Studsvik R2 materials test reactor Ad Hoc depletion strategy for the derivation of the fuel isotopic composition of the MPCMIV benchmark

The Ad Hoc Depletion Strategy elaborated by the NINE company, developed in support of the organization of the MPCMIV (Multi-physics Pellet Cladding Mechanical Interaction Validation) benchmark input and output specifications, is presented. This work aims at illustrating the strategy itself and then showing the results obtained with its application over the Studsvik R2 Testing Reactor, which is analyzed in the benchmark. The objective of the application of the strategy is to compute the fuel elements isotopic compositions at the beginning of some core loadings of interest for the benchmark. To this objective, it is necessary to implement first the simulation model of the three single assembly types and perform the infinite lattice depletions, then, to build the full core model and to perform the simulation of the core cycle. All the models and simulations were carried out with the use of the Monte Carlo particle transport code Serpent 2. Finally, the simulations results are assessed against Studsvik isotopic compositions of the fuel elements discharged from the R2 Reactor at the end of the core loading. Several assumptions were necessary during all the steps of the strategy, to overcome the lack of information regarding the core management. For this reason, the solution found at the end of the current analysis may not be completely optimized and further improvements regarding the model assumptions will be tested in a future work. A revisitation of the ENEA TAPIRO Fast Source Reactor neutronic capabilities

This work is devoted to the analysis of the neutronic characterization of the ENEA-Casaccia center RSV TAPIRO fast neutrons source reactor performed during the 80's in the frame of a joint ENEA-SCK-CEN Mol collaboration. The Belgian scientist Albert Fabry, who was available to investigate a fast research reactor to perform a full characterization of the system neutron flux, led the TAPIRO experimental campaign. In particular, the paper is focused on the comparison between some 'recommended' Fabry experimental reaction rates traverses and nowadays MCNP Monte Carlo and ERANOS deterministic calculation results. It appears that the quality of the results depends on the penetration depth into the copper reflector. The influence of copper nuclear data are more evident in the ERANOS results. Massimo Salvatores has provided a great contribution to the interpretation of the TAPIRO neutronics: this humble work is dedicated to him.

Genetic algorithm-based optimisation of the few-group structure for lead fast reactors analysis

The optimal choice of the few-group structure for full-core transient analyses is still an open issue in reactor physics, especially for fast system like the lead fast reactor. One possible approach to select the group boundaries is represented by heuristic search algorithms, such as evolutionary ones. In this paper, a genetic algorithm coupled with the SIMMER code is employed to determine optimized six-group boundaries for the analysis of the ALFRED reactor. The Serpent Monte Carlo code is adopted to produce both the fine-group cross section library and the fine-group flux, used as a figure of merit to drive the genetic optimisation. The results show that the algorithm is indeed able to find satisfactory solutions that comply with the set objectives and can be reasonably interpreted in light of the underlying physics of the considered core. Formulation of the density eigenvalue problem in neutron transport for relevant engineering applications

A new formulation of the density eigenvalue problem for the neutron transport equation is presented. This new eigenvalue, named ζ eigenvalue can be introduced freely in the transport model, acting on a selected portion of the phase space. Despite its broader applications and its connection with the nature of the transport operator, the ζ eigenvalue has been presented here mainly as a design-oriented technique for the efficient evaluation of the critical concentration for a specific nuclide (or mixture of nuclides). This new eigenvalue is particularly adequate to study the definition of the material composition in the criticality design process of a multiplying system. The method is then applied for the study of classical problems such as the critical moderation ratio and the poison concentration to control the reactor. Some results are presented in one dimensional configuration using the multi- group spherical harmonics approach. This eigenvalue formulation proves to be a convenient and useful way to attain criticality, also for complex, realistic systems.
