Native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

Using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, in this study we visualized the native defects in antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 . Two native defects, Mn Bi and Bi Te antisites, can be well resolved in the topographic images. Mn Bi tend to suppress the density of states at the conduction band edge. Spectroscopy imaging reveals a localized peaklike local density of state at ~ 80 meV below the Fermi energy. A careful inspection of topographic and spectroscopic images, combined with density functional theory calculation, suggests this results from Bi Mn antisites at Mn sites. The random distribution of Mn Bi and Bi Mn antisites results in spatial fluctuation of local density of states near the Fermi level in MnBi 2 Te 4 .

Crystal growth and scintillation properties of pure and Tl-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5

Here, the Bridgman crystal growth and scintillation properties of both undoped and Tl-doped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 are presented. This material is very attractive for gamma and X-ray detection applications, with a density of 4.53 g/cm 3 and effective atomic number of 51.9. Undoped Cs 3 Cu 2 I 5 had a light yield of 41,500 photons/MeV, with an energy resolution of 4.4% at 662 keV. Thallium doping at 0.5 mol % resulted in a much-improved scintillation response, in which light yield increased to 98,200 photons/MeV and energy resolution reduced to 3.3% at 662 keV. The X-ray excited emission is centered at 442 nm for the undoped and 500 nm for the Tl-doped crystals. The undoped emission is broad, typical of excitonic emission, while thallium doping results in an even broader band with features of both the undoped and thallium defect-mediated emissions.

TlSr 2 I 5 :Eu 2+ - A new high density scintillator for gamma-ray detection

In this paper we report on the scintillation properties of TlSr 2 I 5 doped with Eu 2+ , a novel thallium-containing high-resolution scintillator for gamma-ray spectroscopy. Here, small diameter, good quality crystals of TlSr 2 I 5 :Eu (TSI) with different Eu 2+ concentrations were grown by the vertical Bridgman method. X-ray diffraction measurements show that single crystals of TSI belong to the monoclinic system with space group P2 1 /c. TlSr 2 I 5 has a density of 5.32 g/cm 3 and effective Z of 60. The X-ray excited emission of Eu 2+ doped TlSr 2 I 5 features a broad emission band peaking between 460–470 nm. The light yield of TlSr 2 I 5 crystal doped with 1% Eu 2+ is measured to be ~72,000 ph/MeV with an energy resolution of 2.8% at 662 keV. The scintillation decay time which is characteristic of Eu 2+ shows two components, with 90% of the light in a ~500 ns component and the rest in a longer component of ~3 μs.

Adsorption-controlled growth of MnTe(Bi2Te3)n by molecular beam epitaxy exhibiting stoichiometry-controlled magnetism

We report the growth of the intrinsic magnetic topological system MnTe ( Bi 2 Te 3 ) n by molecular beam epitaxy. By mapping the temperature and the Bi:Mn flux ratio, it is shown that there is a narrow growth window for the n = 1 phase Mn Bi 2 Te 4 with 2.0 < Bi : Mn < 2.6 at 225°C. In this work, the films are stoichiometric and excess Bi and Te is not incorporated. At higher flux ratios (Bi:Mn≥4.5) it is found that the n = 2 Mn Bi 4 Te 7 phase is stabilized. Transport measurements indicate that the Mn Bi 2 Te 4 and Mn Bi 4 Te 7 undergo magnetic transitions around 25 and 10 K, respectively, consistent with antiferromagnetic phases found in the bulk. Further, for Mn-rich conditions (Bi:Mn<2), ferromagnetism emerges that exhibits a clear hysteretic state in the Hall effect, which likely indicates Mn-doped Mn Bi 2 Te 4 . Understanding how to grow ternary chalcogenide phases is the key to synthesizing new materials and to interface magnetism and topology, which together are routes to realize and control exotic quantum phenomena.

Deciphering the effect of traps on electronic charge transport properties of methylammonium lead tribromide perovskite

Halide perovskites have undergone remarkable developments as highly efficient optoelectronic materials for a variety of applications. Several studies indicated the critical role of defects on the performance of perovskite devices. However, the parameters of defects and their interplay with free charge carriers remain unclear. In this study, we explored the dynamics of free holes in methylammonium lead tribromide (MAPbBr 3 ) single crystals using the time-of-flight (ToF) current spectroscopy. By combining ToF spectroscopy and Monte Carlo simulation, three energy states were detected in the bandgap of MAPbBr 3 . In addition, we found the trapping and detrapping rates of free holes ranging from a few microseconds to hundreds of microseconds. Contrary to previous studies, we revealed a strong detrapping activity of traps. We showed that these traps substantially affect the transport properties of MAPbBr 3 , including mobility and mobility-lifetime product. Our results provide an insight on charge transport properties of perovskite semiconductors.

Flat bands in the CoSn-type compounds

Quantum interference on the kagome lattice generates electronic bands with narrow bandwidth, called flat bands. Crystal structures incorporating this lattice can host strong electron correlations with nonstandard ingredients, but only if these bands lie at the Fermi level. In the six compounds with the CoSn structure type (FeGe, FeSn, CoSn, NiIn, RhPb, and PtTl) the transition metals form a kagome lattice. The two iron variants are robust antiferromagnets so we focus on the latter four and investigate their thermodynamic and transport properties. We consider these results and calculated band structures to locate and characterize the flat bands in these materials. Finally, we propose that CoSn and RhPb deserve the community's attention for exploring flat-band physics.

Tuning magnetic order in the van der Waals metal $Fe_5GeTe_2$ by cobalt substitution

Fe 5 - x GeTe 2 is a van der Waals material with one of the highest reported bulk Curie temperatures, T C ≈ 310 K . Here, theoretical calculations and experiments are utilized to demonstrate that the magnetic ground state is highly sensitive to local atomic arrangements and the interlayer stacking. Cobalt substitution is found to be an effective way to manipulate the magnetic properties while also increasing the ordering temperature. In particular, cobalt substitution up to ≈ 30 % enhances T C and changes the magnetic anisotropy, while ≈ 50 % cobalt substitution yields an antiferromagnetic state. Single crystal x-ray diffraction evidences a structural change upon increasing the cobalt concentration, with a rhombohedral cell observed in the parent material and a primitive cell observed for ≈ 46 % cobalt content relative to iron. First-principles calculations demonstrate that it is a combination of high cobalt content and the concomitant change to primitive layer stacking that produces antiferromagnetic order. These results illustrate the sensitivity of magnetism in Fe 5 - x GeTe 2 to composition and structure, and emphasize the important role of local structural order-disorder and layer stacking in cleavable magnetic materials.

Role of Lithium Codoping in Enhancing the Scintillation Yield of Aluminate Garnets

The aim of this work is to clarify the scintillation-yield enhancement in Lu YAG : Pr scintillators obtained by Li codoping via integrated study of the valence state of activators, the preferential site occupancy of Li codopants, and defect structures from experimental and theoretical insights. Here, with Li codoping, the light yield and energy resolution of 10 × 10 × 10 mm 3 Lu YAG : Pr samples are improved from 156000 to 248000 photons/MeV, and 5.3 to 4.3% at 662 keV,respectively. The optical absorption spectra indicate that Li codoping does not induce conversion of stable Pr 3 + to Pr 4 + in Lu YAG : Pr single crystals. Based on the formation energies of substitutional and interstitial Li sites using density-functional-theory (DFT) calculations and the 7 Li nuclear magnetic resonance results, it is shown that the Li ions prefer to dominantly occupy the fourfold coordinated interstitial sites and fourfold coordinated Al sites. The systematic analysis of thermoluminescence glow curves, positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopies, and defect formation energies derived from DFT calculations reveals that the concentration of isolated Lu and Al vacancies as dominant acceptor defects is reduced by Li codoping, whilst the shallow Li i interstitial defects and the deep V O oxygen vacancies are introduced simultaneously. We propose that the lowering of hole trapping at defects resulting from Li codoping contributes to the scintillation-yield enhancement.

K 2 CuX 3 (X = Cl, Br): All-Inorganic Lead-Free Blue Emitters with Near-Unity Photoluminescence Quantum Yield

Recently, copper(I) halides have been gaining increased attention as highly luminescent nontoxic alternatives to lead halide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. In this paper, we report preparation of blue emitting, lead free, all-inorganic halides K 2 CuX 3 (X = Cl, Br) through five synthetic methods including traditional solid-state and solution methods. The photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra of K 2 CuCl 3 and K 2 CuBr 3 exhibit narrow peaks centered at 392 and 388 nm with full widths at half-maximum (fwhm) values of ~54 nm. The visible bright blue emission is corroborated by the remarkably high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) values up to ~97%. Furthermore, radioluminescence measurements on K 2 CuCl 3 yield a bright peak at 404 nm under irradiation with X-rays at 200 kVp and 20 mA, which is optimal for use with PMTs and Si photomultipliers, suggesting a strong potential of this family for radiation detection applications. Based on our combined experimental and computational investigations, the origin of the efficient luminescence in K 2 CuX 3 is attributed to the high stability self-trapped excitons (STE) formed in the one-dimensional anionic ∞ 1 [CuX 3 ] 2– chains. Advantageously, K 2 CuX 3 demonstrate improved air- and photostability compared to the previously reported copper(I) halides. The discovery of highly efficient and high stability light emitters based on earth-abundant copper(I) halides paves the way for their potential practical applications.

Density functional studies of defects and defect-related luminescence in M g 3 N 2

M g 3 N 2 is a promising material for light-emitting-diode applications. However, the microscopic origin of the broad yellow photoluminescence in M g 3 N 2 remains unknown. In this study, defect properties and defect-related optical transitions are investigated based on the hybrid functional calculation. Our results show that the nitrogen vacancy introduces multiple localized defect states within the band gap, which play a dominant role in luminescent properties of M g 3 N 2 . Common impurities like hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon and their complexes with native defects are also studied. Compared with isolated V Mg , V Mg -H and V Mg – O N complexes have shallower transition levels. Our calculated optical excitation and emission peaks associated with isolated V N are in good agreement with those observed in experiments. In addition, the impurity C N is also a potential source for the observed yellow emission in M g 3 N 2 .

Robust Ferromagnetism in Highly Strained SrCoO 3 Thin Films

Epitaxial strain provides important pathways to control the magnetic and electronic states in transition-metal oxides. However, the large strain is usually accompanied by a strong reduction of the oxygen-vacancy formation energy, which hinders the direct manipulation of their intrinsic properties. Here, using a postdeposition ozone annealing method, we obtain a series of oxygen stoichiometric SrCoO 3 thin films with the tensile strain up to 3.0%. We observe a robust ferromagnetic ground state in all strained thin films, while interestingly the tensile strain triggers a distinct metal-to-insulator transition along with the increase of the tensile strain. The persistent ferromagnetic state across the electrical transition therefore suggests that the magnetic state is directly correlated with the localized electrons, rather than the itinerant ones, which then calls for further investigation of the intrinsic mechanism of this magnetic compound beyond the double-exchange mechanism.

0D and 2D: The Cases of Phenylethylammonium Tin Bromide Hybrids

Tin halide perovskites and perovskite-related materials have emerged as promising lead-free hybrid materials for various optoelectronic applications. While remarkable progress has been achieved in the development of organic tin halide hybrids with diverse structures and controlled dimensionalities at the molecular level, some controversial results that have been reported recently need to be addressed. For instance, different photophysical properties have been reported for two-dimensional (2D) (PEA) 2 SnBr 4 (PEA = phenylethylammonium) by several groups with distinct emission peaks at around 468 and 550 nm. Here we report our efforts in the synthesis of phenylethylammonium tin bromide hybrids with zero-dimensional (0D) and 2D structures, and characterizations of their structural and photophysical properties. 0D [(PEA) 4 SnBr 6 ][(PEA)Br] 2 [CCl 2 H 2 ] 2 was found to exhibit strong yellow emission peak at 566 nm with a photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) of ~90%, while 2D (PEA) 2 SnBr 4 had weak emission peak at 470 nm with a PLQE of <0.1%. Interestingly, 0D [(PEA) 4 SnBr 6 ][(PEA)Br] 2 [CCl 2 H 2 ] 2 can be converted into 2D (PEA) 2 SnBr 4 upon drying, which would return to 0D [(PEA) 4 SnBr 6 ][(PEA)Br] 2 [CCl 2 H 2 ] 2 upon addition of dichloromethane. Powder X-ray diffraction results confirmed the reversible transformation between 0D and 2D structures. Density functional theory calculations showed that excitons in 0D [(PEA) 4 SnBr 6 ][(PEA)Br] 2 [CCl 2 H 2 ] 2 are highly localized, resulting in a strongly Stokes shifted broadband emission, while delocalized electronic states in 2D (PEA) 2 SnBr 4 result in weaker exciton binding, a higher exciton mobility, and a higher nonradiative decay.

Thallium-based scintillators for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy: Ce 3+ - doped Tl 2 LaCl 5 and Tl 2 LaBr 5

In this paper we report on the crystallographic and scintillation properties of Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and Tl 2 LaBr 5 :Ce 3 + , two novel thallium-containing high-resolution scintillators for gamma-ray spectroscopy. Crystals of Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and Tl 2 LaBr 5 :Ce 3 + were grown by the Vertical Bridgman method up to 1-inch diameter and 1-inch long. Single crystals of Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and Tl 2 LaBr 5 :Ce 3 + belong to the orthorhombic system with space group 62 and have a density of 5.16 and 5.98 g/cm 3 , respectively. The scintillators show high light yields of up to 68,000 photons/MeV, excellent gamma-ray energy resolution of ≤ 3% at 662 keV, a fast scintillation decay, and a proportional response over a wide range of energies from 32 keV up to 1275 keV. Density Functional Theory calculations show that the Ce 3 + energy levels are inside the bandgap despite the smaller bandgap of Tl 2 LaCl 5 and Tl 2 LaBr 5 compared to K 2 LaCl 5 and K 2 LaBr 5 . Finally, a systematic Ce 3 + concentration study was performed for Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and trends observed.

Additive-assisted synthesis and optoelectronic properties of (CH 3 NH 3 ) 4 Bi 6 I 22

Hybrid organic-inorganic halides containing Bi and Sb generally exhibit higher stability and lower toxicity compared to Pb analogues. Here, in this work, synthesis, crystal and electronic structures and optical properties of a brand-new methylammonium bismuth iodide, (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 (MA + = CH 3 NH 3 + ), are reported. Interestingly, we find that the presence of the HgI2 is necessary for the targeted preparation of (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 . (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 contains isolated [Bi 6 I 22 ] 4- clusters made of six edge-sharing octahedral BiI6 units, which are separated by MA + cations in its 0D crystal structure. A relatively low optical band gap of 1.9 eV was estimated for (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 based on diffuse reflectance measurements. An intense photoluminescence peak emerges at 636 nm at low temperatures that supports the assigned band gap value. Electronic structure calculations show the presence of flat bands in the valence and conduction bands, consistent with the low-dimensional structure of (MA) 4 Bi 6 I 22 , and slightly indirect nature of the bandgap. Our findings suggest that the use of facilitator moieties such as HgI 2 may provide a pathway to obtaining alternative methylammonium bismuth iodides to (MA) 3 Bi 2 I 9 .
