Initial PIP-II Beam Current Monitor Fault Case Analyses & Beam Position Monitor Linearity Studies in CST Studio Suite

The use of non-invasive sensors & systems to measure particle beam characteristics is a crucial part of modern accelerator control systems due to their ability to return real time beam data while minimizing negative effects on beam quality. To ensure that one can be reasonably confident these sensors will behave as desired upon be-ing implemented within the beamline, simulations pre-dicting the performance of these sensors under beamline conditions can be used as a valuable tool for checking sensor functionality without a physical test bench. This paper details the design, testing, and results of two sensor models developed using CST Studio Suite soft-ware designed to mimic two sensors to be implemented within the PIP-III beamline: an elliptical, large-aperture beam position monitor (BPM) for which vertical & hori-zontal position signal linearity was analyzed, and an AC current transformer (ACCT) beam current monitor (BCM) used to search for potential fault cases within the BCM and beam pipe flange gaps. Special focus is given to the discovery of linearity variations within the BPM and the use of frequency domain techniques in the BCM fault case analyses.

Overview of the New Beam Physics Research at the IOTA/FAST Facility

The Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology (FAST) facility is dedicated to the exploration of novel concepts in accelerator and beam physics, and the development of a robust workforce, in order to enable and enhance next-generation particle accelerators. FAST comprises a high-brightness superconducting electron linac, and a storage ring, the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA). Experiments in the most recent operational run include studies of nonlinear integrable lattices; tracking of single electrons; precise characterization of undulator radiation; studies with low-momentum-compaction lattices; and ultra-wide range beam diagnostics based on Photomultiplier tubes. In the linac, experiments on noise in intense electron bunches were conducted. The IOTA proton injector, currently being commissioned, will enable a diverse program on space-charge-dominated beams. Research areas include non-invasive beam profile monitoring for proton beams; beam dynamics with electron lenses; halo suppression, feedback systems, and electron cooling. In this presentation, we provide an overview of the recent results and highlight future plans together with opportunities for collaboration.

NIOLD Run 4 Report

In this report we discuss the motivation, methods, and analysis of the IOTA Run 4 studies of the Nonlinear Integrable Optics, Landau Damping (NIOLD) experiment. We introduce Landau Damping, an effect that damps collective instabilities in particle accelerators. We also introduce and discuss a new method to measure stability diagrams which quantify the strength of Landau Damping, that employs an antidamper. We also present the data collection process, the data analysis procedure, and the preliminary results. The first results qualitatively agree with the analytical predictions and the simulations. Next steps for the current data and goals for future data are also discussed.
