Variable temperature pressure broadening of the 4(1,4)-3(2,1) transition of H2O by O2 and N2

The O2 and N2 pressure-broadening parameters of the 4(1,4)-3(2,1) rotational transition in the ground vibrational state of H2O have been measured in the temperature range between 100 and 520 K. Above 250 K the measurements were made in an equilibrium cell. Below 250 K a cell, which uses collisional cooling to circumvent the temperature limits imposed by the vapor pressure of the sample gas, was used. The data were fitted to an exponential temperature-dependence for data above 150 K with resultant n values of 0.81(3) for O2 and 0.70(3) for N2, where the entries in parentheses represent the error in the last significant figure of the parameter. Below 150 K the measured pressure-broadening parameters are smaller than those calculated using these values of n.

Complex dielectric constants for selected near-millimeter-wave materials at 245 GHz

A double-beam instrument developed in this laboratory has been used to measure the complex dielectric constant of selected materials at 245 GHz. It is reported here the results for crystalline quartz, fused silica (Spectrosil WF and Dynasil 4000), beryllia (iso-pressed), boron nitride (hot-pressed), and a nickel ferrite (Trans-Tech 2-111). Results are compared with the data obtained by other researchers.

Two-beam interferometer for optical constants measurements at near-millimeter wavelengths

A simple and versatile instrument for the measurement of optical constants in the near millimeter spectral region is described. Studies of quasi-optical components used in this instrument for effective beam transmission and control are reported. These studies include transmission characteristics of dielectric waveguides and performance of a variable coupler based on frustrated total internal reflection. Operation of this instrument as a two-beam interferometer for determining the index of refraction or as a device to measure transmission for determining the absorption coefficient are described. Values measured with this instrument at 245 GHz, using an optically pumped molecular laser as the source, are reported for several low-loss materials. Appropriate corrections and error estimates are discussed. The potential for improvement and increased accuracies are discussed.

Optically pumped submillimeter-waves and applications

Rapid development of optically pumped lasers has shown the potential to be used as a source for a high resolution spectrometer. In this connection, a compact, stable FIR laser was designed, fabricated, and assembled, integrating both the pump laser and the FIR cavity in the same mechanical structure for its improved (both thermal and mechanical) stability and mobility. Performance of the mixer structure which was designed and constructed for the evaluation of the Schottky diodes was found to be satisfactory. The feasibility of generating tunable sideband for molecular spectroscopy studies was demonstrated.
