2D Dilaton Gravity and the Weil–Petersson Volumes with Conical Defects

We derive the Weil-Petersson measure on the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces with defects of arbitrary opening angles and use this to compute its volume. We conjecture a matrix integral computing the corresponding volumes and confirm agreement in simple cases. Here, we combine this mathematical result with the equivariant localization approach to Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity to justify a proposed exact solution of pure 2d dilaton gravity for a large class of dilaton potentials.

Off-shell Partition Functions in 3d Gravity

We explore three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant via canonical quantization. We focus on chiral gravity which is related to a single copy of PSL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory and is simpler to treat in canonical quantization. Its phase space for an initial value surface Σ is given by the appropriate moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We use geometric quantization to compute partition functions of chiral gravity on three-manifolds of the form Σ×S 1 , where Σ can have asymptotic boundaries. Most of these topologies do not admit a classical solution and are thus not amenable to a direct semiclassical path integral computation. We use an index theorem that expresses the partition function as an integral of characteristic classes over phase space. In the presence of n asymptotic boundaries, we use techniques from equivariant cohomology to localize the integral to a finite-dimensional integral over $\overline{M}$ g,n , which we evaluate in low genus cases. Higher genus partition functions quickly become complicated since they depend in an oscillatory way on Newton's constant. There is a precise sense in which one can isolate the non-oscillatory part which we call the fake partition function. We establish that there is a topological recursion that computes the fake partition functions for arbitrary Riemann surfaces Σ. As a result, there is a scaling limit in which the model reduces to JT gravity and our methods give a novel way to compute JT partition functions via equivariant localization.

Holographic Weyl anomaly in string theory

We compute the worldsheet sphere partition function of string theory on global AdS 3 with pure NS-NS flux. Because of an unfixed Möbius symmetry on the worldsheet, there is a cancellation of infinities and only a part of the answer is unambiguous. We show that it precisely reproduces the holographic Weyl anomaly and the ambiguous terms correspond to the possible counterterms of the boundary CFT.

Solving 3d gravity with Virasoro TQFT

We propose a precise reformulation of 3d quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of a topological quantum field theory based on the quantization of the Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces that we refer to as “Virasoro TQFT”. This TQFT is similar, but importantly not equivalent, to SL(2, \mathbb{R} ℝ ) Chern-Simons theory. This sharpens the folklore that 3d gravity is related to SL(2, \mathbb{R} ℝ ) Chern-Simons theory into a precise correspondence, and resolves some well-known issues with this lore at the quantum level. Our proposal is computationally very useful and provides a powerful tool for the further study of 3d gravity. In particular, we explain how together with standard TQFT surgery techniques this leads to a fully algorithmic procedure for the computation of the gravity partition function on a fixed topology exactly in the central charge. Mathematically, the relation leads to many nontrivial conjectures for hyperbolic 3-manifolds, Virasoro conformal blocks and crossing kernels.

Evaluating one-loop string amplitudes

We evaluate one-loop open-string amplitudes at finite \alpha' α ′ for the first time. Our method involves a deformation of the integration contour over the modular parameter \tau τ to a fractal contour introduced by Rademacher in the context of analytic number theory. This procedure leads to explicit and practical formulas for the one-loop four-point amplitudes in type-I superstring theory, amenable to numerical evaluation. We plot the amplitudes as a function of the Mandelstam invariants s s and t t and directly verify long-standing conjectures about their behaviour at high energies.
