking into account technology to create the system, communications requirements to form a market, and a management structure to implement the system. The formation of the concept of using earth orbiting satellites for telecommunications is discussed. It is pointed out that the years from 1958 to 1964 were the true 'experimental years' for satellite communications. The rapid development of technology during this crucial period is described, giving attention to passive satellites, active systems, and development satellites.

Nimbus-7 (-G) post launch report: Mission success

Nimbus-7, the last of the Nimbus series satellites, was launched from the Space and Missile Test Center at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California on October 24, 1978. The purpose of the mission was to collect global data of the Earth's atmosphere, oceans and polar ice with a payload of eight interdisciplinary research experiments. These experiments represent both domestic and international, scientific and governmental communities.
